Firstly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new committee 

members and thank them for being willing to stand for the committee and for 

offering their time to OSALL. I would also like to thank the committee for their 

vote of confidence in me as Chair. I feel most honoured and am looking 

forward to working with the committee and OSALL members over the next 

two years. As the new committee members were only confirmed on Friday, 

14 September 2012, the profiles of the new committee members for 2012- 

2014 are profiled in this issue of the Newsletter. 

Thank you to our new committee members, who have kindly offered their 

time and skills to OSALL. The new members are Thuli Kondlo from Norton 

Rose SA (Public Relations and Liaison) and Varsha Sookdhaw from 

Eversheds (Newsletter Editor). The position of secretary is still vacant. 

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our former chairman 

Fanus Olivier and other committee members, Diana Riley, Keki Maidi and 

Lydia Craemer for their sterling effort over the last few years and also to the 

committee members who remain on the committee, Danielle Botha, Mary 

Bruce and Mari Brightmore. 

The OSALL AGM was held at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr on Tuesday, 07 August 

2012. The Keynote speaker, Lita Spreeth (SARS Legal & Policy Division), 

spoke about the new SARS website, which was very informative despite the 

brief interruption by the Sandton snow show. Attendees were treated to a 

light snowfall which was an awesome experience for this former Durbanite.

MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES 

AGM: Wednesday, 3 August 2011 

The 35th OSALL AGM was held at Norton Rose 

(incorporated as Deneys Reitz Inc), Sandton. The AGM 

was sponsored by LexisNexis. Although each attendee 

received a gift, there were also lucky draws sponsored by 

LexisNexis, Red Pepper, and Juta . 

Nicky Campbell: a Legal Expert, was the speaker at the 

AGM and gave a presentation on the Consumer 

Protection Act and its impact. 

Year-end function: Friday, 28 October 2011 

OSALL had a wonderful year-end function. The theme 

was Bingo: 2011 Rugby World Cup is in Full Swing. Each 

attendee was asked to wear a Springbok Rugby uniform 

and a prize was given to the best dressed. We played a 

game of Bingo at the Juta sponsored function which was 

held at Doppio Zero, Rosebank where each attendee 

received a gift. 

The 1 st OSALL Legal Library Products Fair: 

Thursday, 15 March 2012 

OSALL held its first Legal Library Products Fair at the 

War Museum, Johannesburg. The aim was to bring the 

latest publications, services and products related to legal 

libraries to the attention of everybody involved in the field. 

Eleven exhibitors (South African Online Information 

Services, Sabinet, Academic Marketing Services, 

LexisNexis, Don Gresswell Library Products, Legal 

Library Services, Mindex, EBSCO, Juta Law, Coverseal 

Library Supplies and Red Pepper Books) exhibited their 

products. 

Helen Schutte: Deputy Director of Library Services at the 

North Gauteng High Court, was the speaker and gave a 

presentation on the process that goes into making a 

judgment. 

BIALL’s 43rd Annual Study Conference & Exhibition, 

Thursday 14 June – Saturday 16 June 2012 

The 43rd Conference was held at Hastings Europa Hotel, 

Belfast. Due to unforeseen circumstances, OSALL did 

not send a representative to BIALL Conference this year. 

Hopefully OSALL can send a representative next year to 

Glasgow. 

11 th SAOIM Conference 2012 

The eleventh South African Online Information Meeting, 

organised by the Southern African Online User Group 

(SAOUG) together with SLIS and OSALL was held on the 

5th – 8th June 2012 at the Sandton Convention Centre. 

The theme was: Innovation in an age of limits. 

Two workshops were held on Tuesday 5 June. Workshop 

1: Taming technolust: technology planning in a 

hyperlinked world by Michael Stephens from San Jose 

State University, Workshop 2: Personalisation of search: 

take back control by Karen Blakeman, RBA Information 

Services. 

The two conference days were on the Wednesday 6 

June and Thursday 7 June. Another three workshops 

were held on Friday 8 June. Workshop 3: Frankenbooks: 

understanding the e-book opportunity by Stephen Abram, 

Past-President of SLA and the Ontario and Canadian 

Library Associations, Workshop 4: Self-publishing by 

Kosie Eloff, from the Department of Information Science, 

University of Pretoria and Workshop 5: Mobile 

technologies for service delivery and marketing by iBala. 

