Introduction
At Lyreco, we are absolutely committed to striking a sustainable balance between
economic growth, social development and environment preservation. We believe these
elements are interdependent for a truly successful business environment. Our business
mission statement reads, “We want to be THE REFERENCE that the business
community turns to for office supplies solutions”.
Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are trapping the earth’s heat in the
atmosphere, leading to rising global temperatures, climate change and an uncertain
future. The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) proposed by the
Commonwealth Government aimed to affect certain large carbon emitters. To comply
with the scheme, emitters will need to account for direct fossil-fuel based emissions
(Scope 1). Scope 2 emissions from sources such as electricity use and Scope 3
emissions involving journey to work and embodied energy in goods and services will
further quantify an entity’s emissions. However, certain organisations not captured by
the CPRS are already seeking to minimize their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Among
these are some of Lyreco’s valued clients.
Lyreco would like you to be one of the first selected organisations globally; we invite
you to join us in an exciting new initiative to 100% offset the carbon emissions
embodied in your office products.
It is important to note that carbon offsetting should be no more than a part of any
organization’s management of its environmental impact and practices. Such issues as
waste management, energy efficiency and water use must be priorities. Carbon
offsetting can then be seen as merely one step towards becoming a more
environmentally responsible and sustainable organization.
How does it work?
The amount of C0 2 embodied in Lyreco’s office products is to be 100% carbon offset for
select customers. In July 2008, the Commonwealth Government Department of Climate
Change published an analysis of embodied emissions for members of its Greenhouse
Challenge Program in the “Climate Clever” website calculation set developed by the
University of Sydney. It translated embodied emissions into dollar terms. Climate
Clever’s default figures for stationery and office products are:
A. One tonne of C0 2 for each $5,000 spent on stationery & office products
B. One tonne of C0 2 for each $2,500 spent on copy paper.
When Lyreco buys office products and copy paper for our selected clients, we offset the
amount of C0 2 created by the products’ manufacture and transport. As the products
leave Lyreco’s gate on route to you our client, the embodied emissions have been
100% carbon offset.
How is the carbon offset?
The carbon in your office products will be offset in the biodiverse Lyreco Forest under
Canopy’s registered carbon abatement program. The carbon sequestration process
occurs over the lifetime of the planted trees. All carbon sinks are guaranteed and
registered on the land title. Australian government Greenhouse Friendly-accredited
VER’s (Voluntary Emissions Reduction units) are also available as an alternative to
trees.
Canopy is the longest running creator of legally-registered carbon sinks in South
Australia. From 2008-10, in cooperation with the South Australian Government and
Greening Australia, Canopy negotiated the planting of South Australia’s largest group of
carbon sinks, under the SA Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ “River
Murray Forest Project”.
Through its planting partner Greening Australia, Canopy has created thirteen biodiverse
carbon sinks near Kangaroo Creek, Murtho, Waikerie, Tailem Bend, Jockwar, Hartley,
the Coorong and Langhorne Creek on behalf of SAWater, Mitsubishi, CMI Toyota, the
Commonwealth Bank, Lyreco, Womadelaide, the City of Charles Sturt and others.
Confirmation of your participation
As part of your participation in this initiative your organisation will receive a signed
certificate that is valid for an initial period of five years as part of your trading
relationship with Lyreco.
You are also invited to visit the Lyreco Forest near the Coorong, which your
involvement in this initiative has helped to grow. In addition, you and/or your
organisation are welcome to participate in a tree-planting day in partnership with
Greening Australia SA.
Leonard Cohen, Executive Director of Canopy, is happy to provide more information in
relation to the Lyreco carbon offset process.
Reporting
Lyreco will report to Canopy monthly on your general office products and copy paper
expenditure in order to quantify the amount of C0 2 e required to be offset by Lyreco on
your behalf.
As part of your quarterly review with Lyreco, we will report on the amount of C0 2 e
created and offset on your behalf as well as the status of the biodiverse tree planting
associated with the offset of your office products.

How can we be sure that the emissions will actually be offset?
VERs: Canopy will provide offsets either in the Lyreco Forest or through VERs (“carbon
credits”) accredited by the Commonwealth Government. One VER will be surrendered
for each tonne of C0 2 e. Lyreco will receive certificates for all VERs.
National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS): As yet, no Australian offsets are available
under NCOS.

a 300,000 tree planting near the
Coorong
Physical and Legal security: The new Lyreco Forest is located at Morella Station near
Salt Creek (36°10'34.58"S, 139°42'41.57"E) on the C oorong and was registered under
the South Australian Forest Property Act, 2006 by the Crown Solicitor to ensure that the
trees can never be removed. The SA Government, having part-funded this planting
through the River Murray Forest Project, holds 1/3 rd of the carbon rights. Lyreco’s
interest is permanently recorded on the land title through Canopy’s carbon rights in a
document signed by Canopy, the landholder and the Premier, Mike Rann. In an
agreement with the SA Government, Greening Australia guarantees the biodiverse fireadapted
low rainfall plantings until they are able to resist fire and pests. The area is
fenced and plantings maintained regularly.
Verifiability and Auditability: Plantings are managed by Canopy and Greening
Australia according to the Australian Standard (AS 4978). Canopy is audited annually
by Edwards Marshall. Carbon assessments are conducted using the National Carbon
Assessment System provided by the Department of Climate Change and Energy
Efficiency. CSIRO will report triennially on carbon accrual at Canopy’s sites. Annual
progress reports are provided to Lyreco.
