O’BRIEN SHATTERS<br />
SCHOOL MILE RECORD<br />
Freshman Dena O’Brien started<br />
her track & field career at the<br />
<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charleston</strong> with<br />
a bang, breaking the school<br />
mile record with her 4:59.63<br />
performance at the Mountaineer<br />
Open Jan. 21.<br />
O’Brien’s time bettered the<br />
previous record by 14 seconds<br />
and also set a facility record at<br />
the Holmes Convocation Center<br />
in Boone, N.C.<br />

OF THE WEEK AGAIN<br />
Freshman Dena O’Brien earned<br />
SoCon Athlete <strong>of</strong> the Week<br />
honors for her performance at<br />
the Carolina Invitational on Feb.<br />

O’Brien, a native <strong>of</strong> Pelham,<br />
Ala., placed second in the<br />
3,000-meter run, setting a<br />
new C<strong>of</strong>C school record in<br />
9:46.83. She also bettered her<br />
own school record in the mile,<br />
finishing in first-place in the race<br />
in 4:59.28.<br />
O’BRIEN DOMINATES<br />
SOCON 5K<br />
Freshman Dena O’Brien broke<br />
a 22-year-old SoCon record<br />
as she won the SoCon Indoor<br />
Championship 5k in 16:46.59.<br />
O’Brien lapped the entire field<br />
and finished ahead <strong>of</strong> the<br />
second-place finisher by over a<br />
minute.<br />

Junior Emily Smith has had a<br />
remarkable two seasons for the<br />
<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charleston</strong> Track &<br />
Field team. The following are<br />
some <strong>of</strong> her accomplishments<br />
during her collegiate career.<br />
-2 time NCAA Regional Qualifier<br />
-School record in Indoor High<br />
Jump (1.78 meters)<br />
-School record in Outdoor High<br />
Jump (1.74 meters)<br />
-3 time Southern Conference<br />
Champion in the High Jump<br />
-15 top-five finishes in 20 total<br />
competitions in her career<br />
NO SENIORITIS FOR<br />
BOERSMA<br />
Senior Isable Boersma is <strong>of</strong>f to<br />
the best season <strong>of</strong> her career<br />
with the Cougars.<br />
She has set personal records<br />
in the 200-meter dash (26.94,<br />
fourth fastest in school history)<br />
and long jump (5.36 meters,<br />
third best in school history).<br />
Boersma went on to break<br />
the school record in the<br />
pentathlon at the SoCon Indoor<br />
Championships with a point total<br />
<strong>of</strong> 3,411. She finished second in<br />
the overall competition.<br />
