June 2009

Welcome
Dear Friends,
I was thoroughly lost. That’s not difficult to do in Dallas. Despite
having been provided with a road map by the car rental company,
it proved to be little more than a broad overview of the road system
of the Dallas Fort Worth area. The absence of road signs further
complicated matters. Everybody seemed to think that you would
know where you were going, but as a stranger in Dallas – I was
thoroughly lost. Fortunately, I found somebody at a gas station who
could give me some rudimentary directions.
You see, it’s important to know where you’re going, but without some direction –
without a roadmap of sorts - it’s easy to get lost.
That’s why, on the weekend of June 13 & 14, at all our regular services, we’re going
to share the direction we believe the Lord is taking us as a church. For the last four
years it’s been great to see the Lord guiding and moving us forward, but the growth
and development has most often been in various areas of our church life. What we’ve
been waiting for the Lord to provide is a plan that puts it all together.
So, now a roadmap of that plan will be unveiled. And we’ll have a chance to share
together, dream together, and - as is appropriate at the start of every journey - to pray
together about where the Lord will take us.
It’s not going to be an A-to-Z direct analysis of every available street, road, or culde-sac
- or even every turn in the road. But it is going to be a broad look at where we
sense God is moving us towards.
Back to Texas for a minute. The other complication that I find in places like Dallas
is that, when you do get someone to tell you where to go, it’s normally something like
“just keep going down this road, then you’ll hang a right – eventually you’ll come to a
junction and take a left, then you’ll end up where you’re going.”
It sounds simple, but in the country I come from, all that would normally encompass a
journey of only a few hundred yards. The idea that someone’s instruction to “keep going”
would really mean “go for 15 miles before you eventually locate that right turn” would
never cross my mind! Yet so often in the states that’s exactly what is meant. “Keep going”
may be a long way, but eventually you’re going to come to the right turn.
That – in many senses – is what we feel God is telling us to do. He’s giving us broad
directions, telling us to keep going, and assuring us of the fact that He will block our
progress when necessary and give us specific directions about “the right turn” and
“the left turn” when we need it.
We hope that in the plans that we’ll outline on June 13 &14, you’ll actually get the
idea of some of the direction that we are seeking to move in, and some of the implications
of it all. That’s why we’ll also be looking at the sort of structures that we’ll need
to adopt about how we “do church” - in other words, the kind of vehicle we’ll need to
be driving for the journey.
When the Lord took us through the 2,000-person attendance barrier, it was a significant
moment – and a time when we really had to begin to bring to fruition our plans
to “grow smaller,” even as we’re growing larger. But more on that on June 13 & 14! It’s
so exciting to now be able to share this together.
We recognize that, as a church, we are meant to move in obedience to the Lord and
His Word, seek His face, and long to get some perspective on where He’s taking us.
We trust that the journey will be still more exciting and fulfilling for every one of us.
The great thing is, God is with us. If He is not, then we travel alone - and what is
the point? If He is with us, and we hang on to Him and all that He will do in us and
through us, following His instruction, then we believe we will arrive where He always
intended for us to be.
My own conviction is that it will be a place where He is served, where His will is fulfilled,
where people are brought into His Kingdom, and where our world is touched and moved by
the fact that the living God would move through a little church in Western Connecticut.
Welcome to the journey.
God,” “Running out of Excuses,” “Manna
& More,” and “God’s Grumblers.”
At Sunday at 6:00, Pastor Brian Mowrey
will begin a 10-week series on the
N E W T O W A L N U T H I L L ?
If you’re new to Walnut Hill, or new to your faith, it’s pretty easy to get connected
to what’s going on. The following events are great places to start. You can sign
up for them any weekend at the Get Connected table in the Fellowship Mall.
Newcomers Lunch
There will be a Newcomers Lunch Sunday, June 7, from
1:00 to 2:00 p.m. (It’s always the first Sunday of the month).
Be our guests for lunch and come explore what Walnut Hill
is all about! Talk with some of the staff and church leaders,
and participate in a question and answer session. Childcare
(through age 6) is available.
Faith Seekers
This eight-session study group was created specifically for
those on the front end of their faith journey. Each session has
been designed to equip newer Christ-followers for their lifelong
journey of pursuing Jesus.
Getting Connected
A Life Being Transformed
Eric Frost. Danbury. Began Attending: April, 2009
Moving back to Connecticut after more than 11 years in
Texas was both exciting and challenging. For starters, going
back to my family was a blessing, yet I was feeling very awkward.
The reason was simple; I was leaving behind my soonto-be
divorced second wife, and
my 5-year-old son (from my first
marriage), Austin Paul, who lives
in Colorado. I was also without a
job, having lost it due to depression
that I’ve been battling my
whole life.
While still in Texas, I ended up in
the ICU after an attempt to take my
own life. I was in the worst pain of
my life for 48 hours straight. But God
works in mysterious ways, because
the next day I began to stabilize. I
asked the doctors, “Is it because
I’m pretty healthy?” “Nope,” they
said, “you were just lucky.”
Luck? I don’t think it was luck, but at that time I was not sure
what it was. I was about to find out.
After a three-week stay in a Behavior Health Center, I headed
back to Danbury. I got a job but ended up losing it by
doing the same thing I always did…self-sabotaging by calling
in sick, lying, and story-telling - not just to my employer, but to
family and friends.
So many “why” questions were running through my head:
“Why, God, do I have this disease of depression and hurt the
ones I love?” Sick to my stomach, bed-ridden and sick of everything,
I was a mess. My father noticed my condition and
drove me right to the hospital for a two-week stay.
