NE]V. JOHN NEBLETT
of Vi-rginia and Tennessee
by
Edythe Rucker Whitley
Genealogist - Ilistorian
Nashvi-11e, Tenn.
Francis Neblett made his.will in Lunenburg County, Va.,
Aggust 27, 1777, and same was probatod June 11", 17f8."'We,
therefore, prove that Francis evidently took no part in the
Revol-utionary war. His wj-fe, Erizabettr, d.ied after 1/Bl but
there does not appear to have been any court necord perlalning
to her death. Her name appears as traving paid. a tax the rasttime
in 1 783.
The inventory of Franci.s Neblett i-s very long and uninteresting
with only one entry after another of various items showing
that he collected quite a mass of worldly good.s during his
1ife. This is recorded i-n Lunenburg county, wirr Book 3, page
9, dated Jury l, 1778. The appnai-sement is also noted. in lrre
sane book.
From the will of Fbancis Neblett as on record ln Lunenburg
county, virginiar wo gather his issue with notes as follows:
1. Sterling, born Qctober 2), 1753 in Albemarle
Parish; married twice: finst, Mary Chappell,
second, Betsy Coleman. He appears from the
reeords of Sussex County to have owned land
in that county and been a most prosperous
citizen. IIe has descendants scattered throughout
Southside Virginia. His son, Dr. Sterling
Neblett became a very prominent man in his day.
2. John born Al-bemarl-e Parish Septernber 10, 1TT5.
Iffis John is not to be confus6d. with another
John menti-oned in the Albemarle parj_sh Register
as son of Francis and Elizabeth. It is true
we do not find an entry to ttre death of ttre
first named Jotrn, but it is presumed that he
died and later they (Francis and Elizabetlr)
named anothen child born to them the same name.
Jotrn Neblett born September 10, 1755, became
a minister. I find that he Lived at various
places in Southside Virginia during his career
in that state. He manried Susannatr Hightower.
3. Elizabeth, born November 2J, 1T\6, marri_ed
gEmg-Orgain. Many of lheir'descend.ants
Tleis is probably a fact, &s f find an A11en
Rev. John Neblett 1les bunied in Montgomery County, Tenn.,
and tris tomb although standing, is in a very delapidated condltton.
It ls ln a barn lot c'R ttr€ feffi qwrred by Llrt* tr€:.I'rt eI
Mn. Andrew LyIe, located on the Palmyna road nine miles south
of Clarksville. Ttris tomb shows that he was born Sept. 10, 1755
and died Manctr 11, 1830. flrese dates check wlth the family
Blble of his son Edwand as to the death date and the binttr checks
f-ith that given in the Albomanl Panish Registen. Thenefore,
there can be no mistake in the correct tdentity of the man.
Thene is one other tomb standing ln this sacred plot of
gnound, that of Sarah Vance l{eblett bonn March 1p, 179O who was

twice marnied: finst to Asahel Brunson, Jr. and seeond to John
Neblett Jr.
John Neblettts will is in the records of Montgomery County.
There are many deeds pertaining to this man but after a careful
exarnination I find they are so little value I onitted them.
Permit me to make a remark here regarding the tomb of Rev.
John Neb1ett. Unless some step of preservation is made in the
near future, f fear that another ten years wil-l find no trace
of stone or grave. Wben f visited ttre place stock was alfowed
to run ln this lot and nothing there to protect the stones. 0n
rny first trip to this place I found a sheep leisurely using it
for a pillow upon whieh to rest its tired body in the shade of
a few smal1 trees, more commonly cal1ed bushes.
I did not find" the tomb of Susanna Neblett, tris wife, but
f did find that tkrere are several graves which have no tombs in
the small plot whictr in days gone by were enclosed by a sma11
roek fence about one and a half feet high. f arn confi-dent she
must be buried in this same p1ace.
From ttre will and various ottrer records we have the issue
of John and Susanna Neblett as foilows:
1 . Francis. Married a Miss Ferguson.
2. Sterl-ing. Married a Miss DaIy.
Mrs. Weaver has in trer possession some o1d papers and
d.ata showing mucb of the fanily tree of John and susannah. rt
is just an outline made by some member of the family without
any documentation. I think, howeven, i_t was made a number of
years ago duning the life of her father w. H. Neblett who died
ln 1909.
