Letter from the President
Something Old,
Something New
Academics at CCU
Dr. Tom Thatcher
Chief Academic Officer
tom.thatcher@CCUniversity.edu
Dr. David Faust
President@CCUniversity.edu
Cincinnati Christian University is in the midst of a dynamic period of change and growth. Reflecting
the long-time vision of President Faust, CCU’s new strategic plan calls for a significant expansion
of the scope and appeal of the university’s academic offerings, with a view to attracting more
students who seek a distinctly Christian educational experience. At the same time, the Bible remains
CCU’s chief textbook, and every course and degree program seeks to develop Christian leaders with
a sound biblical worldview and a mature relationship with Christ.
In sports they call momentum the “Big Mo”—
the inner drive to succeed that pushes a team
forward with increasing energy. Marathon
runners find it easier to keep going when they
hit their stride. Businesses and schools thrive
as momentum builds.
In his popular book Good to Great, Jim Collins
compares momentum to pushing a flywheel.
He writes:
“
pushing the flywheel
With persistent pushing in
a consistent direction over
a long period of time, the
flywheel builds momentum,
eventually hitting a point
of breakthrough.
Most of life’s worthwhile achievements,
including earning a college degree, come after
pushing the flywheel for a long time.
A lot of people have kept CCU moving forward
over the last 89 years, with plenty of victories
to celebrate along the way. A professor
smiles as she reads a final exam, realizing
that her student truly grasps the lesson.
Graduates receive their diplomas after years
of determined effort. A coach feels a sense of
satisfaction because the student-athlete he’s
mentoring has grown into a wise young man
as well as a talented player. A donor sees CCU
moving forward and feels the joy that comes
from helping to build God’s kingdom.
“
There are many indications of
positive momentum here at CCU.
• The Stepping Up Campaign initiated
last winter has yielded nearly half
a million dollars in extra financial
support.
• We have restructured our academic
programs—protecting our biblical
core, strengthening our professional
programs, expanding our mission, and
positioning the school for growth.
• We have solidified CCU’s financial
future through a 20-year refinancing
agreement with Central Bank.
• We have begun implementing a
new Strategic Plan that highlights
important growth opportunities such
as Distance Learning.
• We have closed the Rine Dorm to begin
needed renovations and upgrades
during the 2013-14 school year.
• We have kept our tuition rates flat this
school year to keep CCU affordable for
our students.
Thank you for standing alongside us,
helping to push the flywheel. Let’s keep
the momentum going.
All of these changes can be summarized in two simple statements: we want to offer better, more effective,
and more helpful degrees that prepare students both spiritually and professionally; we want
to serve Christian students who seek a wide range of careers in the church and the marketplace. Too
often in the past, prospective students interested in biblical higher education have chosen other universities
because CCU did not offer programs that fit their career goals. Our new initiatives reach out
to these students while maintaining vibrant programs for preparation for ministry.
NEW DIVISIONS: Last fall, the university was
restructured to create new academic divisions
reflecting specialized professional training, including
a School of Business, the Russell School of Ministry,
and a School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
The College of Adult Learning (CAL) has been
converted from an academic program to a full
division of the university meeting the needs of adult
undergraduate students who wish to continue their
education in a convenient, accelerated format.
NEW DEGREES: CCU’s faculty completed a
substantial revision of the university catalogue,
revising most of our degree programs and many
individual courses. In the process, a number of new
programs and concentrations have been developed,
including Business Management, Accounting, Sports
Management, and Organizational Leadership. CCU’s
new college degrees differ from previous offerings in
two key respects. First, most undergraduate degrees
are now shorter (120 hours), allowing students to
SO WHAT’S NEW AT CCU? A LOT!
finish their programs more easily while maintaining
accreditation standards. Second, the Biblical/
Theological Studies core of CCU’s college degrees has
been updated to ensure that our biblical education is
relevant to personal life and readily applicable to the
church and the workplace.