When I was discharged, I had the best plan one could hope
for; a therapist, a life coach, prescriptions, and, believe it or not,
a “DivorceCare Group” – in a church, no less. On a Sunday
morning. At Walnut Hill.
This was the blessing I was looking for, but still did not know it.
Starting Line
Learn how to connect to the life and ministry of Walnut Hill.
Learn about our history, where we sense God leading us,
what we believe, practical ways you can connect and get
involved, and even how to join the family and become a
member! The next class takes place Sunday, June 21, 11:10
a.m. to 12:25 p.m. (It’s always the third Sunday of the month)
After the class, individuals desiring to become members will
be asked to read through a few church documents before
meeting with elders to share their testimony.
Full of sadness, confusion, loss, depression, failure and uncertainty,
I walked into the church. Three steps in the door, I felt a feeling
that I never will never, ever forget; and still do feel every time. It
was as if a weight was being lifted, a feeling of hope, a feeling
of trust, love and compassion. Looking back, it could have only
been one thing - the Holy Spirit.
I asked where Room D5 was, and made the trek across the
Fellowship Mall. As I did, I couldn’t help but notice that every
face was filled with joy and laughter. Somebody pinch me
quick! No way was I in a church, about to go and talk about
how I felt about another failed marriage.
(DivorceCare leaders) Sue Taylor
and Linda Burckart had the best
things to say about their church.
It didn’t take me long to see for
myself; the next week I met the
two of them and went to a worship
service. I felt so comfortable.
What a service it was too!
I was awakened to all the church
provides. I met (Connections Coordinator)
Becca Mowrey right after
the service, and felt as if she were a
long lost sister. She told me about the
“Newcomers Lunch,” so of course I
went, meeting even more people
that just started attending Walnut Hill.
The Walnut Hill family has opened their arms wide for me - and
this is where I started to go crazy. I’m getting up at 5:45 a.m.
on Tuesday mornings to attend Rise Up AM, and “Catching
Fire” with Adam DePasquale and Mike Bos. I’m a professional
chef, so I’ve volunteered my services to help out in the kitchen.
But it did not stop there; now I’m attending “Faith Seekers” every
Sunday at 9:30 a.m. After class, I worship at 11:10 a.m., and
then I get in my car and blast “Jars of Clay” on the way home.
Not done yet: I went to my first “refresh” and have continued
to go, when I can, to the 6:00 pm service. It rocks!
So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Just recently, I got a
part-time job, but I’m continuing to look, because a part-time
job can’t really make ends met. With the Holy Trinity by my
side, as well as all the great members of this church, nothing is
going to stop me from visiting my son again and becoming the
father I always knew I would be.
PRAYER
Adam DePasquale
Ministry Team Leader
Pastor of Prayer
adepasquale@walnuthillcc.org
796.7373 ext. 118
Being Transformed: Have you ever overheard someone say something like,
“God told me...” or “and then God said…” and wondered what in the world
they were talking about? Did an audible voice fill the room? Did angels come
with a personal message? Joking aside, there are moments in life when we
sense that God is trying to communicate directly to us. Whether it’s a Bible
verse that sticks out, a thought that just seems to have more weight to it, an
encouraging word or suggestion from someone, or perhaps a strange combination
of all these things and more, they are often the “voice” of the Creator of
the universe, who pursues us and desires to have a relationship with us.
God speaks to us for many reasons, but there are times when I begin to sense
that God wants to work on an area in my life. Usually, my awareness grows
over a period of time until I just can’t ignore it. It is at these times that our response
should be one of surrender. “Lord, I give this area to you. Help me.”
It’s during these moments that we become aware of the grace of God. He will
help. Be expectant and be willing to follow Him wherever and however He leads.
Prayer, or communicating with God, is
important to us at Walnut Hill. In fact, we
are committed to meeting with our Creator
continually - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We are constantly hearing amazing stories of
men and women going deeper with God,
being transformed, and seeing real answers
to prayer both in the lives of those they love
and those around the world.
Join us and help us pray 24/7 by signing up
for a weekly prayer slot. We are now running
24/7 both in the Prayer Room and “Wherever
You May Be.” Visit our website or the Prayer
Room to view open slots and sign up. We now
have 30-minute opportunities as well.
Come and join us anytime: Whether or
not you have a weekly prayer time, stop by
our Prayer Room anytime to find a few minutes
of quiet with the Lord or to intercede for
all that God is doing. (10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
by registered sign-up only.)
Pre-Service Prayer
Come gather with others in prayer before our
services. Gatherings take place on Saturdays
from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. in Room 24, Sundays
from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. in the Prayer Room, or
from 5:25 to 5:50 p.m. in Room 24 as we seek
the Lord and lift up all who will be attending
the services, and the ministry taking place
throughout the church.
Prayer Requests & Emails
Part of being a family is sharing with each other the areas of our lives that
need the Lord’s intervention. An equally important part of family is standing
with each other and being willing to pause to pray for the things on other’s
hearts and for those in our neighborhoods, communities, and world.
There are many ways to submit and pray for requests.
You can submit prayer requests by:
1. Emailing prayer@walnuthillcc.org
2. Visiting our website
3. Calling the church
Please let us know whether a request
is “Public” and can be shared in the
Prayer Room and with others via email/
web, or “Private” and should only be
shared with our staff and elders.
Praise God! Emotional, spiritual, and
physical healing is possible by the
love and power of Jesus Christ!
At Walnut Hill, we have four different
opportunities to join Prayer Servants
and our elders for personal prayer or
the requests of others you know.
After Services
Each week, after our services in the
front of the worship area you will
find trained Prayer Servants ready to
pray with you.
