intro
about
We are all media producers:
the parent shooting cell-phone
video of the school play, the
friend sharing vacation photos
on Instagram, the smallbusiness
owner tweeting about
new products and discounts,
the young couple announcing
the birth of their first child
on Facebook. With smart
phones in our pockets, many
of us carry video cameras
wherever we go. And with
the widespread use of social
media, more and more of us are
publishing our creations. But
how do we take these exciting
new tools and use them to tell
compelling stories?
Now in its fourth season, the
Dorrance H. Hamilton Public
Media Commons continues
WHYY’s commitment to
sharing the institutional
knowledge it has acquired
nearly 60 years of media
production. With courses for
teens, middle schoolers, adult
learners and educators, the
Public Media Commons offers
students of all ages the skills
they need to add their own
stories to the public dialogue.
All public media Commons
programs offer hands-on,
project-based experiences.
adult learning Courses
Adult Learning Courses are geared toward adult
learners with stories to tell. Classes cover topics such
as camera use, editing skills and documentary video
production. Beginning and advanced classes — all
taught using commonly available computer equipment
and popular editing applications such as Final Cut Pro
— are offered. WHYY’s instructors are well-versed in
working with students at different skill levels, combining
discussions of the storytelling process with the
necessary technical skills.
Professional Development
Courses for Educators
Educators participating in professional development
courses learn methods for implementing 21st Century
Learning Skills in their classrooms. They learn to help
their students create digital media and receive tips for
integrating those skills into existing curricula and projectbased
learning approaches. Courses are approved for
Pennsylvania Act 48 credit. WHYY will also provide
documentation for Delaware and New Jersey educators.
Participants may be teachers of any content area looking
for a new outlet for student expression and education.
Classroom video and audio production projects are
designed to be student-centered. As such, participating
teachers learn to guide their students through handson
lessons while students develop their voices as
multimedia storytellers.
Youth Programs
The longest running of WHYY’s media courses, WHYY’s Youth
Programs offer hands-on production training for teens. Afterschool
programs teach 10th-12th graders to produce short
documentaries, create original radio stories and operate the
equipment in the Lincoln Financial Digital Education Studio.
Students can further explore their interest through a series of
summer and spring break camps with focuses on multimedia
journalism and filmmaking. Youth Programs encourage teens to
explore their own worlds through media as they create projects
on topics they select themselves.
SUPPORTING WHYY!
Let’s be honest – most of the stuff you
learn in school is pretty boring. And you’ll
never use it, unless you’re on JEOPARDY! or
something. But if you’re the kind of person
who can tell a good story or likes to goof
around with a camera, we can help you turn
that natural talent into awesome videos
that help you share your unique point of
