MAKE A PLAN
ABOUT THE
CONFERENCE
POLICY IS MORE THAN WORDS ON PAPER.
IT IS DECLARED OBJECTIVES.
IT IS THE FOUNDATION FOR ACTION.
Good policy stimulates potential. It
encourages growth, it feeds conversation
and it fosters innovation. An industry guided
by policy is one that has come of age, one
that is empowered and held accountable.
In one big year the Cape Town design
industry has stepped out of the wings and
into the spotlight, one yellow badge at a
time. It is living, tangible and visible, in a
variety of unique contexts. It is also working
and transforming lives. There is more to
design than meets the eye.
Policy and Design, in its broadest definition,
will converge centre stage at South Africa’s
first Design Policy Conference at the Cape
Town Stadium on 17 and 18 October.
The two-day event is titled MAKE A
PLAN, preserving a proudly South African
approach, of ingenuity and resourcefulness,
one that echoes across the continent as
unmistaken African innovation.
MAKE A PLAN brings together makers and
thinkers, doers and planners, executioners
and visionaries. It speaks to the design
community, NGOs, education and business,
policy makers and influencers, communities
and contexts informed by and transformed
by design.
MAKE A PLAN offers a geographically and
culturally diverse speaker core, some of the
best industry brains, from local shores and
beyond – designers, promoters, academics,
educators, policy makers and civil society.
Their conversation will span a range of
disciplines ranging from industrial design,
architecture and urban planning to fashion,
graphic design, service design, systems
design and more.
MAKE A PLAN explores – within a global
context – indigenous knowledge as the
foundation of our industry. It is for local and
regional stakeholders to participate in – and
lead – global conversation about African
innovation.
MAKE A PLAN presents what design has
done well, and can do better, for social,
cultural and economic development. Local
and regional stakeholders are uniquely
positioned to explore policies to best achieve
that: to bridge more divides, create more
beautiful spaces and beautiful things and
plan even better today, for tomorrow.
The conference is also the penultimate
signature event of Cape Town’s World
Design Capital journey, and will be perfectly
illustrated by the tandem Design House
Exhibition, “Transforming Cities”, in the
same venue, over the same period.
Cape Town is the quintessential melting pot,
a city alive with creativity, colour, sounds
separation, which, since 1994, has had to
rethink a city of integration.
Cape Town’s culture of design and innovation
was embedded in its fabric one year later
when the now annual Design Indaba event
was launched.
And here we are. Take to the streets and