NEW FACULTY: To reflect the changes in courses
and degree programs, CCU has added six new fulltime
faculty members, including new professors of
Education, Business, Counseling, English, and Biblical
Studies.
NEW VENUES: CCU is exploring new partnerships
and new venues that offer new opportunities
to attract students and friends. These include
discussions with a marketplace ministry group and
an inner-city mission, and plans for the development
of new extension campuses and online learning
opportunities.
While a lot is new at CCU, we remain committed to some “old” things as well. Our values have not
changed: CCU exists to prepare men and women to serve the church and shape the world, and we
do so by training them in Scripture and developing their professional skills. Whether our students
seek to work in a church, a not-for-profit, a family business, a major corporation, a public school, or
a counseling clinic, all of them are well-equipped to represent Christ to the world. These values will
not change, and they are reflected in the names of two of our new academic divisions: the Foster
School of Biblical Studies, Arts and Sciences, and the Russell School of Ministry. These names remind
us of CCU’s heritage of faith and commitment to the church, and they inspire us in our dreams
and plans for the future.
The name of the Foster School of Biblical Studies,
Arts and Sciences indicates many reasons that it
takes a central position in the makeup of Cincinnati
Christian University.
First, we honor the investment made by R. C. and
Lewis Foster in CCU over the first several decades of
its existence. The elder Foster played a critical role in
establishing Cincinnati Bible Seminary, and both he
and his son made significant impact on hundreds of
students and, through them, on thousands of others
during the periods of growth that followed.
Second, the Bible has always been and will always be
at the heart of what happens at CCU. It guides the
mission of the school and is the focus of those who
work and study here. Biblical and theological studies
continue to be central to all degree programs.
Third, CCU believes strongly that students should be
prepared with a complete education to engage the
culture in which we live. Therefore, a strong program
Dr. J. Michael
Several years ago, CCU instituted the Russell School
of Ministry to commemorate the retirement of Bob
Russell, one of our school’s best-known alumni. Soon the
initiative was expanded to honor to contributions of the
entire Russell family to the work of the Lord through the
Restoration Movement. Initially this involved a certificate
program in preaching and leadership, a scholarship
program for ministry students, and the establishment of
an endowed chair for ministry. The academic restructure
of the university presented CCU with the opportunity to
create an even more appropriate honor for the Russell
family.
The Russell School of Ministry is now the name of a distinct
division of the university that is the home of the school’s
in the arts and sciences is also an important part of the
training received by our students.
The Foster School of Biblical Studies, Arts and Sciences
supports all of the other divisions of CCU as well as
offering degrees in areas such as Biblical studies,
interpreter training, and communication arts. We are
looking to expand into other programs as well.
In the coming year, two new faculty members will be
joining those currently working in our division. Dr.
Tom Vollmer will be an associate professor of New
Testament, and Shawnee Fleenor will be serving as an
assistant professor of English.
The Foster School of Biblical Studies, Arts and Sciences
seeks to honor the heritage of the past while striving
to move forward in equipping leaders in all fields for
today and for the future.
leaning into
the future
The music faculty of the Russell School of Ministry includes
Dr. Ken Read, who specializes in composition, Professor
Brenda Lang, who specializes in vocal performance,
and Dr. Gary Gregory, who specializes in instrumental
performance.
In the ministry department, the faculty includes Dr. Mike
Shannon, who specializes in preaching, Dr. David Ray, who
specializes in ministerial practice, Professor Nick Tomeo,
who specializes in youth ministry, Professor Steve Skaggs,
who specializes in missions, Professor Bill Baumgardner,
who specializes in evangelism, Dr. David Roadcup, who
specializes in discipling, and Dr. John Edmerson, who
specializes in cross-cultural ministry.
Integrating Faith
in the Classroom
CCU’s School of Education and Behavioral Sciences
has great momentum right now due to our focus on
workplace ministry and the addition of two more excellent
faculty members. Across the board, faculty and staff within
Education and Behavioral Sciences view their professional
fields of teaching, counseling, and psychology as places for
Christians to make a difference for God.
