theater & the arts Music and Art Inspired by the Season By Faith Ann Butcher Music and art that expresses the feelings of the holiday season fill Putnam County during the month of December. Take the time enjoy a performance, visit the galleries and find that unique gift for someone special. Putnam Chorale will be performing a free holiday concert at United Methodist Church, 83 Main Street in Brewster on Sat., Dec. 4 at 7:30 pm. The child friendly concert will encourage the audience to sing along and join the Chorale and Brass Quintet in a musical celebration of the season. The Putnam Chorale will also perform their annual “Handel’s Messiah- Community Sing Along” at Gilead Presbyterian Church, 7 Church Street, Carmel on Sat., Dec. 11 starting at 8 pm. A “White Christmas Big Band Concert,” will be performed at Hope in Life Church, 575 Drewville Road in Carmel on Sat., Dec. 4 at 7 pm and Sun. Dec. 5 at 4 pm. A must see this season is the spectacular collection of more than 100 international crèche displays presented by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center, 1350 Route 9 in Garrison during daylight hours from Dec. 5-Jan. 9. Started by the late Father Joseph P. Egan, SA, the collection features hand-made and mass-produced crèches from almost every continent and country. on the Lake, 640 Route 52, is no different. Lake Carmel can freeze over for skating and the Art Center in the former firehouse can be covered in snow but activities continue unabated. On Saturday, December 11, Arts on the Lake plans Holiday Potpourri, a performance of short pieces, stories and music for children and adults. Scheduled for 7 p.m., this holiday show will include work from some of the classes at Arts on the Lake as well as performances of musicians and actors. From the children’s art class taught by Mary Schreiber, an Ogden Nash Bestiary is being developed that will include art by the children and poems by Ogden Nash. Musical Advisory Committee members Kati Mac and Midhat Serbagi are planning musical elements for the Potpourri. The Garrison Art Center, 23 Depot Square in Garrsion hosts its Handmade Ornament Show and Sale as well as a student/faculty art exhibition Dec. 10 through Dec. 23. Check out the Juried Craft Showcase and Sale at the Putnam Art Council’s Belle Levine Gallery, 521 Kennicut Hill Rd., Mahopac any day except Mondays through Dec. 19 from 12-5 pm. Tilly Foster Farm, 100 Rt. 312 in Brewster hosts a Holiday Craft Fair on Sat., Dec. 4 from 9 am - 3 pm and Desmond Fish Library, 472 Rt. 9D in Garrision hosts its 19th annual Holiday Boutique Dec. 2-5 and Dec. 9-12. Authored by Kevin O’Brien, who has performed at the Center, Santa’s Password is the story of bad boy Jace who hacks into – you guessed it – Santa’s list of who is naughty and who is nice. Battle of the Bands in January Partnering with AFA Recording Studio, a Battle of the Bands is scheduled for the Lake Carmel Cultural Center on Friday, January 7.