All conference and workshop presentations received to 

date are now available on the 11 th SAOIM conference 

website (http://saoug.org.za/11th-saoim-workshops-andconference-presentations) 

Twenty-nine exhibitors exhibited at this year‟s 

conference. 

New Blog called: On Firmer Ground (http: 

//www.firmerground.com) 

The mission of On Firmer Ground is to promote the value 

that law firm librarians bring to the business and practice 

of law by providing an online forum for law librarians to 

share how they are providing innovative practice support,


leveraging technology to provide process efficiencies that 

allow lawyers and support staff to work smarter and to 

contribute to the bottom line by being effective business 

managers of the firm‟s information resources and knowhow. 

On Firmer Ground aspires to foster creativity and 

collaboration in the problem-solving process by placing 

its focus on actual and interactive discussions among 

those within and connected to the law firm information 

industry. We believe in the positive power of collaboration 

between professionals as a means to better understand 

and appreciate the contributions we make collectively to 

the effective operation of law firms. 

To further our emphasis on collaboration, On Firmer 

Ground will endeavour to bring together some of the 

leading national and international organizations for law 

firm librarians in a single platform to benefit our global 

industry. 

OSALL has joined this year to be part of the Blog and 

blogging initiative. 

The other organizations are:

In their first 6 months, they garnered almost 27 000 hits. 

Since January 2012, they have had almost 6000 visits. 

On the 1 st of March, they relaunched On Firmer Ground 

with more regular schedules and a more inclusive goal 

structure. They want to ensure that every organization 

that joins the blog is featured in turn by rotating them 

each week. The more organizations that take part, the 

fewer blog posts each will need to provide. 

Diana Riley is OSALL‟s representative for the editorial 

board. 

WEBSITE AND LISTSERV 

OSALL‟s Website and Listserv are going strong. Danielle 

Botha and Mary Bruce will give a 

full report. MACC is still hosting the webpage for 2012. 

OSALL wants to thank all the sponsors for all the

“friends” of us in the years to come. Thank you to the

WEBSITE ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT JUNE 2011 – 

JULY 2012 


The website has been functioning well over the last 12 

months, and continues to generate income for OSALL via 

advertisements. 

The African legislation initiative is still going slowly and I 

encourage all members with electronic African legislation 

to please send it to myself for uploading on the website, 

especially if you receive it after a request to the listserv. 

The SAOIM conference was quite the eye-opener this 

year, and Canadian speaker Stephan Abram gave some 

good tips for library organisation websites. In the light of 

his comments, in which he denounced websites reflecting 

images of books or technology, and emphasized that 

librarianship is about people, and the relationships 

between people, we have decided to redesign our 

banners. 

The LexisNexis design team has very generously 

sponsored some of their time to design new banners for 

OSALL, and are in the process of finalizing the banners. 

We thank them for this. 

We are still experimenting with new ideas and hope to 

convert the membership forms into electronic forms, 

which can be filled in on the website itself. 

As always, if anyone has any suggestions for the 

website, feel free to contact me about it. 

NEWSLETTER EDITOR’S REPORT: 

June 2011 to July 2012 

Diana Riley 

This was my final year as Editor of the Newsletter. My 

four years as editor have been a rewarding experience 

and I may have entertained the thought of continuing as 

editor were it not that the Cape Town office of Bowman 

Gilfillan will be relocating in 2013 and that the move to a 

new library will demand my undivided attention. Thank 

you very much to all who contributed in any way at all to


the Newsletter. It is you who ensure the continued 

existence of this Newsletter and I hope that the new 

editor of the Newsletter will enjoy your continued support. 

I am sure that everyone has heard of “On Firmer 

Ground”, the blog launched to promote the value of law 

librarians. It is a collaborative effort between various 

national and international professional groups. OSALL 

recently agreed to join the blog and we are required to 

post six short contributions per annum. I have agreed to 

be our On Firmer Ground liaison to ease the load of the 

editor of the newsletter. Because we‟re such a small 

organisation it seems likely that we will sometimes have 

to post contributions which appeared in the OSALL 

Newsletter. This will only be done with the contributor‟s 

permission. Thus far the people at OFG seem to be 

agreeable to this. 

Highlights of the past year‟s newsletters: In August 2011 

Fanus Olivier reported on his attendance of the 42 nd 

BIALL Conference, whilst Daphne Burger wrote about 

Lexinfo‟s Botswana experience where they continue to 

consult to the Court of Appeal and High Court in 

Gaborone. 

