It is situatedin a quiet parkland that is conducive to learning. The <strong>College</strong> is only a 20-minute driveto downtown Toronto, the financial capital of Canada, and just minutes away from allmajor highways and centres of business. Shopping centres and medical facilities arenearby and can be accessed by walking or public transportation. Of particular interestis the easy 60-minute drive to Niagara Falls, at the United States border.PedagogyTo support our fundamental learning principles, class sizes are maintained with anaverage of 16 students per teacher. Students are engaged in class by dedicated and highlyqualified teaching staff. Many of our teachers have Masters and Doctorate degrees, as wellas teacher’s certification. The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is combined with theregular high school curriculum to motivate students and challenge their minds. Guidancefor the students’ chosen path of study is given by knowledgeable counsellors.Dress CodeEvery <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> student wears a uniform. This identifies them with the school andenhances their sense of belonging. The uniform consists of grey-coloured dress pants,a plain white-collared shirt, a tie, a <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> blazer, sweater or vest and blackdress shoes. Full dress uniform is mandatory for every student on each school day, alloccasions and on all field trips.Student SuccessSince the inception of <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> a large majority of our graduates have gainedadmissions to top universities in Canada and around the world including direct entry tomedical and law schools in the U.K. This is significantly higher than the average publichigh school in Ontario, where only 33% of graduates go to university.


CampusKnowledge is power…Knowledge is power…<strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s campus is composed of a single building on 4.5 acres of land, which hosts itsacademic facilities and the student residence. The building has restricted access to authorized staff,students and visitors and is monitored 24 hours a day. The residence and cafeteria are open to ourstudents all year round. There is also a state-of-the-art fitness facility; a gymnasium; a study hall aswell as fully equipped computer, science, art labs; and a music room. The entire building has bothwired and wireless internet connection.Study Hall and Computer LabThe study hall is quiet and spacious with floor to ceiling windows overlooking forested conservationland. Computers are available in the study hall for student research as well as in the modern computerlab. The computer lab is supervised and is important for the development of technological acumen.CafeteriaThe full food service cafeteria provides nutritious meals catered by an international team. The full mealplan is offered seven days per week, and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner from Monday to Friday,brunch and dinner on weekends (Saturday and Sunday), and weekday evening snacks. The cafeteria isopen 365 days a year. Special meals are prepared to accommodate students with dietary restrictions.Residence<strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> of Canada is a boarding school; we own and operate our student residence. Internationalstudents are required to stay in residence until graduation. The campus residence offers safe and comfortablerooms to over 300 students. The majority of the rooms are for single occupancy: only a limited numberof shared rooms are available. Living in the residence is ideal and convenient, especially during the wintermonths when students do not have to brave the cold temperatures to attend classes. Furthermore, theresidence is open to our students during the holidays and school breaks. Smoking and alcohol are strictlyprohibited in the school, in the residence, and on the school grounds.The residence rooms have a traditional layout. A single room consists of a bed with bedding, closet, studydesk, and a sink. Each room has a telephone and access to the internet.The residence is not co-educational. Male and female students are restricted to different levels of the residencebuilding and are closely monitored 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.The bathroom facilities are shared by five or six rooms. Students are able to use the cash card laundryfacilities (washers and dryers) in the residence building.Residence LifeOutside the school, the residence department organizes visits to the city’s main library, movie theatres,swimming pool, bowling alley, and popular shopping centres. On weekends, there are organized dayor overnight trips to exciting places of interests, for example Niagara Falls, Canada’s Wonderland,Montreal, New York, and Blue Mountain Ski Resort. Typically, there is one trip every second weekend.The Residence Life Program is mandatory for students who are under the age of 17 years, and includesmost of the weekend day trips described above. Supervised evening study sessions are mandatory forstudents who are younger than 17 years of age.


