Jennifer Kimball Nadeau became
president of the White Bear
Lake Area Educational Foundation
on July 1. She succeeds Kim
Schoonover, who now is serving as
past president.
Jenny Nadeau was elected to the
WBLAEF Board of Directors in
2006, and was named vice president
for community relations in 2009.
During her six years on the Board
she has held several leadership positions,
co-chairing both the fall 2009
“Hats Off to Education” and the
spring 2011 “Dine, Donate...and
Dance!” fundraisers. She also is involved
with Holiday Angels and The
Closet. —and in designing the new
WBLAEF logo.
A 1983 graduate of White Bear
Lake Area High School, Jenny Kimball
and Kile Nadeau (class of ’80)
were married in 1985. Their four
children are also WBLAHS alumni:
Jess ’03, Becca ’06, David ’08, and
Daniel ’11. Jess and Richie Miehe are
the parents of Lucy, class of 2028.
Becca is married to Seth Engberg,
The vice presidential vacancies
prompted by Kimball’s promotion
and Lori Swanson’s retirement from
the Foundation Board have been
filled by Dawn Hank and Heidi Bro-
Mary Dahle Joins Board as Ryan, Swanson, and Gehrenbeck Exit
Mary Dahle retired in
June after 38 years of
teaching Spanish courses
at all levels in White Bear
Lake secondary schools,
principally at South Campus.
On July 1 she
became the newest
member of the
WBLAEF Board of
Directors.
H o n o r e d a s
White Bear Lake’s
Teacher of the Year
in 2010, Dahle has received
considerable recognition
within and beyond
the classroom. One example:
every year since
the annual Excellence
Event was initiated in
2000, she has been chosen
to partner with a
graduating senior.
Closing out their WB-
LAEF Board membership
on June 30 were Dudley
Mary Dahle
Ryan, Lori Swanson, and
David Gehrenbeck, whose
combined service on the
Board totals 27 years.
Dudley Ryan, a 1974
graduate of Mariner High
School, joined the
WBLAEF Board in
2003—and was
elected its vice
president in 2004.
A year later he succeeded
Dan Foote
as president—and
continued in that role for
four years (2005-2009).
Thereupon he became
past president for a year,
and then resumed that
position in 2011, after
Michael Fleming (president
2009-2010, past
president 2010-2011) retired
from the Board after
13 years of service.
Lori Swanson joined
the WBLAEF Board in
2006, becoming actively
engaged in many committees.
In 2009 she was
named vice
president
phy, both of whom joined the
Board this year on Feb. 8.
Dawn Hank is the new vice
president for development. Her
professional background is in human
resources management and
insurance. She is a member of the
local Toastmasters Club, and has
volunteered for many District 624
projects. She and her husband,
Tim, have two children at Sunrise
Park Middle School.
Heidi Brophy is the new vice
president for community relations.
As North Central district manager
for U.S. Bank, she maintains her
primary office at the WBL branch
on Clark Ave. She volunteers to
lead the junior achievement program
at Lincoln Elementary
School, and played a significant
role in the district’s strategic planning
process in 2010-2011. She
and her husband, Scott, have two
children, one at Lincoln, the other
at Central Middle School.
A 1949 WBHS graduate,
David Gehrenbeck was
invited to join the Foundation
Board in 2000. In
high school he had edited
the school newspaper,
Bear Tracks, and his interest
in journalism did
not abate when he became
a church organist and college
music professor. Editing
the WBLAEF News
became an opportunity he
couldn’t resist, and while
having retired after 12
years on the Board, he will
continue to edit the News—
at least in the near future.
2 WHITE BEAR LAKE AREA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION NEWS Summer 2012
O N M Y M I N D
A Tribute to Kim Schoonover
By JENNY NADEAU
President, White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation
“An individual has not started living until he can
rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic
concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
“Unless someone like you carries a whole awful
lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
Familiar quotes? Perhaps you recognize one of
these lines from Martin Luther King Jr.
or Dr. Seuss.
Kim Schoonover brought these very sentiments
to life during her tenure as our Foundation president
the past two years. Whether hearing it in a conversation
with Kim or seeing it in her e-mail signature,
one could always sense that she lived her commitment
to serve humanity and to care an awful lot.
