Five-O-Five Toastmasters Welcomes Jana Barnhill by Trish Brown DTM Which Way Did They Go? I’m Their Leader! was the subject of Toastmasters International President Jana Barnhill’s presentation at the Five-O-Five Toastmasters Club meeting on Wednesday 20 May. Jana wowed the 60 attendees with her lively and informative presentation, her warm greetings and her overall enthusiasm and enjoyment in life. The meeting was attended by members of Toastmaster Clubs across the city, staff of the State Revenue Office and prospective members. Jana’s leadership presentation had many tips and insights for Team Leaders that could be applied in many situations. Feedback comments included: “Jana had some great tips that I’m going to go back and use in my team”; “You can never have too many reminders about what Team Leadership is really about”; “I didn’t know that Toastmasters also involved leadership training”. After her presentation Jana presented Paul Broderick, the Commissioner of State Revenue, with a Certificate of Recognition, acknowledging the State Revenue Office (SRO) for the support given to Toastmasters over the last 13 years. Staff at the SRO are able to use the Toastmaster program as training in their personal development plans. Paul accepted the award by acknowledging the benefits Jana Barnhill presenting Paul Broderick with a Certificate of Recognition that Toastmasters gave to staff. The meeting was also an opportunity to acknowledge Verena Engbarth and Vivien Ellard who were appointed Club Coaches for Five-O-Five last year and have worked with club members to bring the club back to Distinguished Club Status. The great benefit that came from Jana’s presentation was that three of the visitors have asked to join the club, a number of people made further enquiries about joining and Toastmaster members left feeling inspired to keep working towards their Toastmaster and personal goals of improved communication and leadership skills. Club Coaches – Making A Difference by Vivien Ellard and Verena Engbarth Verena Engbarth and Vivien Ellard were recognised by the International President of Toastmasters, Jana Barnhill, during her recent visit to Australia. The award marked their achievements as Club Coaches in assisting 505 Toastmasters Club achieve its Distinguished Club status for the first time in eleven years and increase its membership by 30%. Vivien said “This award is one example of the opportunities that Toastmasters offers to improve communication and leadership skills. Being able to articulate clearly and confidently in any work situation, to provide effective feedback and to expand my leadership skills are qualities that are highly valued in the business world. Oh yes, and it’s fun too.” Verena added: “More clubs should consider getting club coaches involved if their club is low on membership and needs some revival. A club coach comes from the outside to objectively assess what is working in a club and what areas could benefit from a targeted change and works with the club to achieve agreed goals. Being a club member makes you aware of the culture and the dynamics of a club – sometimes both need a bit of jazzing up and the club is revived!” Verena and Vivien are members of Business Talk Toastmasters Club.
