Fall 2007 Page 8 GARDEN STATE C.O.P.S. CHAPTER NEWSLETTER C.O.P.S. 2008 Hands-On Programs National C.O.P.S. sponsors several hand on programs for survivors. These very worthwhile programs are offered at no cost to the survivor. Our chapter will reimburse any survivor who attends one of these programs for their travel expenses – no matter what year your officer died. The Retreats for 2007 are now over. Anyone who has attended any of these programs please drop us a line to let everyone know how it was. Please submit your travel receipts for reimbursement. C.O.P.S. offers the following survivor programs: 2008 Adult Children's Retreat – July. 2008 "C.O.P.S. Kids" Camp (ages 6-14) – end of July into August (same week as Outward Bound). 2008 C.O.P.S. Outward Bound Adventure (ages 15-20) – end of July into August (same week as C.O.P.S. Kids Camp). 2008 C.O.P.S. Siblings' Retreat – September. 2008 C.O.P.S. Surviving Spouses Getaway – September. 2008 C.O.P.S. Parents Retreat – October. 2008 C.O.P.S. In-Laws Retreat – October. Survivors will normally be notified by National C.O.P.S.. If you are not on their mailing list contact us for information. C.O.P.S. Walk National C.O.P.S. will be holding the 3rd annual C.O.P.S. Walk this October. Survivors and friends will walk 25 miles in two days along the scenic Potomic River outside of Washington DC to raise funds for National C.O.P.S.. Madeline Neumann (w ’89) walked the first year, Jennifer Ventura (w ’01) walked last year, and this year Carol Dechen (w ’00) and Donna Lamonico (w ’81 Survivors of the Triangle) are walking. Election of New Officers and Appointment of Trustees During our Annual Meeting on June 2 the following people were elected to office: President: Mike Miller Vice President: Kevin Laughery Secretary: John I. Ciuppa Treasurer: Bill Bosworth Mike Miller nominated the following people for the position of Trustee and the Board agreed: Madeline Neumann Dennis Cudnik Carol Dechen Veronica Venditte C.O.P.S. Awareness We are looking for ideas to raise awareness for the C.O.P.S. organization. National C.O.P.S. awareness week is in March. Please let us know if you have an idea to help spread the news about our C.O.P.S. organization. Contact anyone of our board members listed on our web site at www.gardenstatecops.com Payroll Deductions Mike Miller and Kevin Laughery are working on a payroll deduction campaign. They plan to approach and visit law enforcement agencies throughout our state and give a presentation requesting them to implement payroll deductions. The goal is to have officers donate to our chapter through payroll deductions. By giving just $1 a week to Garden State C.O.P.S., the financial support to our chapter would be tremendous. Fall 2007 Page 9 GARDEN STATE C.O.P.S. CHAPTER NEWSLETTER Neptune PBA Dinner to benefit Garden State C.O.P.S. The Monmouth County PBA Conference is holding its inaugural Policemen’s Ball on Friday, November 2, 2007 honoring Madeline Neumann. The black tie event is hosted by Neptune PBA Local #74. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Garden State C.O.P.S.. Tickets are $125 per person. If you are interested in attending, please contact the Event Chairman Scott Cox of Neptune Twp. Police Department at 732-620-3801 by October 19th. Mark your calendar! Our annual Holiday Party is set for Sunday, December 9th at 12:00 noon. We will have a buffet luncheon catered by Delvetto’s Restaurant at the Youth Temple in Ocean Grove (directly across from the Great Auditorium). We always have such fun at this party; the adults sit back and relax over a great lunch while the children are kept busy with crafts and a visit from Santa. If you are interested in coming, please respond by December 1st with Madeline Neumann at 609-625-1024 or gssnjcops@aol.com. Invitations are due to go out the beginning of November. C.O.P.S. Chapter Training Another hands-on training program offered by the parent organization of Concerns for Police Survivors is the C.O.P.S. Chapter training. This training is an annual mandatory training session that each chapter must send at least one representative. This year the session was attended by Mike Miller (current President of our Garden State Chapter) and Carol Dechen (current Trustee of our Garden State Chapter). Survivor Carmen Petrelli was a travel partner and attended Chapter training as a representative from the New Jersey State Police Survivors of the Triangle C.O.P.S. Chapter. The venue for the training was the YMCA Trout Lodge in Potosi, Missouri. The trip was adventuresome and fun, to say the least. Getting out of the Philadelphia Airport seemed to be the most troublesome part of the trip. Delay after delay resulted in us standing in numerous long lines to rebook flights for one reason or another. Our day began at 5am and ended when we arrived at our destination at 10pm. If it wasn’t for the kindness of a fellow survivor, who lives in the vicinity of the Saint Louis Airport and did not mind waiting for the delayed trio from New Jersey, we might not have made it to our final destination. We were quite thankful for our angel in a minivan to aid us in getting to our meeting place in the woods of Missouri. As one of the newest members of the Board, I learned some valuable information about the hands-on programs of C.O.P.S.. We learned what other chapters are doing in memory of their fallen officers and obtained some tips for fund-raising. The sessions were full of fun, laughter, sorrow and joy as we remembered our officers. The YMCA lodge offers a spectacular view from the balcony of your room or from the port side of a pontoon boat. Either way, it was another memorable experience with new found friends and staff members from C.O.P.S. at our side. Visit us at: www.gardenstatecops.com
