Where have
the Summer
and early Fall
months gone?
Poof! Do you
find the days
just flying by? I
do – but being
busy doing
what I want to
do is quite
different from
doing what I
have had to do
in the past. I
enjoyed my
teaching and
administrative experiences but have
moved into a new positive lifestyle. It is
great to be able to “smell the roses” again.
What a delight it was to see almost 100
of you at our “Hell With The Bell”
breakfast at Dominion Golf Club on
September 8 th . This was a great way to
welcome new retirees to RTO/ERO. Good
food and good fellowship will do it every
time. The free mugs helped too.
The Fall Senate in Toronto will be held
in the last week of October. Six members
of the Executive will be attending. We
hope to have some good news to share
after Provincial Executive elections are
over. Two members of District 7, Jim
Sparrow
(Political Action) and Norm Renaud
(Project Service to Others) are on
provincial Committees. Margaret Clarke
has just relinquished the Chair of the
Member Services Committee at the
provincial level as well. These three
people in particular are very active at
both the Local and the Provincial levels.
Their experience and expertise are very
much appreciated by our Local Executive.
Our Fall Luncheon on November 19 th
promises to be a very interesting gettogether.
We hope to have a presentation
from a group who received a Grant from
this District. Did we ever get value for our
money! Come to the luncheon and see
how imagination, ingenuity and a talented
RTO/ERO member’s husband turned
$500.00 into a priceless project.
The Crafters are back! These artistic and
very busy RTO/ERO members will be
setting up their tables, and will be open
for business before and after lunch. Ken
Friesen (pottery) and Sue Rumball
(jewellery) along with Bev McKay
(quilting goods…) and Mary Lou
Nowitsky (glass/crystal jewellery) have
committed to our luncheon. There is still
room for more crafters. Just look up the
application form in the Summer issue of
the newsletter and send it on to me.
We will be collecting canned goods at the
luncheon as well. There are a number
RTO/ERO members who volunteer at the
University of Windsor with associations who
help out students who run into difficulties. A
Food Bank has been established on campus and
students (and their families in some cases) can
draw on these supplies when needed. Please
bring a non-perishable item that you think a
university student would appreciate to tide
them over in leaner times. The Executive has
also decided that the proceeds from the sale of
the centerpieces will go to the Downtown
Mission.
Last words …District 7 has Grant money
($1500.00) to give away to deserving groups for
projects they initiate. Check the Newsletter for
the appropriate Grant request form.
The Provincial RTO/ERO Project Service To
Others Committee can grant up to $4000.00
for individual group requests as well. These
requests come to the local District Executive,
and then are passed on to the Provincial
Executive. Access the RTO/ERO website
Golf Tournament
Our annual golf tournament took place on September 27 th . Amid the gale winds and rain, 23 avid golfers
trudged through the Dominion Golf Course for the very challenging 9 holes of golf. Kudos to those who
faced the elements and were successful in their attempts despite the terrible weather conditions. Many
thanks for hanging in there everyone.
Email Communication at District 7
An increasing number of members access the District 7 newsletter online!
About 140 of our members now access the newsletter online. That is, when the three
newsletters of the year are published, these 140 members receive an email from the
webmaster, informing them that they can now access the newsletter on our website
http://www.rtoero-district7.org.
At District 7 we want to give you timely information via emails to your mailbox.
Our new communication emails were announced in our summer newsletter. In case you
may need a refresher about these emails, the purpose of these emails is to send out timely
information to our members about District 7 activities between the three (spring, summer
and fall) newsletters. Such information may include travel opportunities, RTO-ERO
senate resolutions, or health information. Those members already accessing the
newsletters online will automatically be receiving the communication emails, since we
already have their email address. Any questions or concerns with this protocol - please
feel free to contact me by email or phone (519-733-3266).
Would you like to be added to our email list?
Just send your webmaster Ann Cotter an email! In the subject line, please put “Email
List”. Send your email to ann_cotter@teksavvy.com . When your email address is
added to the email list, that means that you will be receiving both the newsletter email
notifications and the communication emails.
UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN 2009
“Together, we’re changing lives.”
Retirees in Essex County have a strong tradition of supporting the community. Thanks to the generosity of the
members of RTOERO District 7, $23,000 was raised towards local programs and services through United
Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County. Your United Way contribution has a direct and lasting impact on the
lives of people right here in Windsor and Essex County.
