Park West 

The Cougars will host their only competition of the year as they 

co-host the Palmetto Classic with The Citadel on March 11th. 

This is the second season in which this meet has been contested. 

The meet will be held in Mt. Pleasant at the Park West facility.

LAST TIME OUT 

In the Cougars most recent competition they traveled to Clemson, 

S.C. for the Southern Conference Indoor Championship. 

Freshman Dena O’Brien won the 5k race as she broke a 22-yearold 

SoCon record clocking a time of 16:46.59. Senior Isabel 

Boersma broke the CofC school record in the pentathlon with 

3,411 points. Junior Alyssa D’Orazio also broke her own school 

record in the 800-meter run in 2:15.92. Additionally the women’s 

distance medley relay team set a new school record as they 

completed the race in 12:19.30. The Cougars finished in sixthplace 

with 49 points. O’Brien and Claire Goodson made the All- 

Freshman Team by placing top-three in their events.

Open Jan. 21. 

O’Brien’s time bettered the 

previous record by 14 seconds 

and also set a facility record at 

the Holmes Convocation Center

Boersma went on to break 

the school record in the 

pentathlon at the SoCon Indoor 

Championships with a point total 

of 3,411. She finished second in 

the overall competition.

AMY SEAGO • HEAD COACH 

EIGHTH YEAR AS COFC HEAD COACH • TENTH YEAR AS HEAD COACH 

Head coach Amy Seago continues to build 

the Cougars’ cross country and track & 

field programs as she enters her seventh 

year at the College of Charleston. 

Under Seago’s tutelage, Charleston’s 

athletes have captured six conference 

titles in four different individual events 

and earned three trips to the NCAA 

Outdoor Regionals. Most recently, 

high-jumper Emily Smith finished 25th 

with a jump of 5’8½” at the 2010 NCAA 

Outdoor Regionals after being crowned 

the Southern Conference champion 

at the indoor and runner-up at outdoor 

conference championships. Smith was 

named the SoCon Freshman of the Year 

for the 2008-09 indoor season. 

Seago also worked with thrower Chakosa 

Lance, who became the first College of 

Charleston athlete to compete at the NCAA 

Regionals in 2004, taking 24th place in 

the hammer throw. Lance returned to the 

NCAA Regionals in 2006 and posted a 

20th-place finish in the same event. She 

was also a three-time SoCon champion in 

the weight throw and currently holds the 

conference record of 64’1¼”. 

Charleston’s athletes have been named 

to all-conference teams 22 times since 

Seago took over the program in August 

2003. Additionally, three rookies were 

named to the Southern Conference Indoor 

Track & Field All-Freshman Team while 

five garnered outdoor all-freshman honors 

in 2009. In 2010 four athletes were named 

to the All-Freshman Team and newcomer 

Jelain McArthur was named Freshamn of 

the Year. 

Seago has also seen success with the 

Cougars’ cross country teams. She 

has coached the women’s team to a 

program-best fifth place at the SoCon 

Championships twice (2004, 2006). Ashley 

Arnold’s fifth-place finish in the 2004 

conference meet earned her a spot on the 

All-Southern Conference Team as well 

as Freshman of the Year honors. On the 

men’s side, she has helped develop Trevor 

Sprague, who broke the school record in 

the 8K three times in 2009 and posted the 

third-fastest time in the 10K at the NCAA 

Regionals at Louisville. 

Prior to coming to the College of 

Charleston, Seago served as the head 

women’s cross country and assistant 

men’s and women’s track & field coach at 

Washington & Lee University for two years. 

Under her guidance, the Generals finished 

second at the Old Dominion Athletic 

Conference Championships in 2002 and 

went on to place seventh at the NCAA 

Southeast Championships. She also had 

four athletes earn All-ODAC honors as well 

as two all-state and all-region performers. 

Working primarily with the distance 

runners during track & field season, Seago 

coached a conference champion in the 

mile at the ODAC Indoor Championships 

as well as five to all-ODAC performances. 

Seago began her career as a graduate 

assistant at Pittsburg State in Kansas. 

She aided the coaching staff in developing 

a team that finished 12th at the NCAA 

Division II Cross Country Championships 

in 2000. Two members of the Gorillas were 

given All-America status. She also assisted 

in the coaching of a NCAA National runnerup 

in the steeplechase. Seago graduated 

with a M.S. in Physical Education. 

Formerly Amy Schuckert, Seago was a 

track & field All-American at Allegheny 

College. A two-year captain of the cross 

country team, Seago qualified for the 

NCAA Cross Country Championships 

twice. Additionally, she was a six-time 

NCAA national qualifier in track and set the 

conference record in the 800m. She won 

12 North Coast Athletic Conference titles 

and was named to the all-conference team 

18 times. 

