From the Editor’s desk...
They say when you’re on a good thing, stick to it!
This month we have articles from Margaret Addison (Glen
Waverley) and Murray Jorgensen (Curtin GSB club), who have
both been in Toastmasters for 28 years. See page 4 and page 8.
Inspiring stuff from people who have been there and done
that.
In news just in, we will be visited next year by International
President Jana Barnhill. She will be the special guest at our
District 2009 Convention in Harndorf, South Australia
(page 7).
We all know Toastmasters are good at talking. The article on
page 10 helps us with the equally important skill of listening.
Final preparations are now under way for a fabulous 2008
Convention at the York on Lilydale resort in Victoria.
Next month’s issue will bring you all the highlights and photos
of this occasion.
I hope you will be among the people enjoying this fun and
educational event.
See you at Convention!
Called to give evidence ...
What would you say by Angela Dodd
Toastmaster Angela Dodd from Tasmania was
called to give evidence before a Parliamentary
enquiry into services for people with disabilities.
This is her story.
I want to share an experience where I realised I coped
well as a result of my time with Toastmasters. I was
invited along to give evidence (I guess that’s what
you would call it), at a review by the Government
into the equipment scheme for disabled people
in Tasmania. I was invited and then sent along a
submission.
Angela knew she had just
once chance to get her
message across
They asked me questions and I can honestly say
they really listened to me. I was then asked for a
closing statement and I invited each of them to
come and live a day of my life. I went into detail, at
their request, but basically in the back of my mind
I knew I had to reach them on some level to make
sure they listened. Yes, I left thinking, I forgot to say
that, or I couldn’t think of an example to one of their
questions, but overall, it was fantastic experience.
If my submission doesn’t work in improving the
system, then no-one’s will.
I was very proud of myself! Something that doesn’t
happen too often.
I turned up and had no idea what to expect as I had
never been through anything like this before. I was
greeted by six politicians, and two of their offsiders,
I had to declare that I would tell the whole truth
and nothing but the truth, and then be recorded as
I made my statement regarding our experience in
this area. I sat there and thought ‘what do I say’
I started by giving a background on Tara and the
Toastmasters – My Experience by Margaret Addison DTM
In the mid 70’s the
Equal Opportunity
requirements opened
the membership
of Toastmasters to
women, although a
few clubs resisted this
for several years. My
club, Glen Waverley
Toastmasters, had
been formed at
about the same time.
When I joined in 1980 my first impression was of a
predominantly male, business suited and forty plus
age group. For several years I was one of only about
five female members, supporting them in their
enthusiastic pursuit of educational and leadership
challenges. Like many clubs today, the membership
gradually increased to be an approximately 50-50
balance.
In 1980, and for several years after, District 73
was still a Provisional District until it reached the
minimum number of clubs required. Soon after
joining I attended what I believe to be District 73’s
first Convention. It was held in a room of an eastern
suburban hotel, with possibly fifty attendees, who
lunched at various local fast food outlets. Over the
years I have enjoyed attending many Conventions
in Melbourne, country Victoria and interstate.
Glen Waverley hosted a Semi Annual Convention at
the Victoria Hotel in the early 1980s. The programme
included the first District final of the Evaluation
Contest. Several years ago Glen Waverley hosted an
Annual Convention at Box Hill.
Educational requirements have changed. In my
early days, the Communication and Leadership
Manual for attaining the Competent Toastmaster
(CTM) required the completion of fifteen speeches.
Advanced Toastmaster (ATM) was not divided into
Bronze, Silver and Gold, instead, three Advanced
manuals of five speeches and participation in
Speechcraft and/or Youth Leadership courses
were among the requirements. The attaining of
the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) had some
similarities to the present, but required also the
presentation of five speeches to non-Toastmasters
organisations. Work presentations could not be
included. Before the existence of the Leadership
stream and its educational rewards I know that
many long term members would have earned them
many times over.
Over the years I have enjoyed participating
in Speechcraft and Youth Leadership courses.
