expansion of our infrastructure.
“During our 40th anniversary year (2006-07), we
opened our new Professional Academic Center as
45.6 percent, hail from Greene County.
While both counties have seen a steady increase in
full-timers, Greene County, in particular, has
increased at a greater rate.
“We’re excited to see these numbers,” said Watson,
“and are especially pleased with the performance
from Greene County.”
Pointing to reasons for the healthy enrollment figures,
Watson cited the college’s outreach efforts. He
alluded to recruitment on campus, in high schools
and at fairs as well as the institution’s advertising
program.
Watson also discussed student retention.
“We have a program in place that fosters student
2 • C-GCC • MINI SEMESTER 2007 SCHEDULE
Columbia-Greene automotive instructor Ken Palmer discusses
green diesel fuel during a session of the college’s 9th
Annual Automotive Instructor Institute this summer at
the Greenport campus.
Green Diesel is Topic at
C-GCC’s Auto Institute
With the frenzy over ever-rising gas prices,
hybrid cars and green-diesel issues were
among the topics at the 9th Annual Automotive
Instructor Institute held June 19 to 21 at the
Greenport campus.
Automotive instructor Ken Palmer led workshops
on both green diesel and bio diesel technology. The
institute provides advanced training for professional
automotive technicians.
New U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
requirements call for a major reduction in the sulfur
content of diesel fuels and emission levels from
diesel engine vehicles. To meet the EPA standards,
the petroleum industry is producing Ultra Low
Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel, a cleaner-burning diesel
fuel containing a maximum 15 parts-per-million
(ppm) sulfur.
As of June 1, 2006, 80 percent of the highway
diesel fuel produced or imported was required to be
ULSD, replacing most Low Sulfur Diesel fuel,
which contains a maximum of 500 ppm sulfur. By
December 1, 2010, all highway diesel fuel offered for
sale must be ULSD.
Used in combination with cleaner-burning diesel
engines, ULSD is expected to improve air quality by
significantly reducing emissions, according to the
group Clean Diesel Fuel Alliance.
Another workshop featured the new Toyota
Camry Hybrid, which was on display in C-GCC’s
automotive lab. The college’s automotive-technology
program includes an option that specializes in
Toyota vehicles.
For more information on automotive programs at
directed by Joseph Capone.
“On Golden Pond” is the love story of Ethel and
Norman Thayer, who return to their summer home
for the forty-forth year. The tale is a work of rare
simplicity and beauty.
The role of Ethel will be played by Chase Crosley,
who has performed on Broadway and with the
national tour of “The World of Susie Wong.”
Crosley’s work with classical repertory companies
includes Group 20 Players, the Antioch-Toledo
Shakespeare Festival, and Theatre-on-the-Green.
Chase appeared for thirteen years on numerous
television shows, such as “Young Doctor Malone,”
“Search for Tomorrow,” and “Guiding Light.”
Critics, such as those in the New York Daily News
and Variety have raved about Thompson and “On
Golden Pond.”
Admission is $10, $7 for students and senior citizens,
with tickets available at the college, Chatham
Bookstore and Greene County Council on the Arts,
Be a Notary Public
This class, endorsed by the American Society of
Notaries, prepares you to pass the New York State
Notary Exam and provides a comprehensive view of
the notary public office. A common misconception is
that merely passing the exam adequately prepares you
for life in the real world as a notary – it does not. This
class helps you to prepare both for the NYS exam and
to officiate in accordance with NYS laws. Confusing
laws, concepts, and procedures are explained in plain
English. Learn about the day-to-day issues you will
face in serving as a notary – avoiding conflicts of interest,
maintaining professional ethics, charging proper
fees, and when to defer to an attorney. Find out how to
handle special situations, minimize legal liability, and
much more. The instructor will also be available via fax
and e-mail for post-class support. The New York State
Exam schedule will be available in class. The cost of the
required course workbook is $12.00 and is payable to
the instructor in class.
Instructor: Nicholas A. Tulve, Jr. is a paralegal and former
litigation manager with a Fortune 500 Company, a
Introductory Therapeutic Healing for
People and Their Pets
Hands-on healing and channeling Reiki Energy (universal
life force energy) is used for healing and selfimprovement
and have been part of the world for centuries
with roots in Tibet and Nepal. Studies have
shown how hands-on healing can speed the healing
process, and is utilized to compliment medicine, as we
know it today. An amazingly simple technique to learn,
the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense,
but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class.
This ability is passed on during an “attunement” given
by a Reiki Master, which allows the student to tap into
an unlimited supply of “life force energy.” Topics
include the history of Reiki, healing basics and strategies
for using the newfound energy, hands-on healing
with humans and animals and receiving level one
attunements. Although spiritual in nature Reiki is not
religion based and is practiced by people of all faiths.
Plenty of class time is provided in practice, and students
will keep a journal. A reading list will be provided
to further your knowledge of the art. The class
includes a lunch hour (no caféteria services are available
on campus). Students may bring their own lunch or go
