BLUES
1. Whole Lotta Rosie 2. Which Way 3. True Love 4. Brand New Cadillac 5. Runaway 6. He's Tuff 7. Little Green 8. On est des Mooons
With more than 300 gigs throughout 5 years in France, Benelux and Switzerland, Alexx & The Mooonshiners is obviously a stage band. They were on top form when they captured this live
album, gathering their favourite European recordings, 8 overpowerful gems loaded with fun. It swings and grooves big time. Between Blues, Rock 'n' Roll et Rockabilly, the band's second album
smells of sweat, powder and adrenaline - Play it loud ! In 2005, Lionel Riss, blues guitarist trying to find the way, met Alex Wokenschroll, French/scottish singer, a huge 70s hard rock fan and a
screamer in various punk rock bands. They'll soon give birth to Alexx & The Mooonshiners. Straight after, they found their bass player on the Internet, David Braud, fresh out of Conservatoire
de Paris where he was given double-bass lessons. His parents are both professional musicians (mother pianist, father sax) and his father-in-law (Clément Bailly) once was Magma's second
drummer. David used to be more into Jazz and Metal, and had never played a single blues note before the Mooons. With David, the band is getting complete as the drummers have always come
and go : the MoOons are in fact a 3-piece band + the drummer of the day. The style of the Mooonshiners is a multicoloured cocktail : some blues (probably the cement of their music), but also
CD DFG 8543 AMOR Even After That
BLUES-ROCK
Slide guitarist & songwriter Dave Arcari's alt.blues sounds owe as much to trash country, punk and rockabilly as they do pre-war Delta blues and have been showcased via six internationally-
acclaimed solo CD releases. Nobody's Fool was recorded in Glasgow, Scotland and Helsinki, Finland. The new album features collaborations with Finnish musicians Juuso Haapasalo (bass) and
Honey Aaltonen (drums) and Scottish fiddle player Jamie Wilson. As well as Arcari's trademark National slide guitar playing and original material, Nobody's Fool presents another side of
Arcari with 'normal' guitar and some material from key traditional, geographic and musical influences. Arcari's festival appearances include Glastonbury (UK), BluesAlive (Czech Republic &
Poland shows), Moulin Blues (Netherlands), The Great British R&B Festival and Peer Festival (Belgium). A series of shows with folks including Steve Earle, Alabama 3, Seasick Steve, Toby
Keith and Jon Spencer along with his relentless UK and European tour schedule have established Arcari as a formidable international solo performer who is fast building a media reputation as a
ON TOUR
Tracks: Ball & Chain / Ain't My Style / Get Up, Get Over It / Prohibition / The Road Is My Religion / Secret Agent / Come On / Don't Walk, Run ! / Castaway / Back To You / Are You Lonely /
Guitar Town / Rest In Paradise
Prohibition captures Ashton in his finest rocking blues performance to date. He blends the essences of Mississippi, New Orleans and Texas blues, 60s surf, British 70s rock and no-holds-barred
Australian kick-ass boogie. Every element of the blues is encapsulated here and played with amazing dexterity and power. Old Strats, Teles, National resonators, Fender tweed amps, fuzz boxes
and his ancient Echoplex are driven to the extreme, guaranteed to satisfy the most discriminating taste in guitar-led blues. Ashton dives and ducks from the wild frenetic slide guitar featured in
the Rory Gallagher classic track Secret Agent to the gentle, graceful, emotional, soulful playing in his Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute Rest In Paradise. Each of the 12 tracks on Prohibition delivers a
take-no-prisoners approach, with 11 self-penned titles. Chris Glen and Ted McKenna (Ian Gillan, Michael Schenker Group, Tear Gas and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band) accompany
Ashton. Ted also played and recorded with Rory Gallagher from 1978 to 1981, the Greg Lake Band (with Gary Moore), Womack and Womack and Amos Garrett. Chris played with John
Bjørn Berge is a true virtuoso. Those who've seen him live can testify to the man's astounding mastery of the 12-string guitar, to the bewildering fluency of his slide work. A mix between a
steam train at full speed and a four-piece band. "Back Wood" gives proof that blues, heavy metal and country music share roots that have spawned tasty fruits in the North as well as the South!
