Thank you for choosing the South Bay Family YMCA. Whether you have selected us for your childcare needs, fitness enhancements,
swim lessons, camp opportunities, or teen programs, I’m glad you are here. At the YMCA, it is our goal to meet the needs
of our community. If you have suggestions, ideas, or feedback that would help us to better meet those needs I hope you will
share them with me or any of our staff members so that we can work towards improving the services we are able to provide
each day. I appreciate you putting your trust in our organization and selecting us to meet the needs of your family. My door is
always open and I love the opportunity to meet members. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
Quality is very important to me and my staff. Everyday we try to find ways to improve the work that we do. One of the things
you may notice is the format of this brochure. We hope we have made it a little easier for you to use so that program selection
and information are more readily available to you. Input on our new format is welcome.
In addition to our new format, I hope you will take the time to explore some of the new programs we are offering. Check out
our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – it’s a great workout and also a good self-defense technique for all ages. Take a look at some of the new
offerings from our awesome Camp department. We want to ensure summer is fun and exciting! We are also making an effort
to expand our family programs. Parents with little ones – consider our new Stroller Fitness and Y Toddler Time – both great
ways to interact with your kids. Want to shed a few pounds before summer? How about our Wellness Weight Loss Team Challenge?
See any of our certified personal trainers for details on this great program.
If you are a member of our YMCA you already enjoy the many benefits that your membership provides. If you are a participant
in one or more of our great programs, please take a moment to explore all that a YMCA membership has to offer you and your
family. It is a core belief and practice at the YMCA that, as a part of a community, no one who wants to benefit from our many
programs and services is turned away because they lack the financial resources. If there is any way I or any of our staff can be
of help to you and your family, I hope you will let us know. We are always glad to provide information on financial assistance at
any time.
Sincerely,
Swim Lessons: Commonly
Asked Questions
How long are the lessons?
• All swim level classes run 30 minutes in length.
What does my child need to bring to lessons?
• All children will need to have a swimsuit and towel, which
are not provided. For the upper levels, goggles are recommended.
• Sunscreen should be applied approximately 30 minutes
prior to class.
Where can I observe my child during lessons?
• We ask parents to remain in the designated viewing area.
• Please do not move chairs. We ask parents to use this
area to allow your child’s full concentration to be on the
instructor and the lesson, as well as to allow the lifeguard
to have full view of all areas in and immediately around
the pool.
What level should my child be in?
• Children will be given midterm evaluations, which will
indicate what level to register your child in for the following
session.
• If your child is new to our program or if it has been some
time since your child has taken lessons, please contact us
and we will do a level assessment.
What if my child is absent on the last day of class?
• All progress reports that are not given out on the last
day will be filed in the Aquatics office and kept for 2
more sessions.
Are lessons cancelled if it rains?
• Lessons run, rain or shine. Lessons are only cancelled in
the event of thunder or lightening.
Is there a lifeguard on duty during lessons?
• Yes! There will always be a certified lifeguard present
while lessons occur.
Can my child wear a diaper if he or she is not potty
trained?
• All children who are not potty trained must wear swim
diapers.
Where can I eat on the pool deck?
• There is no eating on the pool deck. Additionally, contamination
incidents can be drastically decreased if swimmers
refrain from eating at least 45 minutes prior to their
swim lesson.
What do I do with evaluations and what is their purpose?
• Evaluations can be turned in at the Welcome Center or
in the Aquatics office. They can also be completed online
at our website: www.southbay.ymca.org.
• The purpose of evaluations is to help the aquatics department
evaluate the aquatics program and make changes as
needed in order to better serve the participants.
who push the sport to the limits.
INTRODUCTION TO KAYAKING
One 2.5–hour lesson
Learn the basics you need to know to paddle a kayak safely
and effectively and have fun too. Using sit-on-top kayaks, we
begin by learning how to control our boats. Once this skill is
mastered we learn some maneuvers and techniques that make
kayaking more fun and safe.
Children under 10 must be accompanied in water by
parent or guardian.
COASTAL PADDLE
This is the next step after the Intro to Kayaking lesson. Lets
get out there and practice your newly honed skills. Here is a
chance to get some good distance under your keel and see
the Chula Vista coast from a new perspective. This intermediate
distance paddle is a challenge, and a great step in developing
your kayaking skills under the supervision of our instructors.
