I
didn’t have a good start in life. I was
abused as a child and at the age of
four I was taken into foster care with
my two younger brothers. At the age
of eight I was sadly separated from my
two brothers to another foster family.
I grew up feeling I was different to
everyone else. I was a lonely child with
no confidence.
But at the age of 16, I met my soul
mate, my best friend, my partner
and four years later we planned to
start our family. In November 2008
our daughter was born. We were
overwhelmed to have a little girl: a
life that was so precious and loved
very much and we wanted to get her
baptised at our local church. Through
baptism we knew that our child
would be blessed and although not
Christians at that time, we knew our
child would be looked over
and protected.
On December 21st
in 2010 we had a
beautiful little boy.
The joy of having our
baby at Christmas was
amazing. I knew that
someone had blessed
us with two precious lives.
News
For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strength I need. (Phil 4:13)
Lisa McCarthy of Tiverton, tells us why her faith came alive
following the birth of her son at Christmas.
I realised that God has always been
there with me, through all the good
and the hard times in my life. After the
birth of our son at Christmas I realised
I had faith.
My faith gives me a sense of comfort,
hope and faith in myself and a
purpose to love and be loved against
all the struggles I have faced. I’m
beginning to understand that having
faith means God also enables me to
forgive others. Faith has changed
my life and I am slowly becoming a
stronger, more confident and happier
person, with great support around me
from friends, family and most of all
the church community and
God. I am blessed.
Church book:
Historian Dr Todd Gray, Honorary Research
Fellow at Exeter University, has produced
a beautiful and informative book, Devon’s
Fifty Best Churches. The book includes 292 images
(most in colour) and 49 maps. The forward is
written by Bishop Michael. Todd says, ‘My life’s
work has been promoting Devon history and my
book on Devon churches is the first step in trying
to bring these buildings to the attention of the
wider community interested in Devon’s past.’
The book costs £15.
Education Sunday
5th February:
FOR over 100 years this national
day of prayer and celebration has
been held for everyone involved
in the world of education. It’s a great
opportunity for schools to celebrate
their achievements and their work
with their parish church.
There are many different ways in
which this can be done.
Sunday for worship? Find resources at:
The Awake Café church in Tiverton
Are you
IT’S 9am on the third
Sunday of the month.
The aroma of fresh
coffee drifts across the
room, tea pots and
continental breakfast is
laid out. Sunday papers
and music from the ‘band
of the week’ play in the
background.
People of all ages from
babies to seniors arrive
to a warm welcome.
The average attendance
is 25 adults and six to
eight children. Pictured
is St George and St Paul’s
Awake Café Church,
which has been running
for a year in a church
hall room, refurbished
with contemporary café
furniture. People chat
or read papers over
breakfast, then a short
film clip (Nooma or
other) is shown and a
brief open discussion
takes place around
the subject. Music
helps people reflect
on what has been
shared, while the
children are looked
after. Then with music
and projected imagery,
thoughts are gathered
before God in prayer.
The Vicar, Revd Barry
Dugmore says, ‘The
vision for Awake is to be
a friendly and relaxed
environment where
people can experience
Christian community and
explore questions of life
and faith from a Christian
Anna prepares to send
the good news to the
first 33 successful
applicants.
A total of 33 projects from
across our diocese have
been awarded grants of
under £10,000 from the
Million for Mission fund
set-up to resource church
projects. Recipients of
the larger sums are still to
be announced. Diocesan
Missioner Canon Anna
Norman-Walker
tells us more…
The Diocese of Exeter has recently
been identified as one of only a
few Dioceses nationally which
are growing numerically in all age
average weekly attendance.
This is something to celebrate!
However, having set ourselves a
target figure of 25% growth we still
have some way to go and to this
end a million pounds of diocesan
reserves have been released to enable
churches to build upon the work they
are engaged in and to enable fresh
outreach projects to be launched.
As well as the 33 projects which have
already received funding, the parishes
which applied for larger sums will have
been notified by the end of November.
The second deadline for bids from the
Million for Mission Fund is 21 Jan 2012.
A list of the 33 projects and further
details can be found on the diocesan
website www.exeter.anglican.org
The Rt Revd Michael Langrish, Bishop
of Exeter, says, ‘Both the grant panel
Enabling
mission
in Devon
and I were absolutely delighted at
the response to this fund, as we
received some £2.7 million pounds
worth of requests for the first round
of grants, many of which were highly
imaginative and mission oriented. This
did mean that careful consideration
was given to every application to
ensure that the projects most closely
meeting the criteria for which the fund
was set up were supported.’
