About Us
The Ceramic Shop was started by ceramic artist and educator Mark Lueders.
As a teacher at The University of Pennsylvania, 1994-2005, Mark was a
driving force in the introduction of ceramics into the university's curriculum. As
enrollment grew, the classes thrived, and drew both new and returning
students alike. In 1999, combined with his interest in ceramics and design,
Mark invented the Hydro-Bat, the fast drying, durable bats used to make
removing work from the wheel more efficient. In 2001 the Hydro-Bat business
out grew its original location and moved to a larger facility in the Port
Richmond section of Philadelphia. Wanting not only a venue for distributing his
products, but to also fill the void for a much needed ceramic supply store in
the Philadelphia area, The Ceramic Shop was born. The Ceramic Shop has
over 8,000 items online with more being added daily. Most major ceramics
manufacturer’s products can be found online and in our 3500 sq. ft.
showroom.
We have a fantastic relationship with all the major kiln and equipment
manufacturers and are proud to say, our showroom has the largest display of
kilns and wheels on the East Coast. We take pride in our knowledge of the
products we sell and have been servicing our customers with kiln repair and
inspections since day one. We are a top reseller for Skutt, L&L, and Paragon
kilns not just because our prices are the best in the country, but because we
back up every sale with quality technical support.
Today The Ceramic Shop manufactures over 250 of its own products including
bats, glazes, stilts, posts, calipers, wax resists, chemical tables, and a variety
of hump and slump molds. This catalog highlights those products.
The Ceramic Shop believes that by providing high quality supplies and
promoting an innovative approach to art making, any artist, from the seasoned
professional to the weekend hobbyist can attain their goals. We thank you for
your support and look forward to the future.
Wax Resist Products
TM
Mr. Mark's Removable Wax Off Resist was
created for potters and decorative artists. It
is designed to be painted on like regular
wax, but can easily be peeled away. The
removal is simple and can be done in a short
period of time. This allows for endless
possibilities in design as well as layering.
Our Wax Off Resist dries in 5-10 minutes
depending on how thick you put it on. It dries
darker than it appears when wet (so you
know when it's ready). It can even be
applied to spots on your bisque ware that
have already been dipped in glaze.
’ No Drip
Wax On
Resist
Mr. Mark's No Drip Wax On Resist was
designed to do just that, NOT DRIP. A
special hardner sets the wax fast and
eliminates dripping and tacky surfaces.
This is an ideal wax for classrooms as you
will be getting more wax on the students’
work than on the tables. Wax On dries in a
fraction of the time your current wax does
and will not settle in the bottle. This wax
flows like no other and dries a dark purple
so you can easily see your waxed areas.
Mr. Mark’s Wacky Wax is a colored
wax resist that can be applied to
bisqueware or on top of glaze. When
fired, it leaves behind a unique glazed
surface. Now glazing and waxing
techniques are combined in one
bottle.
Glazes
- We take pride in the careful attention and creativity that has gone into formulating each individual glaze recipe. Our expert glaze technicians
have tested, tweaked and perfected our glazes continually over the years to account for the inevitable changes that occur in the chemical
compositions of mined materials. As a result, The Ceramic Shop glazes produce brilliant colors and unique effects with consistency.
The Ceramic Shop currently manufactures two Cone 6 glazes lines, as well as a Low-Fire series. The Pro Series Cone 6 Glazes were developed
to emulate the rustic and unique surface effects that result from gas firing techniques. The Casual Tints Cone 6 Series is a line of translucent
glazes that can be thought of as subtle celadons. Our 1Fire glazes (cone 06) can be applied to greenware or bisqueware and fired once. These
semi-translucent glazes are available in 15 bright colors.
The Ceramic Shop’s glazes are available in wet and dry formats and are suitable for dipping, spraying and brushing, although we recommend
adding brushing medium in some cases. Our glazes are lead-free, non-toxic and conform to ASTDM 4236 standards.
The Ceramic Shop’s glazes have been used in schools, community centers and private studios with success for over ten years.