The November 2011 newsletter included an article by 

Maggie Verster on the application of twitter for law 

librarians as well as articles by Kosie Eloff and Mary 

Bruce on e-readers. In March 2012, Kallie Pauw of Juta 

sent us a contribution on the processes, procedures and 

practice relating to the making of laws. In the same issue 

Olwyn Garratt‟s article on the Bell Dewar book club 

became our first OFG contribution. 

My final newsletter in May included a paper by Helen 

Schutte of the North Gauteng High Court Library on 

various court processes and a thought-provoking piece 

by Charmaine Bertram of Norton Rose on the state of our 

profession. 

Mary Bruce and Nico Ferreira kept their loyal 

contributions up. Mary keeps us informed of the 

technological developments relevant to our profession 

and Nico‟s column “Noted Publications” keeps us up-todate 

on the latest law publications. 

With regard to distribution: The Committee continues to 

encourage the distribution of the newsletter in electronic 

format. Please remember to notify Mari Brightmore of any 

changes in email address. 

We have experienced few problems in the last year. The 

one that has had the most impact involves software 

changes within Google Groups. 

This has arisen relatively recently and one of the affected 

groups is members who wish to register two email 

addresses. Doing so has not been a problem historically 

but in the last month or two I have not been able to 

include a secondary address. Hopefully this will be 

resolved before long and I thank those who have been 

affected for their patience. 

Those who have administration rights are most affected. I 

am currently battling to access statistics so can only say 

that the number of subscribers has grown slightly over 

the last twelve months, but not by how many. 

Most software changes are associated with hiccups and 

it will hopefully not be long before the teething problems 

are rectified. 

Once again, I end with thanks to each participating 

individual for making this an efficient and productive 

service. 

NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS 

Meryl Federl (Chair) 

I have been working in the 

library and information 

management field since 1989 

after obtaining a Higher 

Diploma in Librarianship at Wits 

and have obtained wide 

experience in the academic, 

corporate law and public 

interest sectors. 

My current position is that of Information Management 

Officer at the Legal Resources Centre, a leading public 

interest litigation organisation in South Africa, which has 

played a major role in championing social justice causes 

since 1979 with offices in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape 

Town and Grahamstown. 

I am passionate about human rights litigation, advocacy 

and the dissemination of information relating to the field 

with a keen interest in promoting and developing the 

teaching of legal skills to graduates.

I am currently working as a

My work experience within the legal library profession 

extends to just over a decade and I hope to excel in my 

seat on the OSALL Committee. 

Varsha Sookdhaw (Newsletter 

Editor) 

Like a moth to a flame, was how I was 

drawn to libraries. My passion for 

reading and books was the core factor 

in my having opted to study in the 

library and information field. 

My first job was as an Abstractor at the Nampak 

Information Resource Centre. I thereafter worked in 

special libraries in the Media, Commerce, Government 

and Law sectors, with the latter being the sector in which 

I found my niche. There is no boring day in a law library 

as I am learning perpetually and am faced with constant 

challenges, which makes me feel like MacGyver on some 

days while on others, Hannibal's line from the A-Team "I 

love it when a plan comes together" comes to mind. 

visit was part of the Research Libraries Consortium 1 

Project. 

This collaborative Project was launched in 2006 and 

intends to improve the quality of library support for 

researchers and thus to enable the library sector to play 

its part fully in an eventual increase in research 

productivity in SA. 

Visits to North American research university libraries 

were a component of the Project. It enables librarians 

to experience research support as practiced there and to 

gain an understanding of how librarians interact with 

researchers and how librarians have a clear 

understanding of what the academic community is doing 

in order to provide appropriate support. 

I relocated to Johannesburg from Durban in 2010, to 

manage Evershed's Information Research Services. 

Since, OSALL has been of great assistance to me time 

and again, I accepted the post of Newsletter editor on the 

Committee so that I could give back to my profession. 

NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS 

Amanda Franken, Head of PwC‟s Library & Information 

Centre, was promoted to Associate Director. Not only is 

this a great achievement for Amanda, the first information 

professional in the financial sector to be recognised in 

this way, but it sends an important message about the 

value our profession adds to the business environment. 