Graduates from CCU’s biblically based early childhood
education program hold a very important place in the
daily lives of thousands of children, giving them much
more than a quality learning experience. Education classes
at CCU focus on preparing teachers to love their students
as a reflection of the way God loves us. New professor
Dr. Danny Ciamarra, who joined the Education faculty in
early 2013, created a new course titled, “Teaching as an
Act of Love,” which helps teachers learn how to respond
to the emotional needs of students as God responds to
our needs. Dr. Ciamarra has expertise in many areas of
education, including middle childhood, math, and science.
To make room for more students in the Master of Arts
in Counseling program, CCU recently hired Dr. Marlene
Estenson, who has more than 30 years of experience
as a counselor and 20 years as an educator. Marlene
has served extensively as an adjunct instructor for
the counseling program, and now the Department of
Behavioral Sciences is thrilled she will be contributing on
a full-time basis. Because Dr. Estenson enjoys integrating
creative techniques into the classroom, her students
frequently share drawings, collages, music, art, poems, and
photography as they process their internship experiences.
Learning how to integrate faith into counseling is another
major emphasis in Dr. Estenson’s classes. She helps student
counselors in faith-based and secular settings learn how
to minister to clients in a way that reflects God’s love and
grace. To learn more about how the School of Education
Our Students
Create Value
Students desiring to build a strong foundation in
business leadership are a perfect fit for the educational
programs offered through our newly formed CCU School
of Business. Our degree programs are ideal for learners
who seek careers in corporate, nonprofit, or public
administration. Graduates of our program are currently
working in banking, finance, healthcare, human resources,
legal research, marketing, retail, and higher education.
Individuals who complete the business management
curriculum develop the management, interpersonal, and
technical skills necessary to succeed in today’s complex
business environment. Our students are learning to
manage strategically, communicate effectively, and apply
cutting edge business principles in ways that create value
for the organizations in which they work.
All of our courses are taught by qualified Christian faculty
and are rooted in the principles of the Christian faith and
encourage the practice of servant leadership. Students
also take courses inviting them to consider how their
work will become an integral part of their participation in
Christ’s mission in the world.
Some of the initiatives being implemented in the School
of Business are:
New degree specializations in accounting and
sports management with plans to add marketing
and organizational leadership degrees in 2014.
A new mentoring program to be launched in
January 2014. This experience partners business
students with local Christian professionals
who serve as mentors. The mentors meet
regularly with students to serve as role models,
coaches, and spiritual advisers, helping them
to consider career choices and how to best
apply their newly acquired knowledge in the
pursuit of their professional and spiritual goals.
The expansion of our internship program. We are
exploring partnerships with large corporations
as well as medium to small businesses to create
internship and co-op opportunities for our
students. These internships provide our students
with knowledge of career opportunities and how
they might better prepare to be a successful part
of industry.
music and ministry degrees. The music department
Adult students have found a home in the College of Adult Learning. Connecting
with like-minded adults, they are not alone in seeking to change careers or answering
the call of God for ministry (after years of running) or finishing a degree
that was interrupted by life issues or starting a degree at an “advanced” age.
Each student has a story, a dream that motivates
them to reach for that second chance to earn a
Bachelor’s degree. The stories are as different
as each person sharing them, but they are all
drawn to the biblical foundation upon which all
our degrees are based. The curriculum for the
Christian Ministries or Business Management
degrees prepares
students to develop
the necessary skills and
educational foundation
to lead in our everchanging
world. Some
students come with life
experiences that help
them focus on the goal
of ministering in their church, community, or
in local business, while others are preparing
to start ministries or businesses that meet the
needs of hurting people.
Adult students appreciate the value of their
education. Yes, it costs them money, but it also
costs them in sacrifices of precious time spent
with family and friends and sometimes even
with the church family. For a period of time
they scale back on commitments to other good
aspects of their lives so they can focus on their
commitment to education.
