<strong>Women</strong>’s resistances <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Third</strong> <strong>World</strong>—to authoritarianism, to <strong>the</strong><br />

hegemonic authority of First <strong>World</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> practices, plus <strong>the</strong>ir/our<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> political struggles at both macro <strong>and</strong> micro levels—are sometimes<br />

not seen. However, <strong>in</strong> this stimulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> timely volume, <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>volvements<br />

<strong>and</strong> resistances are explicitly placed at centre stage. The analysts who have<br />

contributed <strong>the</strong>ir chapters to this collection represent a broad range of<br />

geographical locations, historical periods <strong>and</strong> methodologies. The emphasis <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

book is to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to focus <strong>the</strong> activities that women <strong>in</strong>volve <strong>the</strong>mselves with—<strong>in</strong><br />

both <strong>the</strong> formal <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formal spheres—<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Third</strong> <strong>World</strong>. The common thread<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g through all of <strong>the</strong> chapters is that presently accepted notions of key issues<br />

—such as <strong>the</strong> state, war, fertility, mo<strong>the</strong>rhood <strong>and</strong> religious practices—must all be<br />

revised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light of this woman-centred approach. At <strong>the</strong> same time, this<br />

collection argues that women are not a universal category; but that it is necessary,<br />

as Haleh Afshar says <strong>in</strong> her Introduction, ‘to disaggregate women’s activities’. In<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r words, it is necessary to realise that not only do national boundaries create<br />

difference, but so also is difference manifest with<strong>in</strong> nation-states, whe<strong>the</strong>r along<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es of gender, religion, class community or relationship to <strong>the</strong> state. This<br />

edited collection thus provides a map for current discussions on what could, <strong>and</strong><br />

does, constitute women’s political activities.<br />

This collection of clearly argued chapters, all written specially for <strong>the</strong> book, thus<br />

creates an essential volume for all those graduate <strong>and</strong> undergraduate students,<br />

teachers <strong>and</strong> researchers whose <strong>in</strong>terests lie with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of women <strong>and</strong> politics<br />

—be it through <strong>Women</strong>’s Studies courses, Political Theory <strong>and</strong> Political Science<br />

courses, Sociology <strong>and</strong> History courses, or <strong>in</strong>deed, through <strong>Third</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Development Studies.<br />

All of <strong>the</strong> volumes <strong>in</strong> this series engage with <strong>the</strong>oretical debates <strong>and</strong> empirical<br />

analyses that imp<strong>in</strong>ge upon <strong>the</strong> study of women <strong>and</strong> politics. In so do<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

demonstrate that women’s contributions cannot simply be added <strong>in</strong> to politics,<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r, that politics is forced to transform itself through <strong>the</strong> contributions of<br />

women.<br />
