University’s Profile Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a Central University established in 1998 by an Act of Parliament to promote and develop Urdu language and to impart vocational and technical education through Urdu medium by conventional and distance modes. The Headquarter of the University is at an outstanding central location- Gachibowli, Hyderabad, sprawled over 200 acres. The students and staff of the University are drawn from throughout India. They are attracted by its commitment to excellence in quality Urdu education in all disciplines of knowledge. It has been accredited 'A' Grade by NAAC. The mandate of the University is as follows: • to promote and develop Urdu language • to impart education and training in vocational and technical subjects through the medium of Urdu • to provide wider access to people desirous of pursuing programmes of higher education and training in Urdu medium through Campus and Distance modes • to provide focus on women’s education Bearing the mandate, the following points further paraphrase the University's objectives: • The University is desirous to develop and promote Urdu and strives to regain its status of ‘language of knowledge' by translating and transferring new ideas, concepts, terminologies and by enriching it with new vocabulary. • For Urdu-knowing aspirants who were deprived of access to higher education, the University shall provide access to higher education through the medium of Urdu. • The University plans to create 'knowledge concepts' through the medium of Urdu amongst the youth, and to direct and train their creative dispositions to make them competent to perform their roles in the formation and construction of a forwardlooking creative society. CULLC Centre for Urdu Language, Literature and Culture (CULLC) is established with the approval of University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi in Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad with a vision of ‘protection and promotion of aesthetic and cultural values of Urdu language, literature and its historical consciousness’. The aim and mission of this centre is ‘to develop itself as a combination of archives, museum, library & cultural research institution’. CULLC aspires to be perceived as an authority in Urdu Language, Literature and Culture both in terms of collection and conservation. CULLC has a mission to develop its library as a National Repository in the domain of Urdu language, literature & culture with the cooperation of various institutions, libraries, research centres across the country like Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library, Patna; National Library, Kolkata; Rampur Raza Library, Rampur; A. P. State Archives and Research Institute, Hyderabad; Osmania University, Hyderabad; Idara-eAdabiyat-e-Urdu, Hyderabad; National Museum, New Delhi and individuals.
About the Seminar The detective fiction does not have that status, at least in Urdu Literature, which it deserves. There are a number of reasons, say objections, for not considering it as part of literature. One among them is that it belongs to popular literature which is written, keeping the dispositions and standards of the people in view for their entertainment. The focus of such type of writing is only crime and criminals. These writings neither have their values nor their tradition. Whereas in English literature, there is a strong tradition of detective fiction writing. As the famous writers of English literature, like Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Stephen Leacock, Edgar Wallace, Agatha Christie, Rider Haggard etc. have contributed with their valuable writings and established the tradition of detective writings in English. It is true that the detective fiction was introduced in Urdu literature with the translations of English detective fiction. No famous Urdu writer of high repute has written the detective fiction, except a few, like Mirza Mohammed Hadi Ruswa, Krishan Chander, Izhar Asar and modern short story writer Surendra Prakash. If the detective fiction in Urdu, is the result of potentiality and efforts of detective fiction writers only through the translated works, it means that the detective fiction in Urdu does not have its own tradition and values. If it is so, then how would we have to interpret the mysterious activities and sacraments found in Qasas-ul-Ambia to Urdu Daastanen, Hindu myths to Allegories in Urdu. The matter concerns human values in detective fiction. If the role of virtue is not comparable to pure literature, it does not mean that the detective fiction is the literature without values. In fact, the detective fiction is purposeful and value based literature. The basic concept of detective fiction is to exhibit the triumph of virtue over evil, in the battle of virtue and vice conflicting externally and internally in man. To catch hold of the criminal or to shoot him, is the symbolic expression of the success of virtue over evil, which strengthens human values in the inner self of a common reader in the name of entertainment. Another objection is about its popularity. Those who raise these objections ignore that pure literature neither survives nor develops in isolation. In fact, the popular literature is the lift which carries the layman/reader from Child Literature to High forms of Literature. At least, it cultivates the habit of reading and ignites love of books. Popular Literature is, therefore, as good and meaningful as Pure Literature. This conclusion is totally true at least for the writings of Ibn-e-Safi. His writings not only created his readers but they inculcated the love towards reading in the hearts of common readers. They developed their curiosity, literary taste and sensibility. The readers, who were conferred by creative talents, have started writing. Thus, these are the objectives of the seminar. Through this platform, we want not only to re-evaluate the writings of Ibn-e-Safi but also to review our suppositions and indulgence regarding popular literature. To frame the poetics of detective literature, if it exists or at least think and re-think about it.