Sundays in the Prayer Room
Between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.,
members of the Prayer Team are stationed
in the Prayer Room to minister;
if you are in need, or if you desire
prayer for someone you love, please
stop in.
The Men’s Ministry seeks to provide men with
a place to discover significance, make connections,
provide care/be cared for and
serve. As I look back the past month, I give
thanks to God for the many ways that this has
happened.
In particular, our brother Paul DiMarco was
invited to teach for three days at Claudio Priolo’s
church near Toledo, Ohio (Claudio was
our former Pastor of Administration). Speaking
on the theme of suffering, Paul was able
to minister to many hurting people. The event
even drew the attention of the local FOX News
television station!
Our spring session of Rise Up and Men’s
Group is well underway but we are always
open for new men to join or simply check us
out. Please plan to attend out next Quarterly
Breakfast on June 6 for a great time of fellowship
and inspiration. The theme of this event
is to share how God’s grace can move men
into action through three very common situations
in men’s lives: health, marriage, work.
The invitation is open to all men and don’t forget
to invite your friends too.
NEW! 12-Steps with Christ Jesus
(Men Only)
Tuesdays, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Room D6
All men are invited to come and share and encourage
hope, fellowship and the power that God
gives when we seek Him to transform our lives.
Now’s the chance to get those grills fired up and enjoy the great outdoors.
Many of the women’s activities at church now have a break. But use that as
an opportunity to make the most of these warm days.
Come and bring your children and enjoy hanging out with other moms in the
playground at the back of the church. Picnic tables are provided for your dining
pleasure! Invite friends and neighbors round to your home for lunch. Explore the
countryside or venture down to the beach. Pick up the brochures from church
for the Summer Spectacular – your kids will love it! There’s much to do.
Never forget that God can speak just as clearly, often even clearer, through
your life as you relax with your friends and family as He can through the
activities here at church.
If you are available and would like to come here to the church for lunch on Tuesday, June 9, I would love
to invite you. As part of our Church in Action Days, we will have some of our missionaries with us, and the
Sampson children – who will be back from Nigeria with their parents Don & Kim – will be entertaining us with
their amazing musical abilities.
Come and get to know other women and let us hear some of the real life stories behind the faces we see
on the screen in the Connector area. This will also give you the opportunity to ask any questions of those
we support. We will be meeting 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. (PLEASE NOTE: there will be no childcare). Please let me
know if you can make it - Ruth
MOPS
MOPS stands for Mothers Of Preschoolers. This ministry provides
a time for moms with children from birth through K to
relax, renew, and refresh their spirits. We have two identical
MOPS groups... Group A meets on the 1st Tuesdays of each
month, September - May, while Group B meets on the 2nd
Tuesday. Registration forms for next year (September 2009
- May 2010) are available now. Please contact our MOPS
Coordinator, Sandi Miller, at smiller@walnuthillcc.org for more
information. Also, the MOPS leadership team has two openings
for the upcoming year.
We are in need of someone who can lead our Hospitality
Team and our Creative Activities team. If either of these
areas of service interests you, please contact Sandi for more
information!
Moms Chat & Swap Group
Moms Chat & Swap is a group for moms and toddlers. Come
relax, enjoy refreshments and chat with other moms while the
children play. This group will meet again in the fall.
Revive
Our Revive Team will be going into the Danbury Federal Correctional
Institution on Thursday, June 25. Please pray for this
continuing ministry as we have seen God working in exciting
ways with the women there these past few months.
2nd Sunday
If you are a married woman who attends Walnut Hill without
your spouse, here is a chance to meet with other women in
a similar situation for encouragement, support and prayer.
Meetings take place on the second Sunday of each month
at 9:30 a.m. Check the kiosk signs for the room assignment.
Oasis Women’s Evening Ministry
Although June marks the close of many of our women’s programs,
please note Oasis is starting a new session on June 2. Oasis
is Walnut Hill’s Tuesday night Women’s Bible Study. The summer
session features a study of the book “Dangerous Surrender: What
Happens When You Say Yes to God” by Kay Warren, wife of Rick
Warren. This study dares you to go deeper with God and His purposes
on earth. It will shake, challenge, and stretch you to become
more than you’ve ever imagined. Cost of the book is $18.
Registrations will be in the Fellowship Mall May 30/31 or you can
PraiseMoves
PraiseMoves is finishing up its eight-week session. This Christcentered
exercise class will take a break for the summer.
Please watch the August issue of Acts 29 for the new session,
which will begin in September.
Women 2 Women Mentoring Ministry
This is Walnut Hill’s mentoring ministry. We want to help women
share life through relationships – developing, encouraging
and serving one another within the body of Christ. Mentors
are more experienced Christian women who desire to be
godly role models and guides to other women, recognizing
that they are still on their own spiritual journey. Mentees are
women who seek a spiritual advisor/friend for a season of
time in their own spiritual/personal walk. For many younger
(and older!) women, family may be far away and life here
can be lonely. For details and how to get involved on either
side, pick up a brochure at the Get Connected table .
Mike Bos
Pastor of Care
mbos@walnuthillcc.org
796.7373 ext 171
Our government has been putting our
country’s largest banks through “stress
tests” to see if they can weather the
current economic downturn, or worse,
make it through an even bleaker future
should the economic condition worsen
further before it improves.
This economy is also putting another institution
under a “stress test.” It’s testing
the institution of marriage. As families
see their incomes reduced or eliminated
and are now having to tighten the belt to
make ends meet, the additional stress is
having one of two effects on marriages.
In too many marriages, the stress effect
is causing individuals to lay blame on
each other, belittle each other, demand
rights over each other and stress the
marriage bond to the breaking point.
