Fellow Nomads.
February found us competing at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club
for the monthly game as well as the Old Mutual
International Pairs of South Africa competition. Many
thanks to PE Golf Club staff for the friendly welcome to the course and
clubhouse. The damage from the recent flash flood was still evident, pity
the rain has to do damage as well as good when falling to earth. The
weather was quite acceptable to start proceedings but became a bit nasty
as the game progressed. My partner, Dennis Jones, really struggled and was
a hot favourite to take home his own donated prize for the day, the dreaded
Teddy. Fortunately for him, someone else in the field managed to play
worse than he did and saved him the embarrassment. Needless to say, we
lost our private game against the ever steady Andre Heunis and Nico Smit,
but still had an enjoyable day in their company.
Well done to the winners on the day, with Stuart McLeod again coming first
in the A division, ensuring again his qualification for Gold Cup in December.
Well done to the two winning pairs who will represent Eastern Cape Nomads
at the regional final in the OMIPSA competition and we wish you everything
of the best in progressing to the final later in the year – it is a wonderful
experience playing at Zebula with the carrot at the end of the stick being
an overseas trip to represent our country at the world finals.
I enjoyed witnessing the induction of two new Nomads on Sunday, Robert
Falkner and Simon Wilcock, may your stay at Eastern Cape Nomads be a long
and happy one. It was nice to see that Simon's mother, Pat Wilcock, was
present to witness her son being inducted. Simon's father, the late John
Wilcock, was a proud Nomad himself, having started his Nomadic career in
the Border and then moving to Port Elizabeth for a long while before his
passing away a few years ago.
We look forward to seeing you all at Uitenhage Golf Club on 10th March for
our next monthly game. Shortly after this, the team to represent Eastern
Cape Nomads at the National Tournament at Ebotse in Benoni depart with
only one thought in mind, to bring back the Bert Hunt trophy!
Good Golfing
Stuart
