Taking Leadership Into Life
On the January 22 nd and February 26 th , Jackie Lowe Stevenson of Spirit of Leadership led a workshop for
many of the student and faculty leaders in the equine program. This two-part seminar, entitled Taking Leadership Into
Life, explored each person’s individual leadership style, their strengths and challenges, and how to use all of those
things to best lead the people around them. The first portion used the Kolb Leadership Styles and Preferences Test to
give the participants an idea of their learning style and leadership strengths areas. The second seminar built on that
knowledge, weaving in the Appreciative Inquiry Process developed by Case Western Reserve University to positively
facilitate change within a group. Both days involved activities with horses in the barn, which encouraged team participation,
reflection on the horse’s behavior, and reflection on how the horse’s made the people feel in return. Through
much discussion, the participants built leadership and communication skills to learn how to integrate effective teamwork
strategies in a vast array of situations, including academic and professional settings.
At the end of both days, all the participants were feeling very enlightened and motivated to use what they
learned through the seminar. Students and professors alike were looking forward to using some of the strategies and
ideas discussed, and everyone was able to take something positive away from their time spent at these seminars. On
behalf of all of those who attended, thank you to Jackie Stevenson for your time and sharing your knowledge with us!
We are looking forward to developing many future leaders through this school.
Event Spotlight
Beginning this weekend, Lake Erie continues the tradition of the Prix de Villes with
the Dressage Prix de Ville starting on Friday, March 30. Since 1966, the Prix de Villes has
been the premier equestrian event at the college, and one of the top shows in the region.
There are two divisions, the Dressage Prix de Ville and the Jumper Prix de Ville. The Prix
de Villes are based on a team competition format, but also allow individual competition.
Each Prix offers a variety of classes for competitors, and draws people from miles away.
Several LEC students and professors will compete at these shows this season, and we encourage
anyone who would like to come and watch to do so; the shows are open to the community.
Good luck to everyone competing!