Grades 9 & 10Grades 9 and 10 are comprised mainly of courses aimed to provide the skill and content base for thespecialization years in grades 11 and 12. At <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong>, we believe that these courses are not justacademic foundations, but are also important for life experience and the personal development of ourstudents. Therefore, along with meeting the requirements of the OSSD, we also teach skills to fostersocial, cultural, recreational, emotional and intellectual growth.believe in yourselfand you will achieve…<strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> is organized around a semestered system. A student can accumulate up to 8 completehigh school credits from the beginning of September to the end of June without going to summer school.Hence, a student who has successfully completed grades 9 and 10 will have achieved 16 credits.Grades 11 & 12<strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers university and college preparation courses for grades 11 and 12 designed to equipstudents with the knowledge and skills they need to meet the entrance requirements for university andcollege programs. Students need to successfully complete 14 credits in grades 11 and 12 in order to obtainan Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).Students aiming to qualify for university admission must complete at least 6 grade 12 credits at thepre-university level. The teaching and learning emphasizes theoretical aspects of the course content as wellas concrete applications. All university or college preparation courses are based on rigorous provincialcurriculum expectations with emphasis on the development of both independent research and learningskills. Students need to demonstrate that they have developed such required skills when they completethe senior courses.Express ProgramThe Express Program is a grade 12, pre-university program which starts in January and has been speciallydesigned for qualified students who plan to complete their 6 Pre-University courses and enter university inSeptember of the same year.Course Recommendations for University ProgramsThe following course selections are recommended for students who are aiming to be accepted into aspecific faculty in university. Advanced Placement (AP) Program University Credit TransferThe Advanced Placement (AP) program, established over fifty years ago, is recognized forits excellence by over 90% of the universities in Canada, the United States, and more than55 countries. All students enrolled in AP courses can choose to write the AP exams in May.On request, results are forwarded by the AP <strong>College</strong> Board directly to universities of theirchoice. Students benefit by broadening their intellectual horizons,developing study habits for rigorous course work and sharpening cognitive andproblem solving skills.This further preparation gives our graduates an unparalleled edge in universitypreparation as well as unique standing in the university admission process.Cooperative (Co-op) EducationCo-op is a planned learning experience for grades 11 and 12 students that integratesclassroom theory with learning experiences in a workplace setting. future endeavour awaits…future endeavour awaits…English Language ProgramThe Language Centre and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> allows studentsthe opportunity to experience both a structured program, that helps to build the skills necessary for theirsuccess, and a more flexible independent study option to continue their language development.The structured ESL Program helps our students excel both in and out of an academic environment. Theprogram gives the students the opportunity to progress through the courses at their own pace, as theyfulfill the language requirements set out in the program. The courses are designed to help the students’transition from an ESL environment to a full English academic program. The ESL classes have an averageof 12 students per teacher which provides the support needed for these students to be successfulin their development.The Language Centre is based on a resource centre model which allows students to have an active part intheir progression and offers a large amount of support to these ESL learners. The Language Centre housesa steadily growing amount of resource materials for students to work through as part of their customizedprogram. Allowing the students to have access to the ESL resources, reading room, computer lab, andongoing teacher support is the key to their success. The Language Centre’s after school programsprovide students with extra one-on-one help, peer tutoring and language based clubs and allows themto continue improving their language skills in a more informal setting.The ESL department has an open door policy, so students can feel welcome to drop in at any time toget the extra support they require. Whether it is in relation to their language needs in academic classes,providing resources for proficiency test preparation, or general language concerns, the staff in thecentre are always ready to help.STUDENT SERVICESThe guidance and career services department assists students with their social and academic needsfrom discussing any issues the student is concerned with, to planning the student’s future, includingselecting the appropriate courses and applying for university. We speak with students and theirparents to determine the student’s goals and future plans and guide students in the right directionto be successful in their studies and in life. Students will always have the academic support theyneed as we monitor students’ progress and make recommendations to utilize the academic supportoffered by <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Ensuring students are informed of the requirements to graduate andarranging university visits gives students the information needed to make the right decisions inselecting a university. Our guidance counsellors welcome students who may need someone totalk through their problems with, and at the same time informing students about extra-curricularactivities and any events in the school helps them become more prepared and well-rounded foruniversity. Our guidance counsellors provide parents with an avenue to contact teachers andto discuss their child’s progress and any concerns that can help their child be more successfulat <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong>.


Independent Learning CentreThe Independent Learning Centre (ILC) is designed to provide students with individualsupport to improve understanding and enhance academic success. The ILC is staffed byteachers and tutors. This team provides the expertise to deliver one on one, group and studentled tutoring sessions. Tutoring can be arranged for students at lunch, after school and into theevening in most subject areas.The guidance department supervises the ILC and monitors the academic progress of allstudents. Recommendations will be made to students performing below standard to seekassistance in the ILC. As well, courses required by students that are not offered in ourregular academic schedule, may be arranged on an individualized basis.The ILC offers a quiet and welcoming environment for students to seek help, to ask questions,or to study.Extra-Curricular Activity<strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> recognizes the immeasurable value of education beyond the classroom.As such, a surfeit of extracurricular activities are offered. University of Guelph at <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong>, Mississauga- First Year University Courseseducation is a journeythat never ends…The University of Guelph, in cooperation with <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> of Canada, is now offering first yearuniversity degree equivalent courses at <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> in Mississauga. High school graduates(students who have completed high school and have graduated in their home country) who registerwith <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> and pass the Math and English Proficiency Tests are eligible to enroll in thisprogram. Courses are taught by University of Guelph appointed instructors and commence in January,April and September of each year. <strong>Bronte</strong> <strong>College</strong> high school graduates can have the advantage oftaking degree equivalent first year courses in this UGB Program while waiting to be considered forSeptember university admission.Students from countries where English is not their first language are required to submit a test score fromone of the following tests: IELTS, TOEFL, MELAB. Applicants who do not meet the requirements arerequired to study pre-university English courses aimed at improving their level of English proficiency toa standard that meets the English Proficiency Requirements of universities.