Speechcraft has ranged from empowering future
corporate executives, to giving confidence to the
unemployed for coping with job interviews. Youth
Leadership has involved many courses ranging from
catering to the highy competent students in elite
schools to those run by a Toastmasters psychologist
for difficult and underprivileged students.
Two unofficial Toastmaster activities which
regretfully have been deleted due to timing and
programming difficulties are the Dramatic Reading
Contest and the Toastmaster Olympics. Both of
these originated in clubs in the former Southern
Division. Both offered entertainment and challenges
of various kinds.
I am asked frequently “Why do you still go to
Toastmasters” In my twenty-eight years as a
Toastmaster I have been educated, entertained
and made many friends. My enjoyment continues
as I appreciate the contributions made now by our
younger members and those of various cultural
backgrounds.
I have chosen not to try to name the wonderful
and accomplished Toastmasters I have met over
the years because there are too many. I have great
memories of them and the many clubs I have
visited. My message to you is to keep on being a
Toastmaster – the benefits never cease.
Anyone for Tea by Michelle Monaghan ACS ALB
On Friday 14 March 2008, the charter members
and club sponsors and mentors all celebrated their
response “Yes please” when Tea House Toastmasters
enjoyed their charter dinner at a Melbourne
restaurant.
Tea House Toastmasters is proud to have as its
corporate sponsor the Australian Computer Society
What makes TOCC tick by Neil Spark
Life ticks away like a clock until you get to 40.
Then, they say, life begins. Advanced Toastmaster
club, Toast of the Country Club (TOCC), recently
celebrated its 40th meeting with a verbal blood
bath, also known as a debate.
it was such a great learning experience, it will be an
annual fixture in the life of TOCC.
The opposing sides passionately debated “that
dredging of Port Phillip Bay is beneficial to
Melbourne”.
Former District Governors Judith Talanoa and
Marlene Sinclair along with Past District Humorous
Speech contest champion Fred Hill were the
naysayers. Henk Van Den Bergen, Neil Spark and
George Randall were all for the dredge.
Fred, Judith and Marlene dazzled all with their
powerful arguments and excellent teamwork. Neil
Spark won the best speaker prize, a large chocolate
Easter bunny.
Debate evaluator Michael Broberg gave an
excellent assessment of the stoush and declared
the affirmative side the winners.
TOCC is an advanced club for Toastmasters with a
CC (or CTM).
Each meeting is full of energy, expertise and
enthusiasm.
If you are looking for something new and want to
learn from some of the highest calibre Toastmasters
in the District, contact either Fred Hill 9794 8508 or
Michael Broberg 9758 3455 to arrange a visit.
TOCC meets every third Thursday in the month at
the Mulgrave Country Club corner Wellington and
Jells Roads at 7.30 for 7.45pm. So if you are in Victoria,
come along and see what makes TOCC tick.
International President to visit in 2009
by District 73 Governor, Mike Helm DTM
We have just received the great news that next year’s International President of Toastmasters, Jana Barnhill DTM, will be visiting
District 73 on 21-24 May next year. This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the achievements of District 73 and to
benefit from Toastmasters knowledge and leadership from the top.
The date of next year’s convention has been changed to Friday 22 to Sunday 24 May to coincide with our President’s visit.
This has been done at the request of World Headquarters, and in consultation with Nick Nash, Governor of Central Division,
which will host next year’s District Convention.
Jana’s visit will follow the visit of this year’s President Chris Ford DTM to District 70 (New South Wales) last month and precede
the first Toastmasters International convention to be held outside North America, in Sydney in 2010.
Jana is an outstanding speaker and former high level speech contestant. She is also an inspiring leader and has made a great
contribution to the Toastmasters Board of Directors. District 73 leaders met Jana in Phoenix last August. She is warm and
personable with a good sense of humour. I am sure District 73 Toastmasters will find Jana an inspiring and engaging honoured
guest.
Jana’s theme for 2008-2009 is The Courage to Conquer. We will be hearing a lot more about Jana and her inspiring theme over
the coming year.
