success: the bottom line. They scrutinized
expenses at the same time they delegated
responsibilities to their capable committee
members. They added new marketing efforts
to increase word-of-mouth advertising,
effecting a “buzz” that was clearly apparent
during the last week, especially, when we were
besieged by last-minute requests to create
additional tables. Their selection of Nan
Rasmussen as Auction Chair, and her choice
of Tammy Conits, Dena Stone Benedict ’78,
and Nancy Farr Strausbaugh ’84 as division
chairs, evolved into an enthusiastic and
cohesive group of solicitors for auction items.
The artistic vision and creativity of decoration
chairs Kathy Townes and Jennifer Taylor
Sterling ’80, along with Angela Keown Hart
’81, transformed the Carolina First Center
hallway and ballroom into a magical vista with
an Asian theme. Lisa Ashmore handled all
the operational logistics, and Beegi Clohan
and Mimi Hallman managed to arrange
over 300 items with an eye to both display
and access. Blair Dobson Miller ’00 and
Liza Wilson Ragsdale ’99 were two of our
young alumni who accepted the challenge
of arranging for musical entertainment and
creating the invitation, respectively. Lower
School teacher Martha Wrenn played
several roles and convinced faculty and many
others to participate. Volunteers like Dana
McCall (reservations), Sara Lynne Roettger
and Linda Townes (promotion), and A. B.
Stewart (breakdown) accepted jobs that were
both difficult and critical. Board Vice-Chair
Eva Marie Theisen Fox ’83 and immediate
Past Board Chair Rod Grandy recruited a
committee that accepted the challenge of
soliciting sponsorships during the fall of
2008, a time of great anxiety and pessimism
about the economy, convinced that the value
of CCES in this community would still
generate corporate
philanthropy; their
efforts brought in
almost $50,000 from
22 sponsors.
The Board of Trustees,
Dr. Cox, and the
Advancement Office
extend our thanks
and admiration
to these and other
outstanding volunteers,
to our sponsors and
underwriters, and to the
644 supportive guests
who attended this event
and brought the vision
to life and the dream to
a reality. ■
