Alumni Events 2009 Sports Hall of Fame: Abby Simon Lyle ’99 • October 3, 2008 by Viviane Till As the sun was setting over Carson Stadium on October 3, the CCES 2008 Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony revisited the school’s athletic history. While the Cavaliers prepared to play Whitmire in the annual Homecoming football game, Jonathan Breazeale ’87, President of the CCES Alumni Association, and Dr. Lee Cox welcomed guests, fans and previous Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Nancy Yeargin Furman ’73, John Jennings ’84, Park Owings ’82, John Sterling ’79, and Scott Summers ’91 to a “Celebration of Volleyball.” Emily Reynolds ’00 inducts Abby Simon ’99 into the CCES Sports Hall of Fame. Emily Reynolds ’00 flew to Greenville from Washington, DC (where she is the Deputy Director of Communications at the National Women’s Business Council) to induct her teammate and friend, Abby Simon Lyle ’99, with warm and heartfelt memories of their exploits on the court. Abby, a Miami attorney, attended CCES for two years, but in that short time left a permanent mark on the volleyball court. As team captain and two-time CCES MVP, Abby and her team were undefeated regional champions and in 1998 became the 1A State Championship Team. Abby earned Regional Player of the Year and All-State Player of the Year honors for two consecutive years, 1A Volleyball Player of the Year, and the Gatorade Circle of Champions South Carolina Volleyball Player of the Year. She also set the CCES school record in shot put and discus in 1999 and was named All Region and All State in both these sports, earning her the Coach’s Award. Abby was awarded a volleyball scholarship to Furman where her leadership and love of the sport flourished. She was named to five All-Tournament Teams, including the United States Air Force Academy All Tournament Team and the William & Mary Hi IQ All-Tournament teams. Abby was also a NCAA Post-graduate Scholarship Finalist. She played on the Athletics in Action International Volleyball Team, which opened up opportunities for volleyball athletes in Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and Germany. Alumni Events As Abby’s parents look on, Athletic Director R.J. Beach announces the retirement of Abby’s volleyball jersey. At the ceremonies Athletic Director R.J. Beach made CCES history by retiring Abby’s volleyball jersey Number 3—the first time a CCES female athlete’s athletic jersey was retired. Abby joins Mills Ariail ’91 and Rasmi Gamble ’02 in having their jerseys hanging in McCall Field House. Continuing the celebration, Volleyball Coach Jennifer Numberger recognized Karen Cochran Kee ’95, Hannah Rogers Metcalfe ’95, Annie Woods Parker ’97, and Caroline Cheves ’95, all members of the 1994 Volleyball team, the first to win a CCES State Championship. She also recognized volleyball state champions Thea Van der Zalm ’01, Emily Reynolds ’00, Katherine Chisholm ’01 (represented by her mother Susan Chisholm), and Kate Williams Powell ’01 (represented by her father Doug Williams, our JV Volleyball Coach), who were all on hand to celebrate this very special occasion. ■ Members of Abby’s family and teammates display the resolution retiring her jersey.