Plan ahead for this:
A Great Package by Murray Jorgensen DTM
It is hard to imagine what an isolated group the three
Toastmasters clubs in Perth were when I joined the
Banyandah Club in 1980. In the days before e-mail, when
fax messages were just superseding telex messages
(anyone remember them), and when interstate air travel
was quite expensive, only the Area winner of a speech
contest was ever likely to attend a District Convention in
Melbourne.
Nevertheless, things changed and, with barely half
a dozen clubs by 1987, WA Toastmasters attracted
members from all over Australia and New Zealand to
Perth for one of the last Downunder Conventions. And in 1993, the first nonmetropolitan
club in WA, Mine Host, organised what might have been one of
the most remote District Semi Annual Conventions ever, in the gold mining
city of Kalgoorlie. With only very small teams of enthusiastic volunteers, the
committees that organised these very successful conventions highlighted to
me the truth of a quotation attributed to Henry Ford – “Whether you believe
you can do a thing or not, you are right.”
My involvement with Toastmasters has continued because I noticed one
very important thing – positive thinking and inspiring ideas are nowhere as
common as they are at a Toastmasters meeting or event.
Not only do learning opportunities abound in Toastmasters, but recently I had
the fun of participating in a debate on the topic “Does Santa need an MBA”
and then the challenge of evaluating a project speech given by a Japanese
Toastmaster visiting my club.
Learning…fun…challenge… it is still a great package of opportunities with
Toastmasters.
Magic Maxims by David Reynolds DTM
Magic Maxims workshop supported by Lieutenant Governor Education
and Training Bernard Marmion and organised by Jacqui Gullick on Saturday
19 April 2008 was a spectacular success, attracting approximately 80 workshop
participants including six non-Toastmasters. The major educational
theme of the day was to improve your presentation skills with special guest
speaker Verity Robins presenting: Tap into your Passion, Know your Power and
Present with Purpose.
Other great presenters included Susan Morrison, Andrew Weatherhead,
George Randall, David Reynolds, Judy Murphy, Marlene Sinclair, Bill Farman
and again Marlene Sinclair with friends.
Jacqui is planning on conducting another Magic Maxims next year. So if you
are interested in:
• learning how to conduct successful workshops by gathering a team of
talented people around you; or
• contributing in some way as a presenter; or
• looking for a challenging role for your DTM High Performance Leadership
project –
Club Rebuilding Opportunities
by Damian Chong DTM, Lieutenant Governor Marketing
Attention Leaders and Clubs
with 12 or less members.
Every year there are a number of clubs in need
of rebuilding. They need some ideas, alternate
methods, better ways of doing things that may
attract new members and importantly keep them
for longer than six months.
Have a plan to cycle out! Some club leaders are
silent in their struggle, perhaps not knowing there
are alternate ways to inject spark back into the club.
However, some are adamant that nothing is wrong,
“…it is just a normal cycle.”. The answer to that is, “As
long as you have a plan to cycle back out.”
So, if your club qualifies, and the members have
agreed to give 2008-2009 a good go, to seek
more membership and increase the profile of
Toastmasters in your area, then please seek out a
couple of club coaches to help you. Inject an extra
kick of dynamics to your meetings. Work with the
different experiences. Preferably choose coaches
with different backgrounds to give alternate skills
and views.
How do you find coaches Attend Club Officer
Trainings; conventions; workshops; other club
meetings; or contact your Area Governor or District
Officers. They may be able to put a club coach in
touch with you.
Why volunteer as a club coach As you progress
through the Leadership path of the Toastmasters
programme, one of the options is to successfully
lead a struggling club back to Distinguished status.
Rebuilding opportunities are an important part
of developing new leaders in our District, and the
rewards are great.
What can I do now If you belong to a struggling
club, please have your members consider
appointing a coach(s) and if you would like to gain
your leadership award, consider a role as coach to
rebuild a club.
Empower by Listening by Graham Howes DTM
“The greatest motivational act one person can do for
another is to listen.” – Author unknown
Jill, a manager keen to improve her communication
skills, set a goal for listening. The goal was to “only
acknowledge people after they spoke”. She was
only to say more if asked a question.