Kim’s time as president was spent working tirelessly
toward continuing the great works of our
organization. From telling our story to community
organizations to greeting our supporters at our
fundraising events, Kim represented our Foundation
with energy and grace. But perhaps the thing Kim
takes most pride in is the conception and creation of
The Closet. This community clothing “shop” enables
District 624 families who are in need to select
clothing, coats, boots, and shoes free of charge. Kim
has generously created a warm, inviting atmosphere
where families feel safe and welcome.
Thank you, Kim, for your dedication, your
motivation, and your steady leadership.
Kim will remain on our Board of Directors in the
role of past president, where she will continue to
inspire us all, as she reminds us that “change cannot
wait for some other people or generation . . . it starts
with us.”
‘Going for Gold’ Staff Appeal Campaign Kicks Off
Taking its cue from
the Summer 2012 Olymp
i c s , t h e W B L A E F
launched its annual staff
appeal Aug. 28 as all District
624 personnel filed
into the WBLArea Community
Auditorium Aug.
28 for the opening fall
convocation.
This year’s theme,
Dawn Hank
JENNY AND FRIEND. The
bear’s identity is unknown,
but he knew he had a good
catch: the new president of
the WBLAEF, in front of the
WBL Area Community
Auditorium on Aug. 28.
SPRING 2013
FUNDRAISER
DATE IS SET
Details still are
obscure, but planning
for the WB-
LAEF’s annual spring
fundraiser is already
under way. (Who can
forget last April’s
highly successful
“Unite to Write”
campaign dinner?)
But do save the
date: Saturday, April
20, 2013. And keep
watching the News.
GREETERS AT CONVO. Championing WBLAEF causes and
opportunities Aug. 28 at the school district’s fall staff
convocation were these Foundation Board members, from
left, Ken Galloway, Nancy Roth, Jenny Nadeau, Carol
McFarlane, Dawn Hank, Kim Schoonover, Lara York, Connie
Dickson, Dave Potts, and office manager Lisa Lindvall.
Access to Application Forms
Now Available All Year Long
Year-round access to
all WBLAEF grant and
fellowship application
forms is now a reality,
Connie Dickson, vice
president for programs
and allocations, has announced.
While various deadlines
apply, the improved
access will enable educators
to complete the applications
at their own
convenience via the website
www.wblaef.org.
Also to be mentioned
is the availability of the
Eugene D. and Kathleen J.
Johnson Student Enrichment
Scholarship for District
624 students in
grades 6–12 who desire to
participate in activities
beyond the classroom in
the fields of journalism,
writing, speaking, musical
performance, and composition.
Application forms for
this scholarship are also
available on the website
www.wblaef.org.
“Going for Gold: One
Champion at a Time,”
was emblazoned on colorful
bookmarks that were
handed out to everybody
upon arrival.
These bookmarks specifically
identify WBLAEF
grants and fellowships
available to all educators,
namely Brosious Teaching
Grants, Glasrud Fellowships,
and Ryan Family
Elementary Arts
Grants. Procedures for
applying for each of these
are identified, as are the
total funds available for
individuals or teams.
The annual staff appeals
have produced remarkable
results in recent
years—testimony to the
support of WBL educators
for the mission and
programs of the WB-
LAEF. Visits by Board
members to all schools
will be made as the fall
term progresses.
Why Join the WBLAAA? Here Are 10 Good Reasons
Besides feeling good
about it, here are 10 reasons
for becoming an active
member in the WB-
LAAA:
10: Saying thanks for our
school years.
For four of the six
downtown Marketfests
this summer, members of
the WBLAAA peopled a
booth along Banning Ave.,
reviving a tradition that
had languished in recent
years.
Hundreds—perhaps,
thousands?—of Marketfesters
strolled by, many
of them pausing to interact
with the those behind
the counter.
The main thrust of
these exchanges has been
to acquaint WB alumni
with the WBLAAA, and to
invite those who yet are
not bona fide members to
become such. Lifetime
dues are now $25—an
incredible bargain for 21st
century alumni!
The really good news
is that more than a dozen
alumni took the plunge
and joined at Marketfest:
John Aitken ’67 • Tom
Burke ’71 • Paul Chapin ’71 •
Terri Domreese ’72 • Evelyn
Chapin Duvall ’76 • Kurt
9: Remembering those
who have gone on.
8: Helping sponsor worthy
alumni projects.
7: Keeping up with school
activities and programs.
6: Locating old friends
are now members of the