Anyone with an avid interest in the traditional folk music of North America knows that Louisiana has long been, and still is, a place where the old styles survive and thrive and new sounds are
born. Its rich history of African, French, Spanish, Caribbean and Native-American influences has gifted the world with a unique culture that no catastrophe, natural or man-made, can ever
destroy. Arriving, mid-September, at Dirk Powell's Cypress House Studio in Pont Breaux, Louisiana, with a satchel of new songs, I felt the thrill of great expectations. The last time I'd met up
with Dirk was back in January when we both had been invited to be a part of the BBC's "Celtic Connections"- filmed in the Scottish countryside. That was the first time we'd had the opportunity
to playmusic together and we really hit it off. The original idea to record in Louisiana was hatched even earlier during a meeting with Matt Greenhill from Folklore Productions. His many
talents include getting like-minded musicians together in interesting combinations. Anyway, knowing that I was looking for a versatile multi-instrumentalist to record with alongside harmonica
Eric is at the top of his game on stage, giving performances often met with standing ovations, and all blues lovers concur in saying that an Eric Bibb concert is a truly unique experience. France's
FIP Radio recorded two of these magical moments, on March 13 and December 2, 2008, so Eric's fans could share the freshness and spontaneity of his music in the form of this double Digipak
CD. The first concert (CD1) presents Eric with his full band (including guitar, bass and drums). For the second performance (CD2), he is backed by his regular drummer and Amar Sundy on
electric guitar. CD2 is enhanced by a 20-minute video taped live that night, with additional interview excerpts. This "Live at FIP" double set is bound to become a milestone in Bibb's career. It
shows the full extent of his artistry as he glides gracefully over a repertoire made of his strongest material from the last fifteen years.
The Blues of Neal Black is a Blues of true life stories . It wasn't something he learned from a video clip or read from a book. Like the real Bluesmen, Neal black has lived his Blues : true stories
of hard times in Texas (after a "disagreement" with the local Sheriff and Judge), loneliness in New York City, homesick in Mexico ... The Blues of Neal Black is sung with a voice that's
somewhere between Tom Waits and Howling Wolf after a carton of Marlboro. The Blues of Neal Black is colored with dark rage, sweet melancholy and drenched in smoking guitarwork that
burns like a Tequila Sunrise. "Handful of Rain" is Neal Black's 5th album released on Dixiefrog, this new album is filled with his lyrics that bite and scratch at your soul, and opens doors of long
forgotten shadows in the back of your mind. Special guest musicians include : Gib Wharton/Pedal Steel Guitar ( ex-Van Morrison, Holmes Brothers), LLoyd Herman/Drums (ex- Gatemouth
Brown), Val Cronk/Bass & Piano (ex- Augie Meyers) and Fred Chapellier (acoustic Guitar & Bass). Release date : 2007
Captain Luke from Winston-Salem, North Carolina sings in a basso-profundo voice that conjures the deep blues soul of Reverend Gary Davis and the velvet of Dean Martin. Captain Luke
(Luther Mayer) was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1926. He grew up on his grandparent's farm in nearby Clinton, where he followed the furrows barefoot behind the plow as his Uncle
Jesse worked and sang to his mule. At fourteen he moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. with his mother and sister, where the exigencies of the situation carried him increasingly out of school and into
the work force. Luke was blessed with a deep natural baritone and he began quite early to carry the lowparts in the local church. Later, accompanied by whatever instrumentation available,
Luke used to travel in a wide circle from Winston (very often with Guitar Gabriel), performing in drink-houses, the social hubs of the African-American community in the North Carolina
Piedmont. Luke's music and art are rooted firmly in the African-American working class of the Carolina Piedmont and the mystique of his message refers continually to the blues experience.