But I also see other marriages viewing
the “stress test” as a power exercise
from above, strengthening the marriage
bond as the couples seek God’s provision
and His protective care through
these troubling times.
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we
eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What
shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after
all these things and your Heavenly
Father knows that you need them. But
seek first His kingdom and His righteousness
and all these things will be given to
you as well.” - Jesus (Matt 6:31-33)
How are you handling the “stress test”?
Hospital Visits
Mike Bos loves to visit and pray with any
member of the Walnut Hill family when
they are in the hospital. Please call the
church office, letting us know of your
situation, so Mike can come and offer
support and encouragement. When being
admitted, be sure to tell admissions
personnel that you are an attendee/
member of Walnut Hill AND when you
are asked if you would like a visit from
‘clergy,’ be sure to say YES. Because of
stricter privacy laws, you have to BOTH
identify Walnut Hill as your church and
say ‘YES’ to receiving a visit from clergy
before the hospital can release the fact
of your hospitalization.
Christian Counselor Referrals
If you are looking for a referral list of Christian
counselors in the greater Danbury area,
please contact the church office, or contact
the Care Ministry through Walnut Hill’s
website. The church office or Pastoral Care
Department can email you an electronic
referral list if you include your email address
with your request.
Two members of the Walnut Hill family – both cancer survivors – are “paying it forward.”
During their own time of need, in the midst of cancer treatments and surgeries, Jan Happel and Keith Sherrick were cared for by
members of Walnut Hill’s Care Partner ministry. Now, they’re getting ready to give that same love and encouragement to others.
“Both of them have been so touched by how they were cared for that they sought me out about becoming Care Partners
themselves,” said Pastor of Care Mike Bos.
The two are living out the verses Paul shares in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any
trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”
“All of my Care Partners are living examples of God’s caring for His children,” Mike said. “They are proof that God never wastes
pain. The sickness, the hurt or the grief that they have endured will be used by God to care for others like them, now entering a
similar place. They know their experience has been God’s training ground to allow them to present themselves as living proof
that God’s grace is always sufficient.”
Keith Sherrick received a dire diagnosis of stage 4 colorectal cancer in July 2007. But with that diagnosis came incredible support
from his wife Renee, his church family, neighbors, and Care Partner Peter Scalzo Jr.
Just two weeks later, Peter – a cancer survivor himself who had never met Keith – called and asked Keith if he could pray for
him. Soon after, the pair met every Friday, and Peter was instrumental in helping Keith talk and pray through the issues and
decisions that come with a cancer diagnosis.
“I can’t even express my love for the man for coming alongside me,” Keith said, adding they’re now “best friends” who study
the Bible together weekly.
A few weeks ago, Keith, whose cancer is in remission, realized he was
ready and excited to “pay it forward in terms of letting the Lord work
through me…I want to get out and encourage people to surrender their
lives to the Lord and say ‘See, look what the Lord did for me!’
“I want to help people understand that, yes, bad things do happen to
good people, but God can use that to mold and shape you and, in turn,
you can then help others. I want to encourage people not to turn their
back on God, and to give them the hope of God.”
Jan Happel also excitedly anticipates helping others as a Care Partner.
Jan, a retired nurse, was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in November
2007.
“I told Mike Bos that when I get through on the other side of this, I want
to help too,” Jan recalled. “It is more blessed to give than to receive, but
sometimes you have to receive first, before you can give.”
In Jan’s case, two women – Care Partners Betsy Gaier and Ronnie Halpin
(also survivors themselves) - gave Jan encouragement and support
through phone calls, prayer, and visits throughout her treatments. She
pointed out that sometimes Jesus shows His care for you in the form of
another human being coming alongside you during tough times.
“That’s why I’m here. I’d like to give back now,” she said.
Those who want to become part of this special ministry undergo six training
sessions with Mike, and learn about topics such as:
• Why God allows suffering, and how He uses it
• The grief process, and things that sometimes complicate it
• Dos and don’ts of hospital visits
If you’re interested in the care ministry, please contact Mike Bos.
Vicky Calver
Pastor of Evangelism
& Outreach
vcalver@walnuthillcc.org
796.7373 ext. 112
This is our third and final month this year where we focus on the Church in Action
theme of “Church Enablement.” In April and May we were reminded of
what it means for us to be a church focused on being the hands and feet of
Jesus in our community. This month we look much more at what it means to
stand with the Church around the world as it does the same.
We will hear from those serving in places as far afield as Georgia, Europe and
Papua New Guinea, Asia, or Pennsylvania, USA and Nigeria, Africa. My prayer
this month is that as we listen and learn from the Church around the world, we
will become excited and passionate about living for Jesus here and being
ministers of encouragement to God’s people wherever they are!
This month’s theme – Church Enablement
Part of our vision as a church is to ‘stand with the church around the world.’ But what does this mean?
In Scripture we read that churches in different nations stood with each other in various ways. They sent…
• LETTERS - The New Testament is full of these letters of encouragement to churches in different locations.
• MONEY – For example the Macedonian churches who gave themselves to God first and then their money (2 Cor 8:1-5).
• PEOPLE - The Early Church sent people at particular times to bring encouragement (Acts 11:22), with specific questions
and responses (Acts 15), or because of the prompting of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:1-3).
• PRAYER – Paul reminded the church in Philippi that they were partners together in the gospel, and, even though they may
not be based in the same location, they were connected through prayer (Phil 1:3-6).
And we get to do the same. Recently, when Vicky traveled to Rwanda and Burundi,
she brought with her greeting cards for our fellow brothers and sisters serving
churches there. We give to the Church around the world through our Church in
Action “Faith Promise” and Rehoboth Tithe money. We send people out to be an
encouragement – such as when we sent Clive & Ruth Calver and Bill & Kathie Beattie
to bless Vicki Beattie and others serving in Sudan this past fall. We also pray
regularly for the Church and individuals around the world.