The accelerated format—classes meet for 4
hours 1 night a week—allows for flexibility of
juggling work, family, personal responsibilities,
and involvement in the local church. While the
year-round course schedule can be grueling, the
graduation celebrations
each May reflect the
gratitude, satisfaction
and complete joy
expressed by each
graduate. Our graduates
are surrounded by family
and friends who have
supported them along
the way—children, parents, grandchildren,
siblings, pastors, co-workers—electrifying the
and the anticipation of the next step God has
in store. Their second-chance dream is now
aligned with God’s dream.
seminary is marked by
great people. It’s not about the
place (though our seminary is a
great place, with a main campus offering
a breath-taking view of the city); it’s
about the people. In his book, Good to
Great, Jim Collins writes:
“
GREAT VISION
WITHOUT GREAT
PEOPLE IS
IRRELEVANT.
“
Let me tell you about some people who
make our seminary great. A number
are no longer with us, but borrowing
from Hebrews 11:4, though dead, they
still speak to us through their example
of faith. Many could be mentioned,
but one great example is Dr. Joe S. Ellis.
The biography posted on Ellis’ website
begins: “Born 1928 and grew up in
Sullivan, Indiana.” But what follows
marked him most: “Became a disciple
of Jesus at age 17.” * All of the greatest
teachers live out their lives as great disciples.
Though Joe Ellis died in May, 2013, he
still speaks. Preacher, scholar, writer,
professor, administrator, innovator,
lecturer, consultant, friend, he authored
seven books on evangelism and church
growth. Long before Rick Warren’s
Purpose Driven Life, Dr. Ellis published
his seminal work, The Church on Purpose,
printed in eight editions and translated
into multiple languages. Climaxing
a distinguished career, he joined our
seminary faculty in 1978, serving as
Dean, Professor of Church Growth, and
(after 1990) Distinguished Professor of
Practical Ministries. Dr. Ellis was a great
teacher and thinker, but those who
knew him best might say that, even
more, he was a great person. And great
people are what make a great seminary.
After over 35 years of pastoral ministry
and two years teaching in the college,
I’m now personally excited to move into
the seminary as a new faculty member
and Academic Dean. May God use all
our lives—past and present—to keep
making this seminary great!
Judy Pratt began her long relationship with Cincinnati
Christian University 35 years ago. She has served in a
variety of staff roles with distinction.
While serving as a student worker, Judy first earned
her Associates Degree in 2 ½ years. She continued her
studies as a non-traditional student. To help pay for
her schooling Judy worked full-time for CCU, taking
one class per semester. After 15 years she completed
her Bachelor’s degree, and 9 years later she earned her
Master’s degree using the same format.
It seems fitting that Judy should now serve our nontraditional
students as Dean of the College of Adult
Judy is able to empathize with the struggles of our adult
for serving people, a passion for reaching the lost for Christ, a firmly-held biblical
worldview, and academic potential.
More specifically, CCU recruited prospective
students who had a desire to train for fulltime
vocational Christian service with a focus
on evangelism and discipleship. Over time,
a belief seems to have developed that the
student profile described above is categorically
exclusive to individuals who desire to serve in
full-time vocational ministry in a church.
This misconception is one of the keys to CCU’s
future as a vibrant and distinctive Christian
university. While the number of prospective
students who want to serve full-time in a
church context may be shrinking, the number
of prospective students who fit the traditional
CCU student profile is holding strong. It just
happens that many of them want to earn a
degree in business, education, psychology,
etc. because their passion is to serve Christ as
leaders in schools, banks, businesses, and nonprofit
organizations.
We are seeking prospective students who
believe that a relationship with Christ can
transform lives, relationships, and the world
and whose personal pursuit of Christ serves as
the motivation to serve, love, and lead. Thus,
the degree program that a prospective student
desires and the career path that a prospective
student aspires to are secondary admissions
considerations, with primacy given to the
student’s love for God and a commitment to
living out the gospel of Christ regardless of
one’s professional context.
