A Clear Vision
The first half of 2009 has been particularly busy
for the airport and business aviation centre. Total
Airport movements are up 518 to 19,275 (3%)
for the first half of 2009 against the same period
last year, and visiting general aviation
movements are also very encouraging - up 707
to 2045 (53%). Horse flights have more than
doubled and charter flights are up 25% versus
last year. Executive jet movements jumped
about 5% over the first quarter of 2009 following
the official opening of the new Marshall
Business Aviation Centre despite the severe
weather in February, and we continue to deal
positively with current market challenges.
In terms of news and events, here are some of
the highlights over the past six months…..
June 9th….
Tuesday June 9th was an important date for the
airport for two reasons – firstly it was the 80th
anniversary of the opening the airfield on its
current site, and it was also the date chosen for
the fifth biennial Business & General Aviation
Day – BGAD 09 - to be held here and on this
occasion it also coincided with the Marshall
Group Annual General Meeting. Working once
again with EBAN magazine, the BGAD
exhibition was held in Hangar 1 with
participation from over 35 companies, and 12
aircraft on static display together with vehicles
from the Motor Group, and the Porsche Club of
Great Britain. In Hangar 22 the British Business
& General Aviation Association gave a seminar
on “Making the Case for Business Aviation”
which was attended by over 80 people. The
event was attended by over 600 people and
also gave Marshall Business Aviation the
opportunity to showcase its new state-of-theart
facilities to the industry.
Introducing Ambeo!
Newly-formed jet-charter company Ambeo
PLC has selected Cambridge as their base as
they look to grow their business; they are now
officially headquartered at the Marshall Business
Aviation Centre which they plan to use as their
operational base for their forthcoming fleet of
Cessna Citation Mustang aircraft. Ambeo intend
to provide ad hoc charter services on Cessna
Citation Mustangs - operating up to five aircraft
under their own air operator’s certificate within
the first 12 months, with the view to expanding
the fleet across Europe and operating up to 30
aircraft within five years. Just as the Marshall
Business Aviation Centre is starting out, we
would like to wish Ambeo all the best as they
launch their business too!
Airport Services for the Industry
Another part of the airport is Marshall Aviation
Services which is dedicated to the provision of
management, technical and support services
for the aviation and airport industry. The Aircraft
Support IPT at RAF Wyton has contracted
Marshall to supply Portable Airfield Clearance
Systems (PACS) to control Foreign Object
Debris on airfields in the UK and operational
environments for the next 5 years.
Foreign Object Debris refers to all the loose
pieces of debris which can be found on airfield
ramps and taxiways, including nuts, bolts, rocks
and stones. Marshall is the official UK
distributors for the FOD Boss - a sweeper
designed for collecting this debris, and also
provides the equipment for many civil airports
including Coventry, Biggin Hill, Bristol, Oxford,
and Stornoway.
Under the same Aviation Services banner, at the
end of April, Marshall Airport officially took over
the provision of Air Traffic Services at Coventry
Airport in an exciting contract which will see
Think time.
Marshall manage all air traffic control, air traffic
engineering and aeronautical ground lighting at
the Midlands airport. The contract will cover the
provision of air traffic management at Coventry
for five years, which will secure many jobs at the
airport whilst creating 34 new positions under
Marshall. In recent years the company has also
worked with many other UK airports including
Blackpool, Inverness and Norwich.
Industry Recognition
Marshall Airport Cambridge is proud to have
been awarded the United Kingdom’s Best
Aerodrome Award 2009 for General Aviation
from the Aircraft Owners & Pilots
Association (AOPA). To mark the award,
there will be an official presentation in the
Marshall Business Aviation Centre on the
27th August.