As we stand with the Lord’s Church around the world, we also want to “Rejoice
with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Romans 12:15. So we asked
those coming to share in our Church in Action week our first weekend in June to
share what God is doing in the church where they are.
This is what we learned…
From Ryan Enns, Pennsylvania – “There has been renewed vision as Pastors in West
Chester, PA to come together to work, pray and talk about how we can reach our
surrounding community. I truly believe that God has given a renewed excitement
to partner in reaching the university, high schools and families, both affluent and
under-resourced, with the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
From the Sampson family, Nigeria, Africa – “The Holy Spirit is doing a great work in
Nigeria. He has established a strong and growing Church in the south over the last
100 years. The north of the country continues to be mostly unreached, but there are
Nigerians who have a heart for mission who are going to the areas where people
have not heard the gospel. A large, unreached group in Nigeria is the Fulani, a tribe
of nomadic cattle herders. Slowly, these people are coming to faith in Christ. The
Fulani Church is small, but the believers are dedicated and have a heart to reach
out to their own people.”
As we seek to be those who stand with the Church around the world, let’s be on the
look out for ways that we can be ministers of encouragement in practical ways.
During May, Vicky was in Rwanda and Burundi.
She met the ALARM team in Burundi
and had an opportunity to speak with a local
pastor and women’s leader. She also met a
police chaplain who went through the leadership
training for Christian police officers,
which Walnut Hill, through its giving, enabled
ALARM to provide. It was great to hear how
significant this training had been.
Vicky also spent time with Phil & Becca Smith
and the World Relief team in Rwanda. Walnut
Hill has partnered with World Relief over
the last five years and so Vicky met with the
team there to discuss next steps.
She joined in with a kids group learning about
how to care for people with malaria; she met
church members running community businesses
in order to send their children to school
or provide for the needs of people living with
HIV; she spoke with pastors about how they
are serving their community; and she had a
chance to minister to the World Relief team
through speaking at chapel and bringing
greetings from all of us at Walnut Hill.
She also had the privilege of meeting some
orphans and vulnerable children who are
now in school because of our Christmas 2008
“Little White Boxes” giving. Here is one story of
a life being changed because of our giving:
Priscilla comes from a really difficult family
situation. Her mom used to be a prostitute.
When she was born, Priscilla and her mom
lived with her mother’s brother who regularly
rejected Priscilla. The mom married in hope
of improving the situation, but now the stepfather
constantly reminds Priscilla that she
does not belong to him either.
Her mother’s hope is that her daughter will
find someone to comfort her after all the difficulties
she has faced in her 16 years of life.
And God is answering that prayer partly due
to a church thousands of miles away and a
pile of little white boxes!
Priscilla’s challenges have not ended but
she knows the support of her pastor, who
talks regularly with the family. She has the
encouragement from the World Relief staff
and she now goes to school, where she is in
the equivalent of 7th grade.
When asked what she wants to be, Priscilla
says, “I want to be a nun when I grow up.”
And the reason - “nuns love everybody.” Ignored
and unwanted by those closest to her,
this incredible young lady reminds us of what
real love is! And we get the blessing of being
part of the answer to her mother’s prayer!
I’ve recently jumped on to the “Faceboook”
bandwagon. I have friends! They have friends!
Their friends can be my friends! If you’re on it,
you know how it goes – information, comments
and nonsense (do we really care what everybody
is doing all the time? I submit we DON’T!)
– all get equal billing. However, it really is a cool
vehicle to communicate with people.
Recently, I’ve been seeing Walnut Hill postings
on Facebook! Just today, our Nursery
Coordinator Denise Loeber ‘Facebooked’ a
volunteer to see if she was available for this
weekend. Recruiting for Sunday School?! On
Facebook? Social networking has taken on a
whole new meaning!
Seriously, we in ministry do have to be really
creative when it comes to seeking volunteers.
Especially this time of year. Summer is coming.
Many of the wonderful, faithful folks who have
worked with our children for the entire school
year are taking the summer off. Yes, they will
return in September. But in the meantime, parents
- please consider volunteering with our
kids during the summer months. We are taking
off on a high-energy, series on super heroes
that includes fun tattoos and trading cards.
Sound like fun? You bet! And only so many
Vacation Bible School 2009
July 20-24, 9:00 a.m. to noon
G’day mates! Hop aboard the Boomerang
Express for a grand tour of the
Land Down Under – Australia, that is!
As kids ages 6-12 wind their way through
Australia, they’ll discover the vastness
of God’s love, and learn that no matter
where they go or what they do in
life - it all comes back to Jesus. Crafts,
snacks, live Bible stories, fun music and
lots of surprises are in store! The cost for
this fun-filled week is only $20 per child,
with a $50 family maximum. Registration is underway at Walnut Hill Online. Registration
will also take place in the Children’s Lobby June 14 and June 21.
With hundreds of kids on our campus for VBS WEEK, so many volunteers are
needed to make our program a success. That means, WE NEED YOU!
Opportunities abound - crafts, snacks, games, small group leading, Bible drama
and skits, music, nursery care and preschool teaching. Talk to anyone on
our Children’s Staff about how you can get plugged into VBS, and keep your
eye on the Weekly for back-to-school updates.
