Furthering the Field

The unique Fire Watchtower in Mt. Morris Park was
assisted with Technical Services Center guidance as
well as an Upper Manhattan Historic Preservation Fund
grant (1). We also advised the restoration of 110
Bridge Street’s colorful cornices (2) and provided an
easement for 164 East 70th Street (3).
TSC hosted and presented at a range of conferences. TSC Director Alex
Herrera delivered a slideshow lecture on the evolution of Manhattan’s
Stone Street at the American Planning Association’s annual conference in
Washington DC.
In conjunction with the New York Council of Cooperatives and
Condominiums, TSC held two evening seminars that examined solutions
to the varied restoration and conservation challenges posed by New
York’s unparalleled stock of historic apartment buildings.
And on March 27, the Conservancy and the Association for
Preservation Technology (APT) sponsored a one-day symposium, State
of the Art Techniques for Monitoring and Protecting Historic Structures.
Over 400 attended the program at Columbia University.

Easements
A voluntary legal agreement between a
property owner and a non-profit organization
that restricts future changes to the
property and requires cyclical inspections, a
preservation easement assures that historic
properties are well maintained. In 2004,
the Conservancy accepted eight new
preservation easements, all in Manhattan.