Tips and pointers
We at The Ceramic Shop know that glazing
can be more challenging than actually
making your work. After years of using our
own glazes and helping many customers
trouble shoot, we have learned so much
about our glazes. Hopefully, the following
tips will help you achieve the results you are
looking for.
1
2
1 Crocus Red and Powder Blue work well
together. They interact to create a pale carmel
color provided your application is not to thick.
Crocus Red tends to be more red on darker
bodies. With a thick application, Powder Blue can
become a soft pale shade on white bodies.
On darker clay, as shown here, a thin application
results in a beautifully rich glaze. 1
2 Magic is an application sensitive glaze,
meaning depending on how thick you put it on you
can get very different results. Colors can range
from tan to orange to hazlenut. The plate shown
here has our Classic Clear dripped on top which
created a blue hue. Use this glaze on a piece with
texture and you will love it.
3 Electric Wood Ash has a quality you just can’t
find in standard glazes. Note here it is shown on
porcelain. This and our green ash look best on
porcelain bodies. Instead of a smooth eating
surface, try using a wooden texture rib in the
center of your forms to shake it up a bit. This plate
was sprayed and the back side left bare.
4 Jewelry is a favorite of many functional potters
because it is consistent and almost always glows
aqua blue. When applied thin or on porcelain you
will get transparent greens.
5 We love a glaze that gives you options. Tidal
Pool thin will show off in a darker green and as it
gets thicker it will brighten and go more blue.
Flecking can occur in this glaze, so consider using
it on a speckled body for nice results. Leave a
bunch of glaze in the bottom of your bowl and let it
pool. Try also dipping your rims twice to give your
piece that oozing over the edge look.
6 Golden Tan is a hardy matt glaze and loves
other glazes on top. Shown here with a cobalt and
iron wash and our Cranberry glaze trailed on.
7 Astral Blue looks good on almost everything.
The actual shade of blue can change according to
your clay body, shown here on a bright white
stoneware. Try spraying glaze through a hand
held atomizer for a unique and surprisingly even
coat.
8 This slab built bowl was pressed over our 16”
hump mold. Try combining slab techniques and
the wheel for new form ideas. Two coats of Green
Patina hid most of the texture work on this form,
but applied thinner and this glaze goes black. This
and Black Orbit are our favorites for sculptural
objects. Both are very dry matte glazes and not
suited for everyday functional wares. Try glazing
the outside with these and lining your work with a
high glass content glaze like our Casual Tint
Series.
GLAZES 5

Low Fire Glaze Series, cone 06
Our line of low fire glazes are ideal for the busy
classroom, production potter and large scale
projects. They perform best when dipped however
these glazes come out great painted, glaze trailed or
even sprayed. But what makes them really unique is
how good they look when applied to un-fired clay and
slowly fired once. Shown below is a large scale mural
project completed for Philadelphia’s Public Transportaion
Authority, SEPTA. Permanently installed at 65th
and Market St. Over 2000 handmade tiles were
created based on Artist, Ed Hughes’ winning design.
Cost and time restraints forced The Ceramic Shop’s
low fire glazes to be applied to the bone dry work and
once fired. Our Real Clear was used over Amaco’s
Velvet Underglazes with beautiful results. The glazes
layer nicely over each other and are available in the
classic colors everyone needs. So if you are doing a
large scale project or maybe a school mural our 1Fire
glazes will be a smart choice and save you a bundle,
when buying in gallon sizes or in dry quantities.
Re-Wedge Wedging Table & Recycle Slabs
This product was designed for the Conestoga High School Ceramics
program. It needed to be heavy duty and handle volumes of wedging and
act as a recycling slab. A Hydro-Stone / Plaster blend is cast into a steel
frame, assuring a long lasting smooth surface. The top surface of the
wedging table frame is made of a steel mesh material that will allow the
water to wick out of the slab faster and without the chance of mold
developing. Standard frame color is grey. The slab can be sold separately.
If used for wedging, the table must be installed up against a sturdy wall
and is not meant for the middle of the room.