VBS Tour Guide Training
have been scheduled for EITHER Sunday, June 7 from 11:00 a.m. to noon
Special Forces Special Needs Ministry
The Special Forces Ministry has a two-fold design - to make sure that all children
have the opportunity to participate in Walnut Hill Kids and learn about
Jesus and to make sure that parents have the opportunity to attend a worship
service, knowing that their child is in loving hands. We have special classes for
elementary through high school during the 9:30 a.m. service. Children can
also attend regular classes with the help of a “Buddy.” Also, if you’d like your
child to attend Vacation Bible School, please let us know and we’ll set up a
Buddy for that week.
Our next parental support group meeting is June 7 at 11:10 a.m. (childcare
provided). Save July 12 on your calendar for the swim party at the home of
the Carpenters. Further details about this party in the July ACTS 29. Should you
have questions about our program or would like to receive our periodic emails,
please contact Sigrid Carpenter, 270.1560 or Melena Sorena, 775.7045.
ELEMENTARY UPDATE:
Beginning in June, we’ll be kicking off our Summer
Series, Super Heroes.
First to fifth graders can join us each week as we learn about
the superheroes of the Bible. Trading cards, tee shirts and
tattoos are the norm for this fun, high-energy, high-impact
teaching series. Each week, we’ll reveal a true hero from the
Bible: Elijah, Daniel, Esau, Esther, Gideon and David. Our mission
is to know that Jesus is THE ULITIMATE HERO who gave His
life for us all. Kids will learn that they can turn to their Bible as
THE source of POWER and that by trusting God, they can be
a superhero too!
We are always on the lookout for fun, committed adults and
teens that want to shepherd and teach our kids. If you want
to spend your summer making a difference in the life of a
child, contact Janice Anastasia, 796.7373, ext 114 or janastasia@walnuthillcc.org.
Training provided, tattoos are free!
Summer is almost here and at Walnut Hill that means that our
Youth Ministry gears up! Four teams will be going out on Project
Serve trips this summer: we return to Boston to serve a variety
of inner-city ministries; to the Bahamas to serve Haitian
refugees and in an AIDS camp; to New Hampshire to serve
families affected by special needs at Joni and Friends Family
Camps; and a group of middle school students will serve
for a week in Danbury through the Jericho Partnership. We
have consistently done these trips for more than a decade
now because of the incredible impact it has on our students.
Sure, they go to serve, but what they receive often sticks with
them for a lifetime. Students find that it is so exciting to see
the Church at work around the world, to learn and to serve
alongside believers in a different cultural context, and to be
stretched outside of their normal realm of comfort. All of the
students who have committed to go will be commissioned at
our 11:10 a.m. service on June 7.
Summer Youth Groups start on Tuesday, June 16 and Wednesday,
June 17. Middle School meets on Tuesdays and High
School meets on Wednesdays throughout the summer. Youth
Groups are a really great place for your kids to get connected.
The atmosphere is fun and laid back, so encourage your
teenagers to give it a try.
We have some SWEET events coming up that should not
be missed! On June 20, we’re going to be playing a massive
game of laser tag (details below) and we’re going to
Six Flags, New England on July 1 (details below). Bring your
friends, sign up, and be there!
Finally, Gene Sun and I want to say “thank you” to Tyler
Fitzgerald, a high school senior from Ridgefield High School,
for spending these last few weeks with us as a student intern –
it’s been a lot of fun and, of course, very educational.
W A L N U T H I L L
With the semester wrapping up, we’re preparing for Summer ’09—shifting
focus from the WestConn campus to our “in-house” students, both
local and returning. Last summer, we rallied each week at The Gathering
in the Upper Room for prayer, teaching, and worship. This summer
we’re changing venues to utilize our College Ministry house, aka The
White Street House, setting it up for weekly communion, small groups, and
plenty of barbeques. The FUN HAPPENS EACH WED OR THURS AT 8;:00 P.M.
(TO BE CONFIRMED) Our main worship service will be Sunday@6:00 each
Sunday, 6:00pm, at the church. If you’re looking to connect to other students,
this is an excellent place to do it!
Mid-June, we plan on having multiple small groups running at different
times and locations throughout the week. We have a ton of ideas and
some solid leaders, but we don’t know what you need! If you’re a college
student (or find yourself in the post-high school to mid-twenties age
bracket) we’d love to know more about you and get some ministry feedback.
Please take some time to fill out our survey available online at www.
walnuthillcc.org and at the Sunday at 6:00 service. By filling this out, we’ll
be able to contact you about our summer activities and get you involved
quickly. Look forward to hearing what you have to say!
Our summer kick-off will be on Thursday, June 4 at 8:00 p.m. at The White
Street House (235 White Street in Danbury). Come by to meet the crew,
see the house, and get connected for the summer!
worship; and summer will officially be ushered in. All good, all wonderful,
all reasons for joy!
Leadership Summit:
is Well Worth Attending
Deep discount. An employment edge.
Now those are exciting phrases in today’s
shaky economy! For a mere $75,
anyone in the Walnut Hill family who
wants to improve workplace savvy and
gain useful leadership skills can attend
the Leadership Summit, which is coming
to Walnut Hill August 6-7.
This discount is available only into July,
and you must sign up online via Walnut
Hill’s website using the host church discount
code TLS2009. Alternately, we’ll
be taking sign-ups in the Fellowship Mall
two weekends later this month.
This popular conference is broadcast live
from Willow Creek Community Church in
Illinois to 140 churches in North America.
The conference will run from 10:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. both days.
According to several who attended
the conference last year, the time and
money are well worth it.
Jim Anastasia, a men’s ministry leader,
prayer servant and former elder, has
been to dozens of leadership seminars
nationwide over the last 20 years.
“And I’ d have to say that, honestly, the
Leadership Summit ranked among the
very best in terms of having very easy and
Denise Shockley
Director
GIVING AT A GLANCE
practical applications you could put to
practice right away,” Jim said. “I think it’s a
must-do experience. Whether it’s your first
time or you’re a veteran like me, it is worth
the time and the effort.”