Named the 1999 Allegheny College 

Female Athlete of the Year, the Canton, 

Ohio native graduated with a B.A. in 

English. She was recognized in 2004 when 

she was named to the North Coast Athletic 

Conference All-Decade Team for both 

cross country and track & field. 

Seago is USATF Level II certified in 

endurance, throws and jumps. She and her 

husband, George Seago IV, were married 

in the summer of 2008 and currently reside 

in West Ashley.

BEN YOCUM • ASSISTANT COACH 

FIRST YEAR AS COFC ASST. COACH • FOURTH YEAR AS ASST. COACH 

Yocum begins his first year at the 

College of Charleston. Yocum spent 

the last two years working with the 

University of South Carolina Track and 

Field team. He assisted the staff with 

all administrative duties including the 

preparation for and execution of training 

sessions, equipment for practice and 

competition ordering, inventory, issues 

and storage. He also managed home 

meets for Track and Field as well as 

Cross Country events. 

From 2006-08 Yocum was an assistant 

coach at Benedict, working primarily 

with the pole vaults and throws. He also 

designed and implemented the strength 

training program for the track and field 

athletes. The Charlotte, N.C. native 

coached two conference champions and 

three all-conference athletes. 

On August 21, Seago announced Yocum 

and Heather Schmidt as her two new 

assistant coaches. 

“I’m thrilled to welcome Ben Yocum 

and Heather Schmidt to the College of 

Charleston,” Seago said. “Ben competed 

as a decathlete in college and was most 

recently a graduate assistant at his alma 

mater - the University of South Carolina 

- where he worked with some of the best 

coaches and athletes in the country.” 

Yocum was a member of the 

Appalachian State Track and Field 

team as a freshman in 2000, where he 

was an All-Conference member in the 

decathlon. He transferred to South 

Carolina and competed for three 

seasons, specializing in the decathlon 

and pentathlon. While there he was 

a Southeastern Conference threetime 

Scholar-Athlete, three-time letter 

winner and Iron Gamecock award 

winner. He earned his Bachelor of 

Science in Experimental Psychology 

from USC in 2003. 

Yocum is expected to finish his 

requirements for a Master’s of Science 

in Exercise Science from USC this 

month and has earned a USATF Level 

1 certification as well as a Level II in 

Jumps. 

“Both Heather and Ben have 

impressed me with their enthusiasm, 

hard work ethic and knowledge in the 

sport of Track & Field,” Seago said. 

“I have lofty goals for the Track & 

Field and Cross Country teams and 

with their help, our program will reach 

new heights. I’d like to thank the 

Administration for their commitment 

to our sport and for enabling me to 

bring both of these remarkable young 

coaches on board.”

Schmidt, in her first year at CofC comes 

to Charleston after a three-year stint 

with the Coffeyville Community College 

track and field program. While there she 

was responsible for many facets of the 

program including recruiting and training 

of the athletes in the men’s and women’s 

jumps. During Schmidt’s tenure, seven 

of the 12 school records at CCC were 

broken in the jumping events. As 

recruiting coordinator, she played an 

integral role in increasing the women’s 

program from seven to 30 athletes in 

one year and in 2009 the team jumped 

from eighth in the region to second. 

During her coaching career Schmidt 

has helped produce two National Junior 

College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 

All-Americans, 12 Coaches Association 

All-Americans and 38 National Meet 

Qualifiers. 

On August 21, Seago announced Yocum 

and Schmidt as her two new assistant 

coaches. 

“I’m thrilled to welcome Ben Yocum 

and Heather Schmidt to the College of 

Charleston,” Seago said. Heather just 

finished a three year coaching stint at 

Coffeyville Community College where 

she has built a remarkable resume’ 

in the jumping events. Additionally, 

this summer she participated in the 

“Emerging Elite Coaches” program at 

the Olympic training center.” 

Schmidt earned her Bachelor of Arts 

degree in Psychology from Marietta 

College in Marietta, Ohio in 2004. 

While there she competed in the 

long, high and triple jumps and well 

as in the javelin, sprints and relays. 

She also played volleyball and 

basketball. Schmidt was a graduate 

and teaching assistant while earning 

her Master’s Degree in Psychology at 

Ohio University in Athens, Ohio from 

2004-06. 

Schmidt is USATF Level 1 certified 

and was selected to attend the USATF 

Emerging Elite Coaches Camp in 

Chula Vista, Calif. 

“Both Heather and Ben have 

impressed me with their enthusiasm, 

hard work ethic and knowledge in the 

sport of Track & Field,” Seago said. 

“I have lofty goals for the Track & 

Field and Cross Country teams and 

with their help, our program will reach