Rev. John Neblett having been a Minister i-n Vinginia is
poss'ib1y the reason wtry he is not found to have been a notable
soldler of the Revolution. The only record. of his having aided
in that conflict where the narne is spelled NEBLETT is whene he
PHILLIP PARCHME"NT VS JONATHON RAI\{SEY AND SAIiI'L CROCKET l8th
Ilonorable Judges Archibald Roan, Robert White and John Haywood.
Sometimes in the month of December 1803 Phillip Parchment of Giles
County j-n Tennessee exeeuted a bond to the defendant, Jonathon
Ramsey of the State of Kentucky for the pa;rment of two hundred
gallons of whlskey to be delivered at Cl-arksvi1le, or one. hundred
dollars in money. The bond was due and payable sometime in the
year 1805.
Sometime after the bond became due and before your orator
(Parchment) had made any pa;rment on it, one Samuel Crocket of
Robertson County in Tennessee (where your orator resided) came to
your orator and told him he trad purchased the bond from Ramsey
and had it in his possession. He proposed receiving salt from your
orator in pa;rment of said bond in lieu of whiskey & money.
(Parchnent) did detiver to Crocket salt and money in paynent of
said bond. He called on Crocket for a settl-ement and demanded the
bond be deli-vered to him. Under various pretences and execuses
evaded deliverinB the bond. In 1812 a suit was fil-ed in the courts
of Robertson County on said bond in the name of Jonathon Ramsey,
the original owner. fn the April Term 1815 i-n Robertson County
(Circuit Court) judgernent was obtained against Parclrment in the
amount of $1 30 which your orator could not glve evidence of having
paid. He asks the court to set aside the decision. They rul-e
THOMAS SIIUTE vs JACOB. HARDER & OTl{ERs--september Term 1B1B
Thomas Shute of the County of Rutherford, Planter, ... on or about
the sixth day of August 1 807 Jacob Gannison entered a tract of
land in the County of Di-ckson now Hr,rmphries in the entry book kept
by the surveyor3 General for the first fristrict on White Oak Creek
of Tennessee Rj-ver.;containing 5[0 acres and was numbened with
number 48..founded upon Waruant No. \1Zg and in entry land was
described as set fourth in the schedule..marked rtAtr.
On the fourteenth day next following that on which said entry was
made John Curtis entered in the same office two hundned acres of
rrCrr the former being tkre words of the entry and ttre later the
words of the grant to him expressing the boundaries of said 1and.
Your orator sheweth to your honor that as to the said two hundred
acres entered by said Curtis he the said Curtis afterwards obtained
his grant..dated on the same day set fourth and. expressed i-n
schedule it0tt and the saj-d Curtis after the grant had (been) issued
to him conveyed the said two hundred acres described in his grant
to Jacob Harder and his heirs and the said Garrison for valuable
consideration actually paid to hirn in money the said Garison bound
himself by bond executed and deLivered to the said Harder to eonvey
to hirn the six hundred and forty acres of land contained in entry
has possession of bond and ought to set fourth ttre same
Your orator in the name of one Robert Thompson entered three hundred
and forty acres of }and within the bounds of the six hundned and
forty acres surveyed for Jacob Garrison, except abor-rb four or five
acres which land so entered in the name of Thompson is described in
the entry as well as the date of the entry. . on Schedule marked rrErr .
Bill of Complaint and. upon a Caveat filed to prevent the said Harder
from obtaining a grant in ttre nailre of Jacob Garrison or in his own
name or in the name of some other person on the said entry made by
Garrison as he may cause the survey to be transfered..so that the
grant rnay(be) issued to them for. the purpose cf defrauding your
orator.r!. r It was finally decided. on said 'Caveal- that ..the entry
made in the name of Garrison was given preference in obtaining a
grant over the entry made in the name of Thompson...Costs to be
paid by Thornpson....Harder to procure a grant.......for the 540
Margery married to Beal Basley, Susanna married to John Harding,
Rachel manied to Christopher Stulnp r" Elizabeth married to John
Your orator showeth that Harder ought not in Justia obtain a grant
for the said 5[0 acres of land as tre is now at tiberty to do by
virtue and force of the judgrnent finally rendered on the Caveat
as he will be at llberty to se11 the l0nd to some purchaser not
havlng any notice of the facts set fprth and to bar the clairn of
the heirs of Asa Shute which your orator believes will be who11y
fruitless owing to his circumstances which in the opinion of your
onator renders him unable to pay the value of the land to the heirs.
Notwithstanding the just claim of youn orator and the other heirs
of Asa Shute, the said Harder is preparing to procure and cause the
grant for the land to j-ssue to hirn or to Garrison or some other
person for the above rnentioned purpose. . ..