Jill soon realised that she was not listening as well
as she thought, noting she was concentrating on
responses, judging, thinking about other things or
bored well before the speaker had finished speaking.
After Jill’s realisation, her focus on keeping a clear
and open mind improved... but it was not easy.
As time went by, her listening skills started to pay
dividends personally and for her team.
Jill shared that by truly listening, her relationships
improved and so too her energy levels. She
explained briefly and passed on a few tips:
Firstly – the relationships improved because
listening shows you care and builds self esteem.
This leads to trust and confidence which empowers
people to take responsibility. This leads to action
which greatly improves relationships.
Secondly – the energy levels improved as Jill was
empowering people. She realised that when people
speak, more often than not they are sharing and not
after solutions, so one can just listen and relax.
Truly listening involves:
• Not asking the speaker if it’s important
• Writing down what’s pressing to help clear your
mind
• Using friendly body language and facial
expressions.
• Not interrupting, consider taking notes however
ask permission
• Avoiding any interruptions and if not possible
inform your colleague
• Selecting a location where the discussion will
not be interrupted. This is a very powerful way of
indicating you intentions. Check if it is alright with
the other person
• Informing your colleague that they have your
attention
• Thanking the speaker for their time and the
information shared
If a response is required, consider:
• Permission to seek clarification or to ask
question(s)
• The language used: ideally use similar words and
phrases shared by your college, ask for clarification
as to whether your understandings are what was
meant
• Respond in a non judgmental manner
• Endeavour to allow your colleague to discover the
best outcome for themself
A few tips for a speaker:
• Assess the best method for all in conveying
your message: i.e. verbal, email or a note etc.
Remember you are after a specific outcome
• Ask the person when would be a good time talk
• What is the best time to approach / ask to speak to
someone, noting 5 minutes from lunch or home
time may inhibit your message being heard
• Be specific
• Be aware of the time
“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak;
courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”
Two contest dates were held, to give everyone the
opportunity to experience more of Eastern Division
clubs and their hospitality. Thanks to Eltham
Toastmasters for sponsoring the first contest at the
Eltham Bowling Club on 3 March. Due to the high
calibre of speakers, as you would expect at this
level, we were able to have a very enlightening and
evenly fought first contest.
It was a hot evening and to give the speakers
every chance we forfeited having the fans and air
conditioner running. They even stayed off when
our enthusiastic Division Governor decided to
teach us how to line dance while the Judges were
deliberating. Everyone enjoyed participating.
Strangio, also from Doncaster, won the Evaluation
Contest. Our heartfelt congratulations go to all
the contestants and we wish the very best for our
winners in the District contests.
Table Topics Contest Winner
Mary Voice
Again with the generosity of a Division Club, the
Satdy Arvo Communicators, we were able to have
successful Humorous and Table Topics Contests on
17 March. There was very engaging humour from
all contestants even in the Table Topics.
Shelley Arcus from Satdy Arvo won the Humorous
Contest with Mary Voice from Gourmet
Toastmasters as the winner of the Table Topics
Contest. We wish the very best results for our
winners in the District contests. Congratulations go
to all the contestants and volunteers.
Toastmasters will be saddened to hear of the passing of
our friend and respected member, George O’Brien from
South Coast Speakers Toastmasters Club.
George had been seriously ill for the past week and
passed away in the early hours on 12 April.
He was an inspiration in how he managed the effects
of a stroke suffered some years ago. He joined our
Club in 1996, and held most portfolios including being
President twice and was our Vice President Education
this year. It was George who “single handedly” made
the large wooden box for the Club’s paraphernalia.
As a speaker, George’s legal background was a useful
source of anecdotes, including the times when he
pedaled his bike in the Bendigo district to attend Courts
in Session. His knowledge of meeting procedure was
invaluable at Club level. He will be sadly missed also
for his very warm greeting when we walked into the
hotel prior to Toastmasters and his strength of character
during meetings.
To dear Pat and family we offer our sincerest sympathy
in the loss of a loving Husband, Father and mate. Our
thoughts are with you.
