COURSE DESCRIPTION and OBJECTIVES This six-day course is designed primarily for physicians, emergency medical personnel, paramedics and nurses, but instructors, dive masters and other non-medical dive related personnel might also find the course of value. The goals of the course are: to provide the facts relevant to understanding the management of diving accidents, especially those bearing on the basic physics and physiology, and the subsequent treatment methods available; provide an opportunity for DAN Preferred Provider Network and referral clinicians to update their knowledge and skills in medical management aspects; and, to allow a forum for discussion of diving related medical management problems. Through lectures, case presentations, printed support materials, and both formal and informal question and answer sessions with the faculty, it is anticipated that at the end of this course attendees should be able to discuss and clinically apply facts relevant to: • the diagnosis and treatment of diving related medical disorders including decompression illness (DCI), ear and sinus barotraumas, narcosis and high pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS), and marine animal injuries; • the emerging concepts and research relevant to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the long-term neurological consequences of diving; • the most common causes of recreational diving fatalities; • the strategies used by physicians to determine fitness to dive for recreational diving candidates; • case histories from the faculty files and the DAN database, as well as research currently being conducted in diving; The course participants should also enhance their technical information on: • the history of diving practices; hyperbaric chambers – classes A – C and their respective uses; • technical diving/commercial saturation diving, dive computers and bubble theory, equipment, re-breathers and loss of consciousness in diving; • carbon monoxide intoxication and iatrogenic gas embolism; • wilderness medicine to include medical kits, common emergencies, trip preparation and safe evacuation; This course will also review recent scientific research in hyperbaric medicine including: • established and emerging indications for hyperbaric oxygen treatment for diving and wound care; • the molecular mechanisms of hyperbaric oxygen; • hyperbaric oxygen off-label applications; In addition, this course will go beyond the usual dive medicine topics to discuss challenges to human physiology posed by venturing into in austere environments including: • human physiology involved in the emerging sport of breath-hold diving; • physiological barriers of diving; All of the above concepts will be reinforced by case reports from the DAN Medical Services Call Center Quality Assurance archives (MSCC), examples from ongoing research at The Duke
University Medical Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology, and, from the personal experience of the faculty whenever possible. All sessions will provide excellent opportunity for faculty - participant interaction. ACCREDITATION This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and the Divers Alert Network (DAN). The UHMS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CREDIT DESIGNATION The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) designates this educational activity for a maximum of 24 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s) TM . Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
