THANK YOU!
Your Will: The Final Outworking
of Your Stewardship on Earth
The execution of your will according to your instructions
is the final outworking of your stewardship on earth. A valid,
written will is an instrument by which you can ensure that your
intentions will be carried out. A statement of faith or a
"Christian Preamble" is an excellent way to share your faith
with anyone who comes in contact with your will. Your family members and friends can be comforted to
know in writing of your Christian faith and can also be encouraged to commit themselves to faith in Jesus
Christ if they have not already done so.
More than three out of ten Americans will die before retirement. Ten out of ten will die eventually! Yet
seven out of ten Americans die without a will! When there's no will, the courts make important decisions
that most people would want to have made themselves–including who the children's guardians should be
and exactly where the assets should go. Some people write their own will, but even attorney-drawn wills
are inexpensive considering the vital purpose they serve. The most costly alternative is no will at all!
Once written, wills should be periodically updated. As family needs or circumstances change, wills
should be revised accordingly.
If parents decide to give most or all of their estate
to God's kingdom, they should explain their plans to
their children. Consider having a family conference or
writing out in detail what your plans are, then asking
each adult child to get back to you with his or her
response. This strategic estate planning can prevent
false expectations and free children from possible
resentment and confusion after their parents' death.
As Christians, remember this: It is God's money, not
ours, and not our children's. It is really up to Him to
give direction concerning the distribution of whatever
wealth He has provided as He deems appropriate. God
has appointed us as "stewards" or managers of His resources. "Moreover, it is required of stewards that they
be found trustworthy" (1 Corinthians 4:2).