There’s something for everyone at the
Leadership Summit.
“A lot of people don’t consider themselves
to be leaders and may think ‘I’m
not a leader, that doesn’t apply to me’
but that’s a common misconception -
there’s a leader in all of us,” said Kent
Carpenter.
One take-away Kent received from the
Leadership Summit is to seek leadership
opportunities.
“The fundamental part is putting it into
practice, which I’ve just done by becoming
president of the local Habitat
for Humanity,” he said. “For me, the
leadership training is quite valuable for
assuming the responsibilities like this.”
The conference also instilled in him a
“can-do” attitude, and reminded him
help is always available in the form of
the Holy Spirit within him.
If we look to the numbers to speak for what is happening at Walnut Hill,
then April was a month with signs of God’s movement.
We began the first weekend of April with 2,251 people attending service
and study group classes. Our average weekend attendance including
Easter was 2,220. If you remove Easter (because it’s an unusually high
number) we averaged 2,061. Included in these figures is the 400 infant
through sixth graders that are in attendance each week! Although attendance
is the metrics for tracking, the excitement comes from the lives
that are being touched for His glory.
In addition to attendance, we saw a substantial increase to our average
weekly giving and a boost to our Operating Fund balance. Contributions
to the Operating Fund totaled $237,300, expenses were $224,600 for an
increase $12,700.
Although we are grateful for a strong month, we still have a year-to-date
deficit of $65,700. Our desire is to restore our fund balance to its beginning
number of $227,100 by June 30. To that end we are praying for God’s
direction.
Please remember that our membership convenes on June, 13 and 14 for
the Annual Meeting to approve the 2009-2010 Proposed Operating Budget.
If you are unfamiliar with our Operating Fund, it is a member-approved
budget that covers the following expenses; salaries, staff-related expenses,
ministry costs (Children, Youth, Life Groups, Family Life, etc.), office expense,
facility maintenance and utilities.
Thank you for your continued support of the ministries of Walnut Hill Community
Church. If you have any questions regarding this information
please contact me.
Sigrid Carpenter is involved in several
ministry areas at Walnut Hill and especially
enjoyed the motivation and feeling
of empowerment she got from two
speakers who, she noted, “started at
the ground level.”
“I don’t know if I changed anything specific
(in my life after attending the Summit)
but it did invigorate me,” she said.
“We can’t all be the CEO of Best Buy,
but we can all be motivated to continue
doing well what we already do, or
see something new and move into that.
It really is an excellent conference.”
Nelson Malwitz agreed.
“It helps you think through the mission of
your life and then gives you some tools
on how to proceed…it’s not ‘come and
be healed of your pain,’ it’s how you
might take your life to another level,”
Nelson said.
Clay Norman
Associate Pastor
cnorman@walnuthillcc.org
796.7373 ext. 116
Paul instructs the Colossians, “Mortify
therefore your members which
are upon the earth; fornication,
uncleanness, inordinate affection,
evil concupiscence, and covetousness,
which is idolatry.” (Colossians
3:5 KJV) There are some big words
in this verse! Our question will be,
“What on earth is ‘concupiscence’?”
One of the spirits that we face was described succinctly by
a philosopher, “Oh, don’t take lust away from me. Lusting
is fun. I’d never do anything, but it makes me feel so alive!”
Concupiscence is desire to acquire, to own, to indulge, to
take pleasure, to consume, or as it has been described, “desire
without a personal center.”
The problem with wanting things is they seem to combat
anxiety but in reality only create it. It is not possible to
provide enough money or things for those who love money
or things. The illusion that having perpetuates is that we
will be immortal. That simply is impossible.
My dad used to say, “You can’t love something that can’t
love you back.” The bumper sticker, “I just love to go shopping!”
is then just the expression of an illusion.
What concupiscence really is, then, is a distortion of love.
When higher forms of love are marginalized for lower forms,
or when love for truth is replaced with love for something
else, or when self-love or love of things replaces love for
people and our love for God grows cold, then true love has
been perverted.
Christ set the standard for us when He was asked what
the greatest commandment was. His reply - “Love the
Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and your
neighbor as yourself” - establishes the standard. We are
expected to put God first and all things second. When we
look at our neighbor and begin to want what he has, we
have left our first love and the spirit of lust has begun his
work in our lives.
Spirit of Lust
5 in a series of 10
It is important to realize that this is not just a problem for
those who have money. The amount of wealth someone possesses
is irrelevant with respect to one’s capacity for lusting
or concupiscence. It infects both the poor and the rich alike.
What the spirit of lust wants to do is distort what God has
given us as a blessing and benefit to be used by us for the
benefit of God and others. When we try to hold it for ourselves
we pervert its original intent.
What is not recognized and is disguised by the evil one is
the fact that what we desire for our own use will ultimately
control us. Rather than giving us a greater freedom we become
the servant to the very thing we desire.
God’s desire is that we should obey His will, that we should
obey His Word, and that we should worship His person just
as Christ did. When we handle our desires properly, we become
an object lesson for God to the angels, through our
submission, through our faith, and through our worship.
When we act appropriately we are saying that there is none
like God and beside Him there is none other—no things, or
objects, or persons.
One of the ironies of life is that the tighter we try to hold
something, the less satisfaction it provides and the harder
it is to hold on to. Grateful people overflow a little, especially
with thanksgiving and passed-on kindnesses. When
we self-indulge, we suppress gratitude. In saying that the
second commandant was to love your neighbor as yourself,
Christ was indirectly asserting that by keeping things for
ourselves we would loose satisfaction.
