Miami Lakes Educational Center is a new approach to public high school education. Launched 

by insightful educators and ambitions industry leaders, MLEC is designed to immerse students 

in a rigorous learning environment that engages their interest in various fields such as graphic 

design, international business and marketing, pre-nursing, automotive service technology, 

and computer network administration.

August 2000, MLEC High 

School Division opened its 

doors to approximately 350 

9th and lOth graders. And so 

began a new chapter of 

education, with the convergence 

of an adult vocational 

center and a secondary 

academic institution. With 

its first fruits of labor, a new 

highly marketable wave of 

high school graduates is 

scheduled to be ripe for the 

picking by employee-hungry 

industries by mid 2003. 

Those 9th and lOth graders 

are to be the precedence for, 

not only the MLEC students 

who follow them, but also 

for all the institutions that 

are built upon the revolutionary 

groundwork that 

MLEC has set. 

MLEC involves the parents 

and guardians as much as the 

students, by ensuring that the 

parents and guardians are 

aware of their children's 

academic progress and 

attendance at all times. We 

ensure that the learningconducive 

environment 

begins far before 7:30 and 

continues far after 2:30. 

With the beginning of a 

new academic year approaching, 

the 2001-2002 New 

Student Orientation is the 

preamble to this parent/ 

school collaboration. Parents 

with their students in tow 

poured into the dining hall 

eager to be involved in their 

children's eminent success. 

With a passionate faculty 

led by a competent and 

dedicated administrative 

body, MLEC has set the 

standard for schools of its

A special assembly was held to welcome the 

students, faculty, and staff of MLEC to a new school year. 

This "Meet and Greet" assembly was our first trip to the F 

Cafeteria. 

During the assembly, students were introduced to 

our new principal Ms. Rosa D. Borgen. Ms. Borgen 

expressed how excited she is to be our principal and 

reminded us that she has high expectations for each 

individual students and for us as a school. 

Also present was Ms. Thomas, our returning viceprincipal, 

who encouraged students to do well and get 

involved in activities. Our returning assistant principal, 

Mr. Garcia, spoke to the students about the importance of

brand new staff. Students were pleased to find out the

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL 

RO ... ~ D. BORGEN 

This has been the second year of operation of the high school division of Miami Lakes 

Educational Center, a dual-delivery educational institution which encompasses both secondary and postsecondary 

students attending classes simultaneously. We are unique in our district since acceptance into 

our program allows you to receive a regular or college-ready high school diploma and earn a certificate oL 

completion in any of the teclmical progr.nns offered. We have also entered into unique partnerships with 

business and industry that allow for specialized training in seven!! technical areas, and our school has 

been designated as an AutoCAD training center, a Toyota T-Ten and collision training center, a CISCO 

and an AYES (Automotive Youth Educational System) program center. 

This year the student body has increased to double the number from 300 to 7 50 students, and we 

ex-pect U1e enrollment to continue to increase in the future. Our second high school building was 

completed, and a dedication ceremony for the high school was held. 

Congratulations are in order to all of you who successfully completed your school year, 

especially to the class of 2003, which will be our first graduating class. You are setting the example. 

forging traditions and trails for other students to follow in your footsteps. In essence, you are making 

history in your school. We have grown together this year, and you have developed a sense of purpose 

and accomplishment that accompany a job well done. 

Dedicated teachers have given you a firm academic and teclmicallvocational foundation. They 

have raised your awareness about the rewards of education. You have been taught to set objectives and

I am very proud of our faculty and staff who devote their time and efforts toward achieving

Senior High School and has worked

develop an alliance for success. 

Teachers are able to introduce parents to

September 11, 2001 will be remembered as one of the most horrific days 

our country has ever experienced! Upon hearing of the first attack on the 

World Trade Center, parents and students paused for a moment of silence. 

This event affected everyone in various ways, however, the Miami Lakes 

Educational Center family did not stand idly by. We gave blood, made 

monetary donations, and participated in a bear drive.

Coming of Age 

The celebration of a young girl's transition to womanhood, occurs as a rite of passage in many 

cultures. For those of Hispanic descent, this tradition is called Quinces (after the Spanish word 

denoting the number 15). Quinces are similar to sweet-sixteens and the coming out of a debutante, 

but are more ceremonial. All of these celebrations incorporate instances of symbolism. For 

example, the young woman usually wears a white gown and long white gloves that are reminiscent 

of wedding attire; or a long gown in a pastel color (this symbolizes innocence), and a tiara. At the 

beginning of some Quinces celebrations, the young lady's shoes are flat and then changed by the 

father during the procession to symbolize his acceptance and support of the fact that his daughter is 

entering womanhood. Preparations for these celebrations often begin as early as a year before. 

During this time, the young lady and her family must make many decisions. Most importantly, they 

must decide what traditions will be followed.
