E-mail news, information and/or questions to Law Alumni Council, Trustees Meet April 16-17 The Levin College of Law’s Law Alumni Council and Law Center Association Board of Trustees will gather here Friday and Saturday, April 16-17, for business meetings and other activities in conjunction with the University of Florida’s first-ever “Stakeholder’s Weekend.” The UF Foundation is hosting Stakeholder’s Weekend to spotlight the vital role private giving plays in UF’s success. Events include an information session 11 a.m.-noon April 17 in Emerson Alumni Hall President’s Room with UF President J. Bernard Machen and UF Foundation representatives; and an endowment luncheon 12:30-2:30 p.m. that day in the Florida Gym. (Details online at www.uff.ufl.edu/stakeholder.) Levin College of Law Newsletter • April 5, 2004 Incoming Law College Council Board Invites Student Participation 2004-05 Law College Council (LCC) Vice President Najah Gibson (from left), President Lee Harang, Secretary Erica Williams and Treasurer Steve Martin invite students to participate in the council, which exists to present the views and promote the interests of law students. The LCC general board meets today, April 5, and Monday, April 19, at 6 p.m in 190B Holland Hall. Each meeting features open forums where students may address the council and voice their concerns. Black was named a University of Florida Distinguished Alumna in 1982, and is UF Law Center Association trustee emeritus; College for New Florida Circuit and County Judges dean, and on the faculty of the National Judicial College. CSRRR Announcements The Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations (CSRRR) encourages students to apply for the following: • Apply by June 1 to CSRRR for the 2004-05 Evan Yegelwel Fellowship. The award is $2,000, and supports student research and scholarship toward reducing crime motivated by hate, prejudice or stereotyping. Details are on the CSRRR website at www.law.ufl.edu/centers/csrrr/. • CSRRR needs a summer research assistant to assist staff on multiple projects. Ten hours per week commitment. Strong computer skills — including webpage and database design — desired. “This is exciting, important work — come grow with us!” said Assistant Director Melissa Bamba. In addition, CSRRR invites everyone to attend its Spring Lecture 4-5:30 p.m. Monday, April 12, in Emerson Alumni Hall. George Washington University Law Professor Paul Butler will speak on, “Much Respect: Toward a Hip-Hop Theory of Punishment,” based on his forthcoming article in the Stanford Law Review. A pre-lecture reception will be held 2-3 p.m. in the faculty dining room. Three Rivers Legal Services Volunteer Programs AmeriCorps attorneys at Three Rivers Legal Services, Inc. (TRLS) will man an informational table on the law school concourse 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, to discuss the Pro Bono Legal Corps program, public interest law and volunteer opportunities at TRLS. TRLS offers four separate summer volunteer programs for law students: Housing Clinic, Domestic Violence Outreach, Consumer Debt Clinic and Elder Intake/Outreach. Students may sign up for more than one (rank them in order of preference), and participate in more than one on a space available basis. Landlord/Tenant returning volunteers have preference for “mentor” slots in the Housing Clinic. For all other slots and clinics, priority is given to students who have returned the student volunteer survey (available outside the Center for Career Services). Students must be able to attend the entire training session to participate in any clinic. To participate, e-mail your registration requests — including your name, program requests in order of preference, e-mail and street addresses, phone number and year/semester — to Rhonda Chung-de Cambre at rhonda.decambre@trls.org. Registration closes April 16, and placements will be sent by April 23. Full program details are availble on boards outside Career Services or at the TRLS table on the concourse. ❒ Visiting Scholar Speaks on Biodiversity Dr. Jim Chen (front, right), James L. Krusemark Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School, gave a presentation, “Across the Apocalypse on Horseback: Imperfect legal Responses to Biodiversity Loss,” last week to UF law students in the Environmental and Land Use Law Program. Headed by Professor Alyson Flournoy (fifth from left, with fellow ELUL faculty Mark Fenster, second from left, Michael Allan Wolf, fourth from left, Steve Powell, second from right, and Christine Klein, first from right, and program students), the program’s deep and diverse course offerings and extracurricular activities and top faculty are helping bring the UF College of Law to the forefront in this growing area, as witnessed by the law school’s recent ranking in the top 10 percent in the nation for Environmental Law. ❒ Lexis News Students have one more opportunity to get Lexis-certified this semester. Help With Public Record Searches Lexis has recently added to its Public Records database for students. In addition to searching real property records and criminal and civil filings, students also can search physician records and divorce, marriage and death records. Just go to the Public Records tab to view more sources. (Remember, when searching public records you must click NEW SEARCH or CONTINUE SEARCH to enter your terms, and use the w/3 connecter between the first & last name, i.e. bonita w/3 young.) Lexis also provides free study aids online for Torts, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Criminal Procedure and more.
