Top Drive Systems
TESCO pioneered the portable top drive system more than a decade
ago, enabling drillers to achieve the time and money saving benefits
of top drive drilling on just about any rig, on land or offshore.
Our hydraulic and electric top drive systems come in capacities
from 150 to 650 tons and from 400 to 1350 HP. This
wide variety enables TESCO to meet every need,
from large offshore or conventional derricks
to small, truck-mounted units. In addition to
being easy to transport and install with little
or no modification to the rig, TESCO top drive
systems are highly versatile. They can be used for
drilling, reaming and backreaming, and running casing in
straight-hole, directional, horizontal, underbalanced, air or gas
drilling. In tight holes they can circulate drilling fluids while
simultaneously reciprocating and rotating the string. For oriented
directional drilling or fishing, our system allows both clockwise and
counterclockwise rotation, with highly controlled torque.

efficiency of our top drives through the support
of safe and efficient double or triple stands
of pipe, which can significantly reduce
the number of necessary connections.

Through its Azimuth Tubular Services, TESCO delivers a comprehensive scope of
superior tubular services – combining both conventional casing and tubing tools with
patented technologies. Our solutions consist of a full line of services including casing
running, tubing running, torque monitoring, pick-up and laydown, and installation
of control lines for complex well completions. TESCO has no peer that provides the

TESCO’s Casing Drive System is a technologically superior casing running

Casing Drive System
TESCO’s Casing Drive System (CDS) is a technology
innovation that creates improvements in safety and performance
in running casing. TESCO’s CDS technology is available for all
top drive equipped drilling rigs, bringing all the advantages of
top drive drilling to your casing running operations.
The CDS improves operational efficiency through its
ability to circulate, reciprocate and rotate the casing string
simultaneously. This eliminates the costly, time-consuming
process of laying down casing and picking up the drill string to
ream or redrill the well to get casing to bottom. It also provides
better torque control than power tongs and
significantly reduces the chance of thread
damage or galling.
TESCO’s CDS has proven its efficiency in
millions and millions of feet of casing, and
has been used successfully for running or
reaming casing to bottom in both directional
and vertical problem wells. It is used daily as the
method to transmit drilling mechanical and hydraulic
power to the bit in TESCO’s Casing Drilling® operations.

Casing Drilling ® Services
TESCO’s CASING DRILLING® technology is changing the way wells
are drilled. The CASING DRILLING® process generates value for the
operator by keeping assets protected behind casing as the drilling
proceeds. With easily tapped reservoirs in decline, difficult wells are
generating more trouble and non-productive time.
CASING DRILLING® provides a solution for a number of
well shapes and challenges including vertical, horizontal,
under-balanced, offshore and onshore, difficult geo-mechanical
environments, hard and soft formations among others. CASING
DRILLING® is most effective in areas where hole problems have
been severe with drill pipe such as lost returns, wellbore stability
and well control. TESCO’s experience in CASING DRILLING® provides
a greater chance of success when drilling through difficult intervals.
TESCO has a long history of delivering value to our customers
with our CASING DRILLING® process. While CASING DRILLING®,
TESCO has run numerous retrievable bottom hole assemblies (BHA)
with reliability approaching 100%. TESCO has drilled intervals
directionally up to 90 degrees and 150 degree azimuth turns. Hole
diameters range from 6” to 17-1/2” in both oil and water based
mud systems. In underbalanced or high-pressure applications, well
control is simplified as casing is allways on bottom.

Multiple Control Line Running System (MCLRS)
Our MCLRS allows control lines to enter the system and attach to the tubing on one
or both sides of the pipe without any manual manipulation of control lines. With this
patented system, you will never pass control and injection lines through the
slips. In addition to improving operational efficiency, enabling you to run up to
10 lines on two sides of the pipe, safety is improved because no one is required to
ride a belt in order to secure sheaves.
With three simple lifts that get all the equipment to the floor, rig up takes
less than two hours. In addition, the rig space is optimized since the tongs are operated
remotely on top of the platform, providing less competition for floor space.
Markfree Handling System
Many corrosive drilling environments require the use of chrome tubulars to ensure the string’s
integrity. TESCO’s Markfree Handling System gets tubulars to TD without slip marks or pipe
damage. The patented Safety-Slip design prevents pipe scratches that often lead to corrosion
in the string. And, the patented Smooth Slip Running Method prevents casing and tubing
running delays. The Markfree Handling System is a critical tool for deep-water offshore
completions, deep wells and heavy strings.
TesTORK Torque Monitoring Service
The TesTORK Torque Monitoring Service gives TESCO clients an easy method for monitoring
connection assembly torques and provides an audit trail for connection make-up. The portable, robust
system is easily set-up and configured. Torque calibration occurs at the rig floor and at the connection
level and can be done in a matter of minutes. Run by a single operator, TesTORK keeps a tally of casing
and an accurate diary of make-up events. TesTork insures data integrity,
security and reports in metric and SI units.

