Ken’s Korner - February 2013
Fellow Nomads,
January just seemed to fly in and bluster out and
before you had a chance to say “white rabbit”.
February's already upon us and almost complete in
the process being a busy month with Boland's 20th
Anniversary nicely inter-spaced between January's Game at
Humewood and February's OMIPSA game at “The Hill”.
Six of us represented Eastern Cape at Boland's Anniversary
celebration. The trip down with VC Stuart at the wheel and
youngsters Pat Phillips and Roy Skinner bickering in the back seat
was something else altogether. Langkloof and a customary stop
at Robbie's Sex Shoppe in the Klein Karoo with the barometer at
40oC was a welcome relieve. We made it in time for the welcome
cocktail party and friendships were renewed over a few cold
“frosties” and pizzas from the Stellbosch GC oven!!
The Anniversary dinner was held under the stars at Hansie van
Niekerk's Knorhoek Wine Estate and proved to be an amazing
success even if the wind did bluster a little. The next day's game at
Stellenbosch proved a challenge for just about everyone and there
were no Eastern Cape mention in the prize-list. I had the honour of
playing against Alten Hulme, Boland Captain, and if I remember
correctly, wound up paying a little for the priviledge. Great
hospitality and a great time had by all.
February's monthly game at Port Elizabeth Golf Club included our
annual OMIPSA challenge and I must apologize for the poor
communication of the format for the day. A decision was taken to
simplify the scoring by simply adding the 2 scores together. This
was not well communicated for which I must shoulder the blame.
There was some concern that playing off Nomads handicaps
would adversely affect our qualifiers in the Regional and National
events. Nomads handicaps will have no bearing in future events
as both the Regional and National events use an average of the
qualifier's past 2-year handicaps with a maximum 20% variation
allowed for recent changes.
My thanks to all that entered the OMIPSA competition on the day.
Our 39 pairs earned us two entries and best of luck to Cobus, Peter,