So how do we overcome the spirit of lust? “Our core problem,”
says St. Augustine, “is that the human heart, ignoring
God, turns in on itself, tries to lift itself, wants to please
itself, and ends up debasing itself.”
Our love—our desires—are to be toward God first and than
toward our fellow man. We do not seek to satisfy ourselves
first and then others second but rather satisfy the needs of
others and in doing so find ourselves strangely satisfied.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
in –
In the weeks since our last Acts 29, many activities supported our vision
to bring Praying, Living, Giving and Loving to life at Walnut Hill.
Praying
Keeping In Step with the Spirit
Our latest sermon series, “Keeping in Step with the Spirit,” further brought to light our need
to rely on the Holy Spirit and letting Him work in and through us.
Connecting with God
We continue to ramp up our overall reliance on prayer, and now have initiated “24/7 Focus,”
where those on the Prayer Team and in the Prayer Room pray specifically for requests from
our staff, elders and ministries.
Restorative Prayer ministry continues to see the Lord move in very significant ways; those prayer
servants are beginning advanced training to even better equip them for ministry.
AJ Picard has come on staff, 10 hours a week, as Interim Prayer Coordinator, working with Pastor
Adam DePasquale and other Prayer Ministry leaders to keep the busy ministry moving forward.
Living
New Life Continues to Bloom
As we went to print, there were 47 yellow vases in the vase in the Connector, signifying new
life in Christ since January! Each represents a person who has surrendered his or her life
to Christ.
Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus
During April, a slew of people from Walnut Hill took part in the Day of Action (April 25),
other Month of Action events, or served at the Jericho Easter Party for children.
A Church in Action monthly email was introduced, containing stories of what God is doing
here and around the world. We’ve also modified the Church in Action section of our website
to keep people greater informed on how their pledges are being used by the Lord.
Multicultural Ministry
A larger team, headed by Pastor Adam DePasquale, has been formed to continue the exploration
into launching a multi-cultural ministry here. An initial assessment is being reviewed
by the elder board.
Dying to Live
The buzz over Senior Pastor Clive Calver’s book “Dying to Live” is growing; over the last
weeks, he has given numerous interviews to radio stations across the country. Through Walnut
Hill alone, more than 2,200 books have been distributed.
Giving
Trusting God to Provide
Despite the dour economy, our church family continues to give sacrificially, allowing us to rebuild
our Operating Fund balance to a ‘safe’ level. We praise God that for the month of April, the operating
fund balance increased by $12,700 to $161,400.
Loving
High School Pastor Search
As we went to press, it had just become official that Ryan Ventura has accepted the position
of High School Pastor, ending a months-long search. More to come.
Worship and the Arts
The Worship & Arts Exploration Team heard from many people, and now is preparing to
make a recommendation on the way forward to Senior Pastor Clive Calver and the Management
Team.
Creed of Walnut Hill
Community Church
In Jesus we are called together,
in Jesus we are
being transformed, and in
Jesus we are changing our
world. We do this through:
Praying
without ceasing.
We seek intimate fellowship
with the triune God – listening
to His voice & His Word and
interacting with Him in the
everyday experiences of life.
Living in
the world.
We purpose to demonstrate,
in tangible ways, the hope
and love of Jesus to society
– in our homes, among our
neighbors, at work, within our
communities, and beyond.
Giving
ourselves away.
We resolve to give away our
time & talents, our possessions
& potential, sacrificing and
emptying ourselves to serve
Christ and His kingdom.
Loving one
another.
We commit to share life through
relationships – developing,
encouraging, and serving one
another within the body of
Christ wherever we find it.
In Jesus, Amen
F r o m t h e E l d e r s
A woman was traveling to the airport,
and began a conversation with her companion
about an article she read in the
newspaper - about a woman who had
been through a tough time. This woman’s
husband suffered heart failure and was
brought back to life, but the damage was
already done. His brain would not be the
same; he’d have to rely on someone’s care
for the rest of his life. He was the main
provider at home and she wasn’t able to
work because of her health problem. So,
you can imagine that her life had become
chaotic. Bills piled up, the house was being
neglected because of numerous visits
to hospitals. And so much more. Even
though she was moving through a storm
at that moment, she kept calm and she
kept her faith and, not for a moment, did
she have any doubt that the Lord was
with them at all times and that everything
would get better.
As the woman finished sharing the story
with her traveling companion, she admitted
that the woman’s story changed her.
“I tell you, I was mad at God and away from
any church and discouraged about Christian
life. I was in a sea of problems but after
knowing this woman’s troubles, mine
was nothing to compare,” she said. And
she decided to reconcile to God and find a
church where she could serve Him.
The driver of their vehicle then turned
to her, and, confirming her story, said, “I
know the woman (in the newspaper story)
well, and everything about her is true.
I’m one of their many friends, and I paid
several visits to the hospital to see her
husband since from the beginning.”
Whether we like it or not, people are
watching how we act, in the workplace,
in our neighborhood, by people on the
streets, at the mall, in traffic, by friends,
relatives, even strangers.
What type of story would we like people to
tell about us?
Are we making a difference in their lives
by the way we talk or express ourselves
or treat others around us? By the way
we walk through a storm? We don’t have
to be a theology graduate or become a
well-spoken preacher to bring someone
to Christ – or to bring Christ to someone
- we just have to let Him shine His love
through us and people will notice the difference.
Who knows, maybe today someone
will encounter true life in Christ because
of YOU!!!
Baptism Classes
Following Christ’s example, we encourage
that all who have surrendered their
lives to Jesus proclaim their faith through
public baptism. The next classes are
13 for baptisms on September
26/27. Sign up at the Get Connected