Maintaining a high spiritual standard for
acceptance is a critical component of our
growth strategy. We want to attract prospective
students who are prepared to fully embrace and
participate in the CCU Spiritual Development
Plan and achieve personal spiritual growth
while preparing to be effective advocates for
Christ in the church and the marketplace. This
benefits the student individually, it enhances
the campus environment, and it naturally leads
toward the fulfillment of the school’s vision,
which is to “train thousands to impact millions.”
CCU has always been known as a premier
environment in which to train for ministry, a
reputation that was built upon a world-class
Bible curriculum interwoven with effective and
relevant ministry philosophies, models, and skilldevelopment
opportunities. These will continue
to serve as the main building blocks of a CCU
education. The Bible still stands at the center of
our curriculum, we are committed to instilling in
our students a heart for a lost and broken world,
and we will train the highest caliber leaders
for the church and the marketplace. This is an
exciting season in the life of CCU and a time
for alumni and friends of the school to be very
proud.
Partner with us in our efforts to train the next
generation of Christian leaders. Refer us to your friends
and family members who are looking for a premier
Christian university, or submit their names and contact
information by calling us today at 1.800.949.4CCU(4228).
graduates. There was also a special luncheon
for all CCU faculty and staff, which allowed us to
express heartfelt appreciation to those who so
faithfully serve our school.
It was exciting to see 189 graduates receive their
ATHLEticS
athletic department
IN ATHLETICS: Before setting foot onto the
playing field, student-athletes are put through
rigorous training and conditioning, getting them
into shape for competition at the highest level.
Practices not only focus on technique and strategy,
but also the overall compatibility and chemistry
of the team. During competition, the team is
challenged to do their best, relying on the skills
that each team member brings to the field to lead
the team to a win. Student-athletes understand
that they not only represent Cincinnati Christian
University, but also the Lord as they play.
THROUGHOUT CAMPUS: Every student-athlete
on CCU’s campus understands that they are
not only athletes, but leaders. In the classroom,
they are committed to excellence, giving their
studies their all. In the 2012-2013 season, several
CCU student-athletes won not only athletic, but
academic honors, including eight NAIA Scholar
Athlete Awards. Student-athletes are not only
encouraged but required to be a part of student
activities on campus, building relationships
among the entire student body, not just their
individual teams. Spiritual development and
Christian service are also highly emphasized, with
participation at the individual and team level.
Beth Rogers
“
The goal of the
at Cincinnati Christian University
can be summed up in one word:
EXCELLENCE.
“
FOR THE FUTURE: Student-athletes are not only
prepared for their current season, but coaches and
athletic staff build into the students to provide
them with skills they can use in the future, both
in their careers and in life. Athletics provide an
opportunity to build lasting relationships and
develop skills that have a long-term benefit.
Student-athletes are also encouraged to remain
involved with CCU and the Athletic Department
after graduation. Alumni are a valuable resource
to CCU students, providing them with their
experience in applying the knowledge gained at
CCU.
The Athletic Department at CCU is not content to
remain in its current state for the long term. In the
2013-2014 academic year, CCU will add Women’s
Basketball and Men’s Volleyball to the lineup,
increasing the offerings to nine individual sports.
Additional sports are under consideration for
the future. Our Athletic leaders understand that
to remain excellent, they will have to challenge
themselves to continually grow, not only in
programs, but in the quality of play. Settling for
“good enough” is not an option.
welcome joshua Snyder
A 1996 graduate of CCU returns to Cincinnati Christian
University to serve as the Athletic Director as well as the Head
Women’s Basketball Coach.
Joshua says, “I am most excited about pouring into my coaches,
giving them what experience I have had and helping them
to maximize their abilities so they can in turn pour into their
athletes.”
The Athletic Department opened the new weight room
facility this spring for student-athlete training and
rehabilitation.
This room was funded through generous donations to
the Golden Eagle Club, a newly established Athletics
booster. For more information about the Golden Eagle
Club, please visit www.CCUathletics.com and look
