Letter from Executive
Director and Board Chair
Dear Friends,
2008 was a transformational year for North Carolina Outward Bound. After celebrating our 40th
anniversary in 2007, we were faced with a year that marked the beginning of a national economic crisis.
This crisis presented an opportunity for our School to examine and change some of the ways in which we
operate in order to effectively meet the challenges that lay ahead. We believe that North Carolina Outward
Bound will be a stronger school as a result of these changes, allowing us to continue to change students’
lives in a very profound and positive way.
North Carolina Outward Bound continued to focus on the safety and quality of the courses and
programs we offer, serving more than 8,100 students and clients through our wilderness courses, group
education courses, Outward Bound Atlanta and Outward Bound Professional programs. Our staff and
instructors worked diligently to ensure that each student’s experience was one that was memorable and
transformational.
The majority of our wilderness courses included a service component in which students were involved
in a project that improved the environment or the lives of people in need. Our students contributed more
than 11,050 hours of service in communities in North Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Each of our courses
also included a component that addressed environmental stewardship. We are proud that our students were
taught “Leave No Trace” techniques that preserve our precious wilderness, and left with an appreciation of
the limited natural resources we have for our use and protection.
Our board and staff worked together diligently to ensure the effective management of the funds that
we received from our generous supporters. As such, we were able to continue to provide scholarship
assistance to 25 per cent of our open enrollment students. We were also able to continue to deliver
community-based programs to 99 diverse youth in nine public schools in three communities in
North Carolina that focused on diversity, character and leadership development, and compassion.
The total amount of scholarship assistance provided to our students in 2008 was more than $555,000.
Other accomplishments in 2008 included:
• Seven North Carolina Outward Bound instructors planned and participated in the Service Bus
project, an expedition that took them 8,500 miles across the country to help them improve their
professional skills while contributing more than 755 hours of community service.
• The Unity Project received a boost from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation through a $40,000 grant
to support the program’s operation and an independent evaluation, to be conducted by the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
• The Educator’s Initiative continued with its second crew of educators from four schools in Atlanta
and North Carolina. The program continues to demonstrate that experiential education is an effective
tool in fostering the professional and personal development of teachers, helping them transform their
teaching practices and positively affecting student learning.
• Through our partnerships with Summer Search, Philadelphia Outward Bound Center, New
York City Outward Bound, and schools and organizations in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Charlotte and
Washington, D.C., we were able to send 90 urban youth on one of our wilderness courses in the
Appalachian Mountains.
• Our Outward Bound Atlanta program served more than 5,000 students from the Atlanta Public
School system, playing a significant role in the character development and academic success of these
young people. The OBA AmeriCorps team contributed more than 12,000 hours of community service
in schools throughout Atlanta.
We are poised to meet the challenges that lay ahead, and are able to do so through the strong support
of dedicated board and staff members, volunteers, donors, and corporate and institutional partners. On
behalf of our entire School, we thank our Alumni and friends who have generously supported the mission
of North Carolina Outward Bound, which has inspired thousands to practice compassion, self-discovery,
environmental stewardship and service to their community.
With much appreciation,
An ethic of service goes
hand in hand with
North Carolina Outward
Bound’s dedication
to environmental
stewardship. On most
of our courses, students
have an opportunity to
participate in a service
project such as trail
maintenance or campsite
repair. Students give back
to the national forests
and coastal areas through
which we travel.
“I have learned to
open my heart to
not only the people
surrounding me,
but to nature as
well.”
up to $165,000 in endowment funding. As the money was raised,
equal amounts were credited to the School’s “account” at Outward
Bound USA. North Carolina Outward Bound receives income each
year for unrestricted scholarship assistance.
Wilderness Education
Through challenging experiences using the wilderness
as our classroom, Open Enrollment courses present
students a journey of self-discovery that provides
the basis for personal growth and development of
life skills such as: decision-making, problem solving,
self-reliance, leadership and teamwork. In 2008,
these courses for individuals (teenagers and adults)
took place in the wilderness of the Appalachian
Mountains, North Carolina Outer Banks, Florida Ten
Thousand Islands, Bahamas and Patagonia, Chile.
Ranging from 8-72 days in length, North Carolina
Outward Bound’s wilderness courses are physically
and mentally challenging. Our Four Pillars (Selfreliance,
Craftsmanship, Fitness and Compassion) are
integrated into every aspect of our courses to create
an experience that encourages individuals to reach
beyond their perceived abilities and discover their
potential to care for themselves and to reach out to
improve the world around them.
Outward Bound Atlanta
Outward Bound Atlanta was established in 1990 as a
program of North Carolina Outward Bound with a
mission to inspire young people through challenging
experiences to build confidence, compassion and
community. Outward Bound Atlanta conducts a variety of
programs in the Atlanta area for elementary, middle and
high school students, including in-school programming,
high and low ropes courses, and group initiatives. This
continuum of experiential education programs at critical
junctures in students’ academic careers provides them
with the tools and skills needed to succeed in and,
ultimately, graduate from high school to pursue postsecondary
education and employment opportunities.
Outward Bound Atlanta also operates an AmeriCorps
program, a ten-month National Service program that
provides young adults with the opportunity to strengthen
their leadership skills, to enhance their knowledge of
community service components and to align themselves
with their life goals.
began in 2007 to provide professional development
for classroom teachers for an entire school year.
Through a combination of wilderness expedition and
ongoing individual coaching and group discussion,
