Southern Dalarna brings together most of the best of Dalarna and Sweden. Modern city life 

meets rich culture and fantastic nature experiences that will be remembered for a long time. 

Southern Dalarna offers rivers, lakes, forests, 

mountains and valleys, in other words, there 

are lots of opportunities for everything from 

canoeing and fishing adventures to cycling 

excursions and hiking. In the winter, the area 

is transformed into an eldorado for skiers and 

ice skaters with popular, high-class facilities for 

cross-country and downhill skiing, and many 

kilometres of ploughed skating tracks. After a 

day of nature experiences and exciting activities, 

you’re close to city comforts, restaurants 

and shopping. 

Southern Dalarna has a long history of 

farming, forestry and mining, and today the 

industries are characterised by high technology. 

A visit to some of the interesting museums and 

historic settings may provide the explanation 

for the success of many of the entrepreneurs 

through creative solutions. The Mining Area of 

the Great Copper Mountain in Falun has been 

designated by UNESCO as one of the world’s 

most important places and has a long, exciting 

history and activities for all the family. 

Our cultural life is rich and varied. Colourful 

handicraft traditions and genuine Dala music 

meet cool music festivals for all tastes and 

ages. 

One of Sweden’s best-known and loved artists, 

Carl Larsson, lived and worked in Dalarna 

at the end of the 19th century. Today, his 

home in Sundborn is one of our most visited 

attractions. 

In our towns and genuine Dala villages, the 

characteristic wooden houses take their red 

colour from the traditional Swedish red paint, 

Falu Rödfärg. In the past when people used to 

make their living from what they produced on 

their farms, they moved their grazing animals 

to summer farms to save the grazing at home 

on the farm. Today, most of these summer 

farms do not have animals, though a few are 

still run as summer farms with cows and goats. 

Don’t miss a visit to one of these gems! Several 

of the summer farms are now connected by 

footpaths and cycleways. 

Falun The town is 

characterised by the historic 

settings around the world 

heritage site of the Mining 

Area of the Great Copper 

Mountain in Falun. In the 

winter, Lake Runn between 

Falun and Borlänge is also 

transformed into a paradise 

for long-distance skaters 

from around the world. 

Borlänge Here you’ll 

find Dalarna’s biggest range 

of shops and restaurants. In 

the summer, Sweden’s biggest 

music festival Peace & 

Love is arranged in Borlänge, 

and in the winter the ski 

resort of Romme Alpin offers 

skiing for all the family. 

Gagnef Here you’ll find 

unique cultural surroundings 

with summer farms and 

works settings connected by 

footpaths. The mighty rapids 

of Västerdalälven River 

are an eldorado for fishing 

and white water kayaking. 

Österdalälven River flows 

much more slowly. The two 

rivers meet in Djurås to form 

Dalälven River. 

Ludvika In Ludvika, 

Säfsen Resort is a year-round 

facility with MTB trails, footpaths, 

a ski resort and good 

fishing. Garden enthusiasts 

should not miss a visit to 

Disponentparken Park, and 

there’s exciting cultural history 

at Grangärde Finnmark 

where, among other things, 

the poet Dan Andersson 

was born. 

Smedjebacken 

Smedjebacken offers unique 

nature with the nature 

reserve Malingsbo-Kloten – 

a wilderness paradise. Hike, 

cycle, paddle, fish or join a 

moose or beaver safari. The 

tradition of smithery is alive 

and well here and you can 

be a smith for a day in the 

big forge. 

Säter Nice old wooden 

town – one of the best preserved 

in Sweden. Säterdalen 

with footpaths, playgrounds 

and a mini summer farm is 

also located here. The surrounding 

farmland is dotted 

with charming farm shops 

selling locally produced food 

like crispbread that has been 

baked by hand in wood-fired 

ovens.

Skating 

Long-distance skating has 

become a very popular winter

were three limestone caves here, 

but only one can be visited and 

reached using the boat. Nature

1700 with annexes, chapel and

Strömsholm Canal 

Strömsholm Canal starts in Smedjebacken 

harbour and follows the 

Kolbäcksån water system through 

Sweden’s oldest works district 

in varied, scenic landscape. The 

canal, which is Sweden’s second 

oldest, passes through 14 lakes. 

The 110 km waterway stretches 

from Smedjebacken in the north 

to Strömsholm in the south. Only 

12 km of the canal were dug by 

hand. There are 26 locks and an 

overall rise of 100 m. The locks 

are therefore relatively high and 

the rise is the highest in Sweden. 

Tombo Ice Mine 

Söderbärke 

Ore was mined here from the 

17th century until 1918. This 

mine is of special interest due to 

the year-round ice formation in 

the open pit. The ice spreads the 

cold, and the green lichens and 

the sound of the water drops give 

an unusual atmosphere to the 

environment. Self-guided visits. 

Skräddartorp Falls 

Hedstömmen’s highest falls by the 

outflow from Lake Söndagssjön. 

Up until 1953, it was a floating 

channel. Camp and study centre 

by north Skräddartorp. Located in 

Malingsbo-Kloten recreation area.

Säterdalen is a 5 km system of 

ravines located between the 

community of Säter and Dalälven 

River with an extensive system 

of trails offering the visitor an 

unforgettable experience. Part of 

Säterdalen is a nature reserve.

Risshytte Hage 

Risshytte Hage is located approx 

10 km west of Säter towards 

Smedjebacken. The reserve 

consists largely of damp forest 

and grove land that benefit from 

the lime in the ground. A large 

number of orchids grow in the 

reserve, of which lady’s slipper is 

the most striking. 

Bispbergsklack 

The mountain rises 350 m asl, 

steeply above the surrounding 

agricultural landscape. The ridge 

is on the southwestern side of 

the mountain. In good weather, 

Lugnet ski jump in Falun, Kupolen 

in Borlänge and the headframes 

in Garpenberg, not to mention all 

the towers and churches nearby, 

can be made out from Bispberg 

Ridge. The inaccessible mountain 

slopes are important breeding 

grounds for the eagle owl and 

others.
