Intensive English<br />

You can choose to study Intensive English full<br />

time. Improve your fluency, accuracy and expand<br />

your vocabulary through speaking, listening,<br />

reading and writing.<br />

OR<br />

English and Electives<br />

Study Intensive English in the mornings. In the<br />

afternoons, depending on your level of English,<br />

you may request placement in a particular area of<br />

interest or choose from the following electives:<br />

• Speaking, Listening and Vocabulary<br />

Development<br />

Develop and practise intensive listening skills<br />

while improving vocabulary knowledge, using<br />

authentic material from TV and radio, as well as<br />

textbook and internet-based resource material.<br />

Students will be writing dialogues using real life<br />

situations.<br />

• Reading, Writing and Vocabulary<br />

Development<br />

Improve general reading and writing skills using<br />

a wide variety of formal and informal reading<br />

texts such as magazines, newspapers and the<br />

internet. Develop a range of reading skills such<br />

as scanning, skimming and reading for detail.<br />

Learn how to plan and write with structure and<br />

cohesion.<br />

• Introduction to Tourism<br />

New Zealand has a worldwide reputation<br />

for its “pure, clean and green” image. Learn<br />

about tourism; one of New Zealand’s biggest<br />

industries, in a local context. Explore the<br />

Hospitality Sector, Adventure Tourism, Cultural<br />

Tourism and the move to Environmentally<br />

Sustainable Tourism.<br />

• Volunteer Work<br />

Students may consider volunteering in the<br />

<strong>Christchurch</strong> community in areas like: caring<br />

for the elderly, helping in schools, office<br />

work, or retail and gardening. Students enjoy<br />

practising their English and making new friends<br />

in the community. A good level of confidence<br />

in English speaking and listening is required.<br />

Please note: hours can be irregular during<br />

this course.<br />

• Introduction to Business<br />

Learn about Business in a New Zealand and<br />

international context. You will study company<br />

structures, marketing principles, aspects of<br />

globalisation, innovation, issues relating to<br />

branding and employment. The course will be a<br />

series of lectures and tutorials with some local<br />

business visits and will be project focused.<br />
