Formyl methyl was generated by photodissociation <strong>of</strong> methyl vinyl ether, at 298<br />

undergoes rapid electron rearrangement to the lower energy form (ca. 16 kcal/mol lower)<br />

formyl methyl structure. Kinetic studies on this formyl methyl radical with 02 show a<br />

, relative to those reportedly for acetyl radical,<br />

This suggests that formyl methyl radicals produced in<br />

experiments on C1 or OH reaction with acetaldehyde will react about one tenth as fast<br />

with 02, probably requiring a small or no correction to kinetic data <strong>of</strong> the faster acetyl +<br />

02 reactions. It also suggests that a barrier to the association may exist or that there is a<br />

very low well depth for the formyl methyl + 02 adduct.
