Member NEWS Member NEWS Frontier Specials November Specials November New Products New Products Closeouts Frontier Rooibos — Defining “Best” How about the finest flavored, fullest colored rooibos — purchased through a program that helps small-scale native farmers live better lives? That’s what’s behind our claim that our Organic Fair Trade Rooibos Tea (item #2828) is the best you can buy. Our rooibos is produced by a cooperative of 86 native South African farmers. During apartheid, these farmers were forced onto small plots of the most unproductive land in the region. Today, however, this marginal land is home to the world’s highest quality rooibos. As part of our Well Earth program, we donated $20,000 to revamp the co-op’s rooibos production and fermentation process. Key improvements include a mechanical crushing system, automated de-clumping equipment, and sanitation and food safety improvements — all firsts in the entire South African rooibos tea industry. Since the new techniques were implemented in January, waste has been reduced from 15% to less than 1% — a huge boon to the small farmers who depend on this red tea for their livelihoods. Furthermore, the project has resulted in extremely even fermentation of the rooibos, creating a finer flavor and even more dramatic red color. We’re proud of this very high quality rooibos — and where it comes from. Promoting Another Organic Holiday Season Simply Organic and Organic Valley are teaming up again — this time with Stonyfield Organic, too — to provide “Simple Ways to Celebrate Organic” this holiday season. In November and December, the three companies will be providing consumers with simple recipe ideas, entertaining tips and on-line coupons on their websites and Facebook pages. Irresistible new recipes — such as Smoked Salmon Dip and Spiced Maple Pecan Pumpkin Bread — were developed specifically for this joint promotion. Recipes feature Simply Organic holiday best sellers such as vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and mulling spice (all of which will be on promotion this season), along with Organic Valley dairy products and Stonyfield Organic yogurt. Simply Organic is establishing a special landing page on our website for consumers to access the promotion. It will offer visitors more than 35 different organic holiday recipes and the “Simple Ways to Celebrate Organic” Thanksgiving Meal Kit. The kit contains meal planners, recipes and helpful kitchen gadget ideas, along with invitations and games to keep the kids occupied on the big day. A similar kit, with holiday brunch recipes, will be available in December to help consumers celebrate the holidays organically. We make certain that botanicals that are sourced from the wild are sustainably harvested. When we became concerned about the over-harvesting of Indian sandalwood, we switched to Australian sandalwood, for example. State-of-the-art equipment helps us expand our quality testing capabilities. In 2010 this included a new stereoscope and digital camera (to capture high resolution images for botanical identification), an in-house microbiological lab, and a steam sterilization system. Member NEWS Frontier Awarded LEED Silver Certification Take a look at how we converted what was originally warehouse space into LEED Certified multi-use and communal areas in our new YouTube ® video. In 2010, we were awarded LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council for the renovation, which included the creation of a new entryway, meeting room, reception area, organic café, research and development kitchen, and office and employee lounge areas. The video shows these various areas in use and discusses the sustainability aspects of the renovation. New Frontier Fair Trade Bottled Spices Watch our video at youtube.com/frontiercoop In 2009, Frontier was the first supplier to carry Fair Trade Certified spices. (And as far as we know, we remain the only supplier in the United States carrying them today.) We recently added three new Fair Trade Certified organic spices to the Frontier Bottled line — whole cloves, ginger root powder, and cinnamon sticks. Our other Fair Trade Certified organic spices are whole black peppercorns, medium-grind black pepper, ground white pepper, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground nutmeg, and ground turmeric root. All of these items — as well as Fair Trade teas, herbs and baking ingredients — are also available in bulk. We’re committed to providing products that are ethically and sustainably sourced. We see these products as giving consumers the opportunity to support small growers and their communities with their purchases. Fair Trade allows growers around the world to be paid fairly for their labor, ensuring safe and humane working conditions as well as eliminating forced labor and child labor abuses. Along with the social benefits, Fair Trade farming practices are sustainable, leading to an overall healthier environment. The goals of Fair Trade fall directly in line with Frontier’s commitment to conducting business that is sustainable for people and the environment. We worked closely with Sri Lankan growers to help cultivate these Fair Trade Certified spices. We also recently donated $25,000 to support an organic training center in Sri Lanka for the Small Organic Farmers Association (SOFA), a 2,043-member cooperative of small-scale, organic farmers. Completed in late 2010, the center has already conducted more than a dozen training classes, educating more than 120 farmers on sustainable cropping techniques such as composting, erosion control, and natural pest management.