Here are just three of the projects that
have won funding:
Paignton
Paula Mayer working at The Haven,
a Women’s Project in Paignton, was
delighted to receive news of the
funding. Her reaction – ‘Awesome!
Having comfortable and more
appropriate surroundings will much
enhance our capacity to share the
Gospel of Love with the marginalised
of our town. We trust that by the
Grace of God we shall see broken lives
restored and hope renewed!’
Ugborough
The Lay Chairman of Ugborough
Parochial Church Council David
Stafford says, ‘We are delighted to
receive the award and are very grateful
The community in
Ugborough celebrate
their successful
application.
Mission
to the committee. With the reordering
of the west end of the church we
have been enjoying a weekly coffee
morning for the parish as well as a
monthly All Age Service. We can
now look forward to hosting the Post
Office weekly and can also provide
a comfortable area for mothers and
toddlers. The whole theme has been
in our hearts for some time and we are
pleased to offer a friendly atmosphere
in which to share God’s word and his
love with all in the parish.’
Barnstaple
Jerry Kent, Churchwarden of Trinity
Church says, ‘On behalf of the
Barnstaple Mission Community, I
would like to say how useful this
money will be for local mission
throughout our eight church
communities and with our partner
churches across the town. This support
encourages us as we reach out to
many around us; from the very young
to the elderly, the homeless and the
lonely, those who have turned away
from Christ as well as those who are
searching. Each element helps to
equip our existing outreach but will
also lead to even more well resourced
mission in the future. Watch this
space!’ Barnstaple’s current mission
activities that will benefit include:
••Open the Book
••Mothers and toddlers
••Messy Church
••Homeless drop-in
••Holiday at Home
••Acoustic café
••Youth worship and teaching events
Mission Resources
Adviser the Revd
James Hutchings is
on the move and tells
us to keep on building
the resources for God’s
mission…
It’s not
about the money...
SINCE September
2009 it has been
a great privilege
meeting and learning
inspiring and dedicated
fellow Christians in
mission communities
across Devon. It’s a
large county so not
always easy to feel part
of the diocesan family,
but I thank God for our
commitment to proclaim
the gospel everywhere
in Devon and to work
together as one, sharing
each others burdens
and joys in ministry and
mission.
In the words of a recent
song “it’s not about the
money, money” – issues
of finance are symptoms
of our approach to being
a disciple of Jesus Christ.
When we fall in love then
we want to give the other
person everything. If
we deepen our sense
of God’s love for us, our
response of giving grows
in return.
The good news is that
the response of giving
has been deepening
progressively over recent
years. It’s not rocket
science: lead and teach
about Christian principles
for giving, communicate
effectively its positive
impact, organise a
regular review, and don’t
forget to say thank you!
I am sad to leave this
role, but excited about
moving to lead a great
team in Littlehamcum-Exmouth
with
Lympstone. Can I say a
huge thanks to all of you
who have helped me in
my work? Please get in
touch with my successor
Patrick Parkes to continue
the journey with him in
building the resources
we need to enable God’s
mission of love for the
people of Devon.
Church Schools
and Academies
THE Synod heard a
report about the
rapid changes in
organisation of education
and the impact which
the introduction of
Academies could have on
Church Schools. This has
the potential to seriously
jeopardise the future
involvement of the Church
in statutory education
of young people. In
order to safeguard our
involvement in Church
Schools as they become
Academies, we have had
to set up a new Charitable
Company (Exeter
Diocesan Education
Network -EDEN) and
implement a large
number of new legal
structures to safeguard
our position. This, of
course, has resulted in
additional expenditure
which has been made
necessary by external
decisions over which we
have no control.
Most of the members of synod
are elected representatives of
deaneries. Elections are held
every three years and anyone on
the local Church Electoral Roll is
eligible for election. For further
details of synod, please contact
your local representatives.
Synod
DIOCESAN
news
8th October 2011
The Ordination
of Women to the
Episcopate
THE Synod debated the proposed
legislation for the ordination of
Women to the Episcopate which
had been referred to all Diocesan
Synods by General Synod. The decision
to be made was not that as to whether
women could or should be ordained as
bishops but rather whether the Church
of England should pass the legislation
required for this to happen in the form
proposed by Synod.
