place from the Butt to Barra during spring & summer.

Introduction
A journey through the Outer Hebrides will take you to some of the most
remote and beautiful scenery in Europe. Vast expanses of moorland, stunning
shell sand beaches, machair grasslands, dramatic cliffs and rugged
hills all contain a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Together with a unique
culture, history and the Gaelic Language this provides an inspiring island
environment for the creative visual artists and crafts makers who live and
work here.
This publication aims to guide you to the galleries, studios, workshops,
retail outlets and websites where visual art and craft, made in the Outer
Hebrides, can be viewed, enjoyed and purchased. To celebrate “Year of
Homecoming“ this edition of the guide also details the islands’ network
of Comainn Eachdraidh. Run by dedicated volunteers these local historical
societies hold a treasure trove of information gathered over many years,
including photographs, oral histories, genealogies, croft histories, artefacts
and archives. They offer an opportunity to study the history of island life and
trace family roots back through the centuries.
Although all details are accurate at the time of going to print, it is advisable
to check opening times before travelling long distances to particular
venues. The guide is divided into three sections – Lewis, Harris, Uists/Barra
– by maps showing the locations of venues that open to the public or can
be visited by appointment.
have included the creation of
Both nam Faileas: Hut of the Shadows by artist Chris Drury is located at Sponish, 20 minutes walk from
Lochmaddy. It was commissioned by Taigh Chearsabhagh and funded by SAC Lottery and The Esmee
Fairbairn Charitable Trust.

Both nam Faileas is located on the end of a spit of land and surrounded by sea, islands and sky, the work
is a grass-roofed, stone tumulus which mirrors the shapes of the surrounding islands. It has a curved
passageway leading into a small chamber which by means of a lens and three mirrors built into a wall,
projects onto the opposite wall, the landscape around it, like an old slightly blurred movie.
Barra Bunting is an on-going community project inviting people who have set foot on Barra and/or Vatersay
to create a flag to be added to bunting chains, which are used to decorate events throughout Barra
and Vatersay. The project was created and is run by Barra and Vatersay Island Produce Show, with initial
financial assistance from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. For further info, or to contribute to the project please
see wwwbarrabunting.net or Facebook/barrabunting. Many individuals have already contributed textile
flags from as far afield as the USA and Australia. In 2013 Barra Bunting won the Scottish EPIC Award.
These awards aim to put voluntary and amateur Arts in the spotlight and showcase best examples from
across the UK.

Sgeulachdan na Mara - Sea Stories explores the intimate relationship between people and place and
seeks to make visible the rich cultural knowledge that exists in the seas around Barra and Vatersay. It has
been developed as an online cultural map by artist Stephen Hurrel and social ecologist Ruth Brennan,
in association with Voluntary Action Barra & Vatersay and involved school pupils in interviewing Barra
fishermen and older members of the community. It will continue to be added to as further ‘sea stories’
are gathered by Castlebay School’s media students and the wider community. The map is accessible
to the public at local cultural events and to the wider world via the Internet. Please feel free to visit the
website now to explore this unique cultural map of the sea, and to contribute to the project yourself. The
project was funded by Creative Scotland’s First In A Lifetime Award, Comunn na Gàidhlig and Comhairle
nan Eilean Siar with support from Scottish Association for Marine Science, and the Marine Alliance for
Science and Technology for Scotland. See www.mappingthesea.net/barra

Hebridean Connections is a project that brings people together around a shared interest in the history and
providing a vast resource, where a worldwide audience can find out about island people and their way of
life in times gone by. See www.hebrideanconnections.com