I wanted to share this inspiring story about your donation at work:
Carlos, a 6 year old child from Windsor-Essex County recently took part in the ABC Literacy Project through his
After-School Program. Carlos’ reading improved and his confidence level soared. At United Way’s 2009 Annual
General Meeting, Carlos stood fearlessly in front of a room of over 200 people and read a passage from a book. He
read with confidence and poise, and when he finished the reading, the crowd jumped to their feet and cheered.
Carlos’ life has been changed. We know that children who read well will be more successful in school. We know that
children with confidence will work well with others and exhibit positive self-esteem. We know that because of the ABC
Literacy Project, Carlos has the skills to thrive in school, both academically and socially.
That’s an excellent example of why the United Way and other partners designed the ABC Literacy Project in 2007.
The project helped Carlos and many other children from Windsor and Essex County. What made this and other lifechanging
programs and funding possible? The generosity of people like you, retirees who – together – donated over
$200,000 to United Way last year.
United Way is dedicated to helping individuals, everyday in their community.
Do you have a question about social, health, government or community services?
If so, 211 Windsor-Essex is here to serve you. 211 is a shared commitment of United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex,
City of Windsor and County of Essex. By dialing 211 or visiting www.211windsoressex.ca, you can learn more about
the social and community services available to you.
Your dedicated support helps to improve reading levels of our children. It provides venues where the unemployed can
learn and grow. It ensures that senior citizens have a place where they can socialize and stay active. Your
commitment to United Way means that people in our community – friends, neighbours, family and even strangers –
will continue to be supported.
Thousands of people in our community need help, and the number is growing. Your donation to United Way, big or
small, will help us write more success stories.
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we’re changing lives.
Sincerely,
SEASONAL and H1N1 FLU SHOT PROGRAMS
A Three Phase Approach in Ontario
First seniors 65 years and older are to be
vaccinated against the seasonal flu in October. In
phase two the H1N1 vaccine will follow in early
November. In phase three the seasonal flu vaccine
will be for Ontarians six months of age and older.
Over 65 and under 65 Years Old
People 65 years or older are generally less likely
to become infected with the H1N1 flu virus.
People under 65 years old will be offered the
seasonal flu shot in December and January.
Symptoms of H1N1
Typical symptoms can include fever, cough, sore
throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
Like seasonal flu, the H1N1 flu may cause a
worsening of underlying chronic medical
conditions.
Age Seems to Matter
H1N1 flu appears to affect younger people more
than the seasonal flu. People born before 1957
appear to have some degree of immunity to the
virus.
Vaccines
Vaccines are the most powerful public health tool
for the prevention of influenza. The H1N1 flu
vaccine will be ready in late fall. The Government
of Canada has placed an order for more than 50
million doses.
Ontario will be getting enough vaccine to
immunize 75 per cent of our total population with
two doses per person,
Can I get Flu from a Flu Vaccine?
The flu vaccine was specially designed to make
it impossible to transmit influenza from an
influenza vaccine. In those cases where people feel
that they have contracted the flu from the vaccine,
it almost always turns out that they are
experiencing another illness.
Southern and Northern Hemispheres
Most countries in the southern hemisphere have
experienced increased numbers of cases, but that
is because they are experiencing their winter
influenza season. Ontario is keeping a close watch
on countries in the southern hemisphere. Scientists
believe there is a strong likelihood that our
experience with the H1N1 flu this coming winter
Australia.
Is It Safe to Eat Pork?
While it is a variant of swine flu, the H1N1 flu
virus is not transmitted through pork or any other
food. Influenza and other respiratory viruses are
transmitted from person to person when they
enter the nose or throat because of sneezes and
coughs. Viruses also can be picked up from
commonly touched surfaces and objects and then
transmitted through the respiratory tract when
people touch their mouths or noses.
Seasonal Flu Shot Protection
The regular seasonal flu shot will not offer
protection against the H1N1 flu. The overall
picture is one of declining transmission in the
temperate regions of the southern hemisphere.
Australia is now starting to report decreases in the
number of cases, as well as in the number of
people seeking care. The virus is still circulating
and continuing to move into areas not affected
earlier, but the overall national trends are
downward. The WHO has advised that although
the impact and severity of the season in the
southern hemisphere are still being evaluated, it
appears to have been slightly worse than a regular
influenza season.
All in all, the H1N1 flu remains one of moderate
severity. The overwhelming majority of patients
worldwidecontinue to experience mild symptoms.
Most recover within a week. The H1N1 flu virus
remains unchanged. The fact that the illness is
affecting mostly younger age groups and that
certain groups with underlying conditions appear
to be at increased risk of complications and death
remains a concern. But overall, jurisdictions
everywhere are coping well.
