Message From The Chair HWNT- Resolves to. . . .
Every New Year's Eve millions of Americans make New Year's resolutions. Whether
the resolution is to get out of debt, to spend more time with loved ones, or to lose
weight, these resolutions have one thing in common: they are goals to make our lives
better. HWNT will continue to set goals that are achievable and make a difference.
HWNT is goal-oriented for the service and benefit of others. Many organizations as
well as individuals set goals (RESOLUTIONS) as a yearly ritual and the reason many
resolutions are not achieved is due to the passive approach to the achievement of the goal.
HWNT Members are active in their pursuit of achieving set goals. The 2012 HWNT Annual Strategic
Report will demonstrate the accomplishments of the Identified Strategic Goals.
The 2013 HWNT year will continue to be impressive due to the modus operandi of every chapter.
HWNT has been identified as one of the Top 10 Latina Organizations by Latino Leaders magazine in
2009 due to the work that has been accomplished by HWNT Chair, Chapter Affiliates, and Members.
Let us celebrate our accomplishments and plan for the future. As an organization, HWNT will meet
January 18 and 19, 2013 to review roles and responsibilities, review the 2012 HWNT Annual Strategic
Report, and allow chapters the opportunity to plan collaboratively to achieve the identified 2013
HWNT Strategic Goals. I welcome the opportunity to serve as your chair for the next two years. As
the HWNT Chair—I have set three personal goals that are consistent with the duties of the HWNT
Chair.
HWNT Chair resolves to:
GOAL 1: Increase HWNT Membership to meet the purpose of the organization.
GOAL 2: Guide the review of the strategic plan with goal-oriented objectives.
GOAL 3: Enhance HWNT Membership communication via electronic and personal outreach on a
continuous basis.
The solution to failed New Year’s Resolutions/Goals is not to abandon the practice,
but to supplement it with a broader resolution—
a commitment to a goal-directed year.
Secretary
Maricela Martinez
THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP 2011-2012
JOINING HWNT IS A NUMBER ONE PRIORITY
There are several reasons for joining a professional organization. In some professions, it's a requirement for
licensing. Professional organizations offer benefits to their members, making it easier to do their jobs and
solving common problems for members. Most importantly, joining a professional organization instantly
associates you with the KEY people in the organization and adds to our credibility. There are four major
reasons people become involved in organizations: Reason #1: Prospective members desire to be involved.
Members look at organizations that have interesting activities. Activities that enhance personal knowledge
and provide opportunities to participate in service projects, volunteering, etc. Reason #2: Prospective Members want to meet
people. What types of social activities besides meetings does the organization offer. What activities will provide fun and learning
opportunities? Providing ten to fifteen minutes for people to network does not fulfill this need. Reason #3: Develop and enhance
leadership skills—organizations that provide intellectual stimulation and allow the prospective members the opportunity to explore
the possibility of developing their personal leadership abilities and the final reason, Reason #4: People join an organization because
they believe in the purpose of the organization. HWNT Chapters address all four of the major reasons members seek to join: HWNT
Chapters provide opportunities for social networking and social fun, HWNT Chapters provide for intellectual stimulation by the
speakers that are invited to the monthly meetings, HWNT Chapters are involved in service projects that enhance the communities in
which members reside, HWNT Chapters provide for leadership enhancement and encourage members to be actively involved, and
most importantly HWNT Purpose statement, “HWNT seeks to promote the advancement of Hispanic women in public corporate and
civic life through education, personal and professional development.” This statement speaks to the intellect, service, and
leadership. Why then are our membership numbers not higher, what will we do as chapters and members to increase our
membership numbers? Let us make it our priority to increase our membership numbers and chapters. Let us share with others the
benefits of Hispanic Women’s Network, recognized as one of the Top 10 Latina Organizations.
HWNT 2012 Annual Strategic Report
HWNT will discuss publishing an electronic version and limited hardback copies of HWNT-2012 Annual Report. The
difference between a for profit annual report and a nonprofit report is that the nonprofit report focuses on providing the
public, donors and contributors with information on how well the organization is meeting its mission rather than reporting
on how much profit it has made. The Hispanic Women’s Network is proud of what has been accomplished because of the
donor support and most importantly, HWNT Member support. An annual report provides written documentation of what has been
accomplished as a result of the strategic plan developed at the beginning of each calendar year. As HWNT seeks corporate funding
and chapters seek funding an annual report provides the prospective donor a picture of what has been accomplished.