The Synod also considered two separate
following motions which would be
referred back to General Synod
asking for amendments.
These had to be separate
motions as no amendments
are possible to a motion which
General Synod has referred to dioceses.
The debate on the legislation itself
lasted for two and a half hours and the
motion was passed by Synod.
A further one and a half hours was
devoted to the following motions. One
was rejected and the other passed, the
effect of which if adopted would be to
increase the safeguards for those who
cannot accept the ordination of women
as bishops.
Your diocese
The Million for
Mission Fund
SYNOD heard a report about the
allocation of the first allocation
of £600,000 from the Million
for Mission Fund. At the time of the
Synod, the first 33 cheques for grants
of £10,000 or under were about to go
into the post and the larger grants
were awaiting further scrutiny at a
further allocation meeting, although
it seemed likely that the
balance would consist
of a further eighteen
larger grants.
Synod also:
•• Approved the Diocesan Budget for 2012.
•• Received the audited Annual Accounts of
the Diocesan Board of Finance for 2010
•• Took note of and commented upon a
report from the Diocesan Expenditure
Review Group which will be considered
in detail at the December meeting of the
Bishop’s Diocesan Council.
•• Heard about the forthcoming launch of a
new legacy giving campaign.
A comprehensive 10-day pilgrimage
based in Jerusalem and the Galilee
A comprehensive 10-day pilgrimage
. . . or at least, that’s what
it says on a shop near
the Cathedral in Exeter.
And for many adults,
that’s just how it feels,
especially when it comes
to Christmas.
As a child, Christmas was
a magical time, awaited
with great anticipation
and growing excitement
until the great day finally
came; after a sleepless
night, the presents were
waiting to be opened,
and all there was to
do was to receive and
enjoy. Whereas, for many
adults, Christmas, and the
approach to it, is so often
instead a time of anxiety,
exhaustion and stress.
Why is this? For many
adults a good Christmas
so much depends on us,
our planning, our effort,
on how much we expend
in time and money, and
on how much others
fit into the idealised
occasion that we want
to create. Whereas for
children, Christmas is
all about gifts, mystery
and a readiness to be
surprised by what they
did not expect, as well
as delighted when they
do get what their heart
desired. And in this
respect, I suspect that
many of them have a
much deeper grasp of the
real meaning of Christmas
than many of us.
At the heart of Christmas
there is a gift; and joy
in the birth of a baby
who, surprisingly in the
poverty of his entrance to
the world, is able to show
us so much truth about
ourselves, our world, our
relationships with one
another, and about God.
And this gift, too, needs
time and space, to receive
it, unwrap it, play with the
meaning of it in our own
lives. Perhaps it should
come as no surprise that
the wonder of that child
of Bethlehem seems
most easily appreciated
by other children, with
eyes more open to the
real values in life, and
to glimpse God, in a
very different and far
more intense way than
most adults could ever
conceive.
So, as we give gifts
to our children and
grandchildren this year,
perhaps we should be a
little more open to what
it is that they give back to
us - and, if the dinner is
late because we’ve been
playing with their toys,
sharing their laughter,
or just enjoying their
presence, does it really
matter, when we might
just be encountering
something of significance
not just for Christmas but
the rest of the year too?
By learning from children
it might yet be that “the
older you get, the better
it can be.”
What’s On
Driving with
a difference
Communications Officer Nicky
Davies had an eco-driving lesson
and was surprised by how much
money she can save…
STAFF at the Old Deanery were
encouraged to leave their cars
at home for the day on Car Free
Day in September and some of us
had an Eco-Driving lesson to learn
how, by changing attitudes and
techniques behind the wheel, fuel
use, and therefore emissions, can both
be reduced. By driving with greater
anticipation and care, there can be
improvements to the environment, to
road safety and to the costs of running a
car. Nicky’s top tips:
•• Anticipate – don’t simply follow the
car in front but look ahead to see the
driving conditions and slow down in
good time if needed - keeping the
car moving helps to reduce emissions
from stop/starting.
•• Be proactive – not reactive.
•• Use the brake to slow down – then
choose a suitable gear, rather than
changing down through the gears.
Thanks to Andy Brown for the lesson.
