AWARDS The 2009 NAIDOC Perth Award winners were announced by Committee members Gail Beck and Angela Ryder at the Opening Ceremony. The Outstanding Achievement Award went to Dianne Ryder for her tireless voluntary work with disadvantaged and at risk children and the runner up was Samuel Dinah, for his tireless efforts as a staff member at the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA for over 30 years and as a Justice of the Peace. AWARD WINNERS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Proudly sponsored by NAIDOC Perth (Inc.) Winner: Dianne Ryder Di Ryder is a tireless volunteer worker. She works with at-risk and disadvantaged children. Dianne has voluntarily worked with the REAL (Recreation, Education, Arts & Life skills) program with the City of Swan and later with the PCYC at which she ran the Girls Taking Charge Program, teaching young girls life skills to cope with entering womanhood. This led to her becoming a youth worker with the PCYC. At the same time Di volunteered for the FAST (Families and Schools Together) program at Middle Swan Primary School. These are only some of the voluntary positions Dianne has held. Di is always prepared to work anywhere and at any time, 7 days a week in the past for her work. Runner-up: Samuel Dinah Samuel has worked at the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA for more than 30 years. Sam began as a court officer and now works as the men’s prison support officer and complaints officer. Sam is a well respected member of the Aboriginal community and a Justice of the Peace. MALE ELDER OF THE YEAR Proudly sponsored by Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc.) Winner: Harry Thorne (posthumous) Mr Harry Thorne was an Elder who recently passed away. He has left his footprints all over these lands. He was a founding member of Maamba Aboriginal Corporation. Harry also worked in the areas of health, education, men’s and youth groups for more than 30 years. Harry was instrumental in getting programs into the community, helping with the reconciliation process and strongly enforcing the legal and humanitarian rights of Aboriginal people. FEMALE ELDER OF THE YEAR Proudly sponsored by Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc.) Winner: Winsome Kickett Winsome is an exceptional Noongar woman and Elder who shows quiet determination and has taught her children the values of love and respect. At an age when most people her age are slowing down, Winsome is always busy, but never too busy for her family and those in need. Winsome gives of herself tirelessly, thinking of others and how she can help, often putting herself last. Winsome was a carer for her husband before his death and has a close and nurturing relationships with each of her children. Winsome recently became a carer for a newborn baby girl, her grandchild; is an active member of the Balga PS playgroup and is the play leader of the Balga PS Noongar playgroup. Winsome always encourages young mums to participate in the playgroup. Winsome takes a strong interest in the education of her grandchildren and often helps support her grandchildren. Runner-up: June Della Bona June is an elder of her family and her work has touched so many lives of Aboriginal children, youth and their families. June is a Noongar woman and has been a carer, nurturer and mentor for two generations of Aboriginal children and youth. June has been an active committee member of Moorditch Gurlongga Association for many years. June currently works as an Aboriginal and Islander Education officer (AIEO) at Kent St SHS (since 2001). 25
