A resource is defined as an available supply that can be drawn on when needed or something
that can be used for support or help. A strategy is a plan of action resulting from strategy or
intended to accomplish a specific goal.
After taking into consideration those definitions, the importance of having a plan comes to mind.
A plan is needed in order to ensure that resources and strategies are aligned. The four key
elements of that plan are: (1) set your priorities, (2) live life, (3) check your attitude, and (4)
build a network to call upon.
Priorities: Priorities help a person determine what things
need to be accomplished first. It is important to
remember that priorities may require one to take a risk.
Even though they may cause you to take risks and
cause temporary setbacks, the rewards are second to
none.
Live Life: It is important to have a work/life balance.
This can be accomplished through communication and
making people aware of your plans. No one is promised
tomorrow. Take time out for you, and treat yourself to
luxuries. Do not wait for others, as it may never come. If
you are able to fulfill the things in your life that are most
important to you, then you have lived!
Evans, at evanslm04@yahoo.com.
We cannot spell UFSC without U.
Check Your Attitude: Your attitude can and will determine how successful you are at your
career. It can also change the outlook on any situation. Many young professionals look within an
organization for a role model. When a role model is not found, instead of getting discouraged, one
should change their attitude of looking for a role model and become the role model.
Build a Network: Never go at anything alone. Always make sure you have some kind of network
in place. A network will help you get into doors you otherwise might not be able to. Approximately
70% of all work is found through networking.
Lastly, remember to be nice to everyone – because it’s the right thing to do. Anyone you wish to
meet is generally 4 to 5 contacts away; and be careful about making hasty judgments on who can
help you.
STRICTLY BUSINESS
CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE
Featuring Dr. Jeff Brice, Jr.
Dr. Jeff Brice, Jr. brings to his responsibilities as Assistant Professor of
Management at TSU’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business a varied background
as a successful entrepreneur. He joined the JHJ faculty in the Fall of 2005 with
primary focus on teaching entrepreneurship. His previous academic experience
extends to his work as a consultant responsible for developing curriculum in the
area of entrepreneurial studies. Immediately prior to joining Texas Southern
University, Dr. Brice was an assistant professor at Hofstra University located in
Hempstead, New York. It was here that Dr. Brice single-handedly created and
taught a curriculum degree program in entrepreneurship that was recognized by
Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the top 50 regional programs in the country.
Dr. Brice's professional work history has been entirely entrepreneurial except for a short stint at General Motors in the
Finance Headquarters of the Engineering Division as a requirement during his M.B.A. studies. He has founded and
owned a diversity of firms ranging from film and television production/development to commercial (industrial)
construction to management consulting. Dr. Brice also has an extensive nonprofit development background and
established programs and organizations that target affordable housing, economic development, and entrepreneurial
training for at-risk and disadvantaged communities. Dr. Brice is an active member and reviewer for the Academy of
Management, Southern Management Association, and United States Association for Small Business Enterprises. He
is a lifetime member of the National Black MBA Association and is currently the National Alumni Affairs Director for
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
Jeff (as he prefers to be called) has settled on a teaching philosophy that seeks to incorporate a practical application
of realistic entrepreneurial concepts coupled with rigorous examination of critical thinking skills. Entrepreneurship is a
field that forces each participant to integrate the various business disciplines in unique ways to compete successfully
in the market economy. It is the integrative assimilation of dissimilar disciplines that makes the mastery of
entrepreneurship more difficult than the mastery of any other. However, this simulation is realistic since it is much
more problematic to develop a successful business independently than it is to accept traditional corporate
employment. It is Dr. Brice’s earnest belief that JHJ students deserve heightened challenges in order to compete with
their peers from other academic institutions and it is his mission to see that they receive an education that makes
them stand out from the crowd. This is accomplished through a “no-nonsense” holistic approach that not only serves
to instill theoretical and practical business techniques and methodology but also includes tough life lessons about such
topics as single parentage, early marriage, racial discrimination, and other issues that can interfere with the successful
initiation of a new venture. Of course, entrepreneurship is not just relevant for prospective entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurial skills are a must to prepare students to face the ever-changing marketplace whether they are
independent business owners or climbing the corporate ladder.
“The lifeblood of any academic institution is support from those who attended, learned, and became successful”, says
Jeff, “and entrepreneurship is one of the few ways that individuals can legally attain extraordinary wealth.” So, not
only is entrepreneurial training a good choice academically but it can also help to solidify the future of the university
through patronage, charitable contributions, and other support from well-heeled alumni. It is through this long-term
purpose that Dr. Brice hopes to make a difference at Texas Southern University.
Dr. Jeff Brice Jr. earned a Ph.D. in Management with concentrations in Business Strategy and Entrepreneurship from
the Mississippi State University College of Business and Industry. He holds an M.B.A. in finance and marketing from
Clark Atlanta University, and he completed his undergraduate work at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University).
JHJ HAPPENINGS
STRICTLY BUSINESS
The Texas Southern University Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), held
its Second Annual Awards Banquet on Wednesday, April 19, 2006. It was held to honor its members
who have excelled academically and within NABA for the past school year as well as to give thanks to
the members of the JHJ faculty and staff who have supported and assisted the organization throughout
the year. The theme for this year’s banquet was “Aligning Your Resources and Strategies to
Achieve Success.”
