I received my PhD in economics at the Department of Economics, Göteborg
University in January, 1982.
From the fall of 1982 to the fall of 1983 I was visiting professor at the University of
California at Berkeley.
In 1982 I was appointed assistant professor (forskarassistent) at the Department of
Economics, Göteborg University.
From September 1985 to March 1989 I was employed at FIEF, the Trade Union
Institute for Economic Research, Stockholm.
Starting March 1989 I was employed at IUI, the Research Institute for Industrial
Economics, Stockholm.
In May 1987 I was appointed associate professor (oavlönad docent) at the Department
of Economics, Göteborg University.
During the summer of 1988 I was visiting lecturer at Michigan State University, USA.

In1996 I was again employed at FIEF.
In August 2000 I was appointed Professor (adj) of economics at the School of
Economics and Commercial Law at Göteborg University.
In March 2004 I became the deputy director of FIEF.
In January 2006 I was employed at the Swedish Institute for Social Research,
Stockholm University.
Since May 2010 I hold a chair as professor in International Migration and Ethnic
Relations, at the Swedish Institute for Social Research, Stockholm University.
Awards
In 1983 I received the Erik Lindahl Prize to "a promising young Swedish researcher
in economics" for my thesis (B2).
In January 1999 I received the Gunnar Myrdal Prize for the best article
(”Avreglering och arbetskraftsinvandring i ett utvidgat EU”, (E34)) in Ekonomisk
debatt during 1998.
