O’BRIEN SHATTERS
SCHOOL MILE RECORD
Freshman Dena O’Brien started
her track & field career at the
College of Charleston with
a bang, breaking the school
mile record with her 4:59.63
performance at the Mountaineer
Open Jan. 21.
O’Brien’s time bettered the
previous record by 14 seconds
and also set a facility record at
the Holmes Convocation Center
in Boone, N.C.

OF THE WEEK AGAIN
Freshman Dena O’Brien earned
SoCon Athlete of the Week
honors for her performance at
the Carolina Invitational on Feb.

O’Brien, a native of Pelham,
Ala., placed second in the
3,000-meter run, setting a
new CofC school record in
9:46.83. She also bettered her
own school record in the mile,
finishing in first-place in the race
in 4:59.28.
O’BRIEN DOMINATES
SOCON 5K
Freshman Dena O’Brien broke
a 22-year-old SoCon record
as she won the SoCon Indoor
Championship 5k in 16:46.59.
O’Brien lapped the entire field
and finished ahead of the
second-place finisher by over a
minute.

Junior Emily Smith has had a
remarkable two seasons for the
College of Charleston Track &
Field team. The following are
some of her accomplishments
during her collegiate career.
-2 time NCAA Regional Qualifier
-School record in Indoor High
Jump (1.78 meters)
-School record in Outdoor High
Jump (1.74 meters)
-3 time Southern Conference
Champion in the High Jump
-15 top-five finishes in 20 total
competitions in her career
NO SENIORITIS FOR
BOERSMA
Senior Isable Boersma is off to
the best season of her career
with the Cougars.
She has set personal records
in the 200-meter dash (26.94,
fourth fastest in school history)
and long jump (5.36 meters,
third best in school history).
Boersma went on to break
the school record in the
pentathlon at the SoCon Indoor
Championships with a point total
of 3,411. She finished second in
the overall competition.