Ms. Hadassah Wagner, Senior Manager in the Financial Services Investment Management practice of
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), was the keynote speaker for the event. She has been with PwC for
over ten years, and when asked why she has been there so long, she replied that “besides the fact that I
never get bored and I am always learning, I am primarily there so that young junior professionals who
look like me will find hope and encouragement that this, too, is a place for them.
Adrella Owusu, Ms. Hadassah Wagner, &
Alexander Williams
In her presentation, Ms. Wagner stressed the importance of
having a plan, and provided four key elements of the plan:
(1) set your priorities, (2) live life, (3) check your attitude,
and (4) build a network to call upon. She also stated that
success is relative, and what one person may consider to be
successful may be completely different from someone else’s
measure of success. Additionally, she stated that it was
through her association with organizations such as NABA, that
she was exposed to the field of public accounting. (For more
on her presentation, refer to the Monthly Focus on Page 3.)
On Monday, April 10th, twenty-two students from Lamar
High School, the business magnet school, along with their
instructors Mr. Taron Jones, BCIS teacher and School of
Business alumnus, and Ms. Demetria Norris, English
Teacher, visited the Jesse H. Jones School of Business.
The students attended a college information session and
participated in Dr. Johnnie Williams’ Management 402
class. A luncheon for the students was sponsored by her
as well.
Dr. Jeff Brice, Management Professor, in a presentation to the students during the luncheon, gave
them these words of advice:
Don’t get too involved in relationships because they can take away your creativity and
hinder you. It is hard to be in a marriage when you’re starting a business, because you’re
married to your business and inevitably there will be conflicts.
Don’t just own a business…true entrepreneurship means having a business that can run
itself. You don’t have to work to make your business successful. Have enough skilled
people running your business for it to run itself.
If you own a business and you still have to work 60 to 90 hours per week, you have just
created a position for yourself and the time and money that you have put into creating the
business has been in vain.
NABA members Crystal Oatts, Juanita Foster, and Rachael Gordon received recognition for their
commitment to NABA this year, while faculty advisor, Dr. Ladelle M. Hyman and Ms. Carolyn J.
Hughes, Director of Recruitment and Retention received recognition supporting the organization’s
efforts. Special thanks also goes to Olu Adewoye, Candace Brown, Juanita Foster, Andre Harden,
Charkethia Hodge, and Ardrella Owusu, for making the event a success.
The National Association of Black Accountants is open to all business majors. For more information on
NABA membership or its activities, you may contact them at tsu_naba@yahoo.com.
Ms. Carolyn Hughes, Director of Recruitment & Retention,
facilitated a panel discussion entitled: “How to Thrive and
Survive in College.” Students Candace Brown, Shaneka
Dotson, Phillip Gmenogu, Whitney Jones, Viola King,
Travis Rolfe, Alexander Williams, and Jason Williams
discussed the first year experience, time management, how
to get along with your professors, business programs, and
scholarship opportunities.
costs and increase their sales to world wide distribution over the internet. John said “the excitement on her face
was priceless.” He later met with the owner of a rice farm and showed him how to better manage his crops, cut
overhead and gain 75% more productivity. John also agreed to help the farmer get stateside bids for the supplies
needed for an irrigation system.
Quincey Henderson met with a Belize fisherman who wants to buy more fishing boats. Quincey said that he plans
to team with the owner to gain financing for the boat purchases which is calculated to produce 4000-5000 pounds of
fish for sale to local markets. Quincey said he also met with the owner of a trucking firm who expressed the need
for a freight forwarding office and warehouse in Houston to serve as a mid-point between Miami, Florida and San
Diego, California.
While the students were arranging international business deals, Mr.
Davis met with key education officials to discuss establishing international
BBA and MBA student and faculty exchange programs and
partnerships. Educators that participated in the discussions were Ernest
Raymond, Project Director for the Ministry of Education for the Country of
Belize, Dr. Geraldo Flowers of the University of Belize; and Sheldon
Samuels, Minister for Employment Training for Belize City. Mr. Davis’
proposal for an international Student Exchange Program was warmly
received by the Belizean educators. Mr. Davis also met with select
business owners and agreed to help them identify trading partners in
Houston. As part of the JHJ Community Outreach Mr. Davis met with the
student chapter of the Belize City Rotary Club and their adult sponsors
and agreed to assist in their project to raise funds for young HIV
sufferers.
Due Date: Essays must be received by June 30, 2006
When asked for an evaluation of the Trade Mission, Mr. Davis said the overall assessment of the trade mission is
that it was highly successful and productive for the Houston and Belizean businesses and generated meaningful
contacts and agreements for Education, Tourism, Marketing, Real Estate and Agribusiness. A win-win outcome
was sought and achieved. Achievement summary: 1) A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be drafted
and sent by Dr. Flowers of the University of Belize as an agreed first step in creating the Student Exchange
programs; 2) Belizean and Houston business owners were able to meet and establish trade agreements and
partnerships; 3) The two JHJ students gave good advice to the business owners, and it helped establish
meaningful business relations with four Belizean firms. They have since received e-mails in follow up; and 4) the
newly elected mayoral team of Belize City received a major political boost by the invitation of Houston Mayor Bill
White to officially visit Houston. The Tri-County Black Chamber of Commerce will serve as the official manager
of the visit. In a word, said Mr. Davis, the Trade Mission was “Outstanding!”