Casing Accessories
TESCO makes available a full line of accessories that enhance CASING DRILLING® and casing running
operations. Our leadership position in casing running technologies and global experience compels us
to stay at the forefront of developing tools that streamline the process. We inventory a complete line of
proprietary and conventional accessories around the world that simplify casing operations.
Multi-Lobe Torque (MLT) Rings The TESCO MLT ring is a high performance,
low cost OCTG connection enhancement that delivers premium performance to standard API
Casing and Tubing. MLT rings fit standard API “off the shelf” casing and tubing extending
the utility of operator pipe inventories. They are particularly effective when used on problem
wellbores with a top drive and CDS. Installation is fast and easy and can be done at wellsite,
pipe yard or mill. MLT rings are compatible with full API make-up tolerances through
a unique gauging system and a selection of ring heights specific to the size and weight of the
tubing or casing.
Casing Running & Reaming Tool - Warthog TESCO’s Casing Running and Reaming
Tool (CRRT), or Warthog, helps get your casing to TD despite compromising hole conditions such as
bridges, ledges, doglegs, sloughing formations and deviated holes. The Warthog combines hydraulic
and mechanical energy to break through downhole obstructions and a
nosecone profile that cleans and circulates. Three spiral helix external
blades help condition the hole and provide centralization for cementing.
Pump Down Displacement Plug TESCO’s Pump Down Displacement Plug (PDDP) is a
cementing accessory for use with CASING DRILLING® and Casing Running operations. The PDDP is
pumped behind the cement job to displace the cement replacing conventional displacement plugs. It
can be pumped down at normal pump rates and lands in the casing profile nipple. When landed, the
solid plug holds backpressure preventing backflow and allows operators to continue with minimized
risk of cement U-tubing.
Hydro-Form Centralizers and Stabilizers Hydro-Form Centralizers
are used in the casing string to facilitate improved cementing. Stabilizers are used
at the bottom of a “drill-in” CASING DRILLING® string to stabilize the BHA (Bottom
Hole Assembly). TESCO’s patented design and attachment method provides superior
strength and rigidity capable of withstanding dynamic downhole loads while
maintaining standoff under large side forces without crushing. TESCO’s Centralizers
and Stabilizers provide positive centralization for cementing in vertical and deviated
wells for both CASING DRILLING® and Casing Running applications. These accessories
facilitate rotation of the casing string, a significant advantage for cementing operations.

Snubbing Technology
Our Push Pull Machine (PPM) for snubbing tubulars in live wells allows underbalanced drilling, well
completions and other operations to be carried out without the need to kill the
well, and more important, allows all pipe handling operations to be
undertaken at the rig floor level, eliminating the need for personnel to be
working above the live well in a basket. In shallow, extendedreach
horizontal wells, by transferring drilling weight to the bit
our PPM has been proven to improve ROP during slide intervals
and extends measured depth as much as 1000ft beyond that
achieved by conventional drilling methods. The PPM also has
been used to push casing in wells that are difficult or impossible
+1000 feet
to case to total depth using conventional methods. A PPM can be
installed in most rigs, controlled from anywhere on the rig floor and
adapted to most rotary-table bushing sizes and hold-down needs.
Tesco Ultrex Lubricants
TESCO distributes a full line of performance lubricants for oilfield applications. Ultrex
Lubricants are supplied with all TESCO equipment in gear cases, pump drives,
hydraulic systems, engines, bearings and all friction points. Many Ultrex Lubricants
are 100% synthetic and wont breakdown in extreme conditions. They meet or
exceed all OEM specifications and the TESCO standard of excellence. Ultrex provides
superior protection from heavy loads, dirt, dust, water and heat. Its extended drain
interval makes it the lubricant of choice for products used in severe duty applications.
Aftermarket Sales and Service
TESCO’s team of dedicated service and repair technicians commissions new units and re-certifies
working units including top drives, power units and other TESCO products. TESCO maintenance people
are among the most well trained in the business. Through a series of apprenticeship programs,
technical training and practical field experience, the TESCO team is on the job and ready to work. They
have intimate experience with the operation and capabilities of all TESCO equipment making them an
invaluable member of your project. Field personnel
provide rig-up and installation services as well as
on-site training and Top Drive supervision.
Maintenance contracts are also available. Across the
street or around the world, TESCO service people are
available 24/7/365 to meet the needs of your project.