Congratulations, Amanda! Your example confirms that 

the information profession is alive and well and looking 

towards the future. We celebrate with you. 

Nahum Gelber Law Library, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada 

Two weeks were spent at the Mortenson Center for 

International Library Programmes, at the University of 

Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Mortenson Center 

programme was an introduction to higher education and 

academic librarianship in the US.

Very few facets of our lives can be strictly 

compartmentalised into work or play. Software that 

we may have initially used for social or 

entertainment purposes, like Facebook or 

YouTube or Twitter, soon found application in the 

business sector. Even SARS is now utilising 

YouTube 1 as an educational tool to assist 

taxpayers – not that the forum makes taxation fun, 

but credit is due. (What a lovely ring that phrase 

has : I feel a 16pt bold emoticon coming on).

A unique feature of McGill University's Law Faculty is 

their transsystemic approach to legal education: 

students graduate with both civil law and common law 

degrees. Library visits were also made to the Osgoode 

Hall Law School Library in York, Toronto and the Brian 

Dickson Library at the University of Ottawa and the 

Supreme Court Library. 

Research support offered by North American research 

university libraries is at a much higher and deeper level 

than is the practice in South Africa. 

Although the Brand Van Zyl Law Library is small in 

comparison to law libraries visited, it has one of the best 

collections in South Africa. 

The Library can satisfy most of the patrons‟ requests 

from the collection. Areas for improvement are fully 

exploiting available technology to improve services to 

patrons and incorporating accredited legal research 

courses into the curriculum. 

1 The RLC is made up of the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosh, 

Rhodes, KwaZulu-Natal, Wits and Pretoria. These universities are 

responsible for approximately three-quarters of research output in the 

South African higher education sector.

Hype is hollow but any web service that attracts 

more traffic than LinkedIn, YouTube and Google+ 

together, and generates more referral traffic than 

Twitter is not to be sneezed at – especially when 

this happens within two years of inception. My 

previous column sniffed around the ankles of 

Pinterest as the potential for application within the 

library environment was immediately discernible, 

even if the details needed fleshing out. (Sniffing 

and sneezing : what could I have been thinking). 

A recent infographic 2 highlights trends among 

Pinterest users 3 ; interestingly, the third highest job 

title was “Education, Training and Library”. 

The American Library Association‟s ACRL will be 

hosting a live webcast later this month that focuses 

on Pinterest 4 as a “strong resource in the modern 

academic library tool box”. The notice elaborates: 

“Pinterest is important for academic and research 

libraries because of its implications for information 

usage, content sharing, service enhancements, 

and opportunities for collaboration and PR”. 

Possible applications include “marketing services 

and collections, leveraging the tool for subject 

liaison activities, utilizing Pinterest for instruction 

and orientation, optimizing online resources for use 

with Pinterest to extend their reach, addressing 

ethical use of visual information through proper 

applications and considerations, and for teaching 

and expanding information literacy skills”. 

A recent article on the use of Pinterest for 

business 5 offers many useful pointers. Anyone


considering expanding their online presence into 

this forum will benefit from Donna Moritz‟s 

suggestions but I have focused on those that 

particularly caught my attention, starting with the 

use of a company logo, keywords and links in 

setting up the account. Work with an „ideal client‟ in 

mind with a view to meeting their needs. Copyright 

is a two-way channel: one is reminded to be aware 

of ethics when identifying sources and to consider 

using watermarks to protect the integrity of one‟s 

own material. Pins should include a variety of 

images such as infographics and text images. 

(Infographics are described as “a graphic, eyecatching 

visual representation of information, data 

or knowledge” and are a popular visual tool at 

present). The article refers to a number of products 

to assist in the creation of graphics. Keep a 

balance between one‟s own content and 

information from other sources. Make an events 

board. These catch phrases should resonate : 

“become the go-to-source for information” ; “add 

value and engage”. 

For a very nifty example of how Pinterest can be 

utilised, visit http://pinterest.com/barackobama/. 

I still find internal search results a bit disconcerting. 

Compare the results from “law society” (somewhat 

haphazard results) with “kwazulu-natal” which lead 

me to websites ranging from holiday 

accommodation to the philharmonic orchestra. 

These are of course entirely dependent on how 

Pinterest users collate and link their pins but we 

are sure to see huge improvements as people 

become familiar with the site. 

My seasonal wish is that the potential fires you up 

as much as it has me.