BLUES
TRACKS: Another man done gone / Wayward gal / Don't get trouble in your mind / Black eyes blues / Georgie buck / Earl king / Jack O'diamonds / Short life of trouble / Po'Lazarus / Rickett's
hornpipe / Cornbread and butter beans / Bye-bye policeman / Real old mountain dew / Sittin' on top of the world / Banjo dreams / Jalidong / Gambia
Born two years ago of the reunion in North Carolina of three young African-American players (the oldest member of the trio just turned thirty), the Carolina Chocolate Drops are rapidly
growing into somewhat of a phenomenon on the American blues circuit these days. Armed with 5-string banjos, fiddles, guitars, jugs, kazoos, spoons and various other percussive "instruments,"
the CCD revisit the jug-band and Black string-band music of the '20s and '30s with the zest of the most energetic hip-hoppers and the acumen of old-time music pioneers. Although they remain
faithful to the tradition, they have an atypical way of articulating their own artistic feelings. The Drops prove once again that music can help us better understand history. Although old-time
music mainly survived through the recordings made by White artists between the wars, its debt to the Black musicians of the early 20th Century is huge: the banjo, largely adopted by white
farmers and miners in the Appalachians, was an instrument of African ancestry; as for the fiddle of the European settlers, it was largely influenced by its one-string, highly percussive cousin
It was almost with awe that guitarist Fred Chapellier embarked on this vibrant homage to the genius of sixstring guru Roy Buchanan. For this exploration into Roy's repertoire, Fred sought the
help of ace musicians-including Billy Price, longtime vocalist with the Buchanan band, Neal Black, Tom Principato, Miguel M., Gib Wharton and Lightfoot Rivet-while production chores were
handled by none other than Jean Roussel, the man who produced one of Roy's last effort, "You're Not Alone." A winner! Fred Chapellier is not a newcomer in the world of blues, with two
previous albums to his credit and numerous appearances alongside major stars at various festivals. He has worked extensively with drummer Tony Coleman (formerly of the B.B. King band),
Neal Black, Nina Van Horn and Lorenzo Sanchez. His 'Tribute to Roy Buchanan' is destined to become one of the best electric blues sets of the year, one that will get accolades from Roy
and Paris, she met Jean-Jacques Milteau (famous blues harp player) who put her immediately into his band. She released her first album " Why Do You Run " two years ago. Here is, now, her
traditional Native American music and folk. Praise for her first album was unanimous. "Tuscarora Nation Blues" surprised critics with its original magic in a musical genre where imitation
reigns unchallenged. On her first album, Pura Fe' sang how slavery brought together blacks and Indians from the South (a lot of blues artists share and take pride in the same dual heritage),
bringing us the age-old message
Larry Garner's new album "Blues For Sale" is another fine collaboration of his everyday blues. With ten CDs to his credit and thousands of blues miles traveled, Larry is no doubt one of the top
contemporary bluesmen of this era. "Blues For Sale" proves that he is still in contact with the world and has his finger on the pulse of the people. With this new record, Larry still exemplifies
what a true bluesman is all about and in this high tech over produced blues world that we live in Larry has managed to find that happy medium once again! Born in New Orleans, in 1952, Larry
Garner grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, discovering the blues with Slim Harpo and Jimmy Reed. First playing the guitar in a gospel quartet, he then got his influences from Jimi Hendrix and
the pop music of the sixties. While staying close to the roots of blues, Larry Garner crafts a distinctive sound. His skills as a guitarist and a songwriter, approaching a wide range of themes,
establish him as one of the most gifted blues artists of his generation. He has recorded for JSP, Gitanes/Verve and Ruf Records but, unfortunately, because of health problems he has stayed
Amos Garrett - Truly one of the worlds most distinctive guitarists - is back, with his first CD since 1996. Not only that but it's his first Acoustic album since his collaboration with Geoff Muldaur
in the 1970's . This fine musician has been praised enthusiastically by the likes of Stevie Wonder, The late Chet Atkins, Richard Thompson and many others with whom he has recorded, (a list
that ranges from Maria Muldaur to Anne Murray, from Paul Butterfield to Ian Tyson, and from Bonnie Raitt to k.d. lang). Produced by Juno Award winner and multi-instrumentalist Ken
Whiteley. Classic Songs from Hoagy Carmichael, Jelly Roll Morton and Leadbelly, and new material from Amos, both Ken and Chris Whiteley, Paul Geremia and Jeff Gutcheon. Amos has
festival dates set in Canada and Europe this summer, and will undertake two major club tours in Canada. Rare acoustic performances from an artist rightly famous an electric guitarist.
..In the fantastic universe of poet, writer and blues artist Gashouse Dave, Tom Waits and Jules Vernes are patrons of the same bars, while Bogart drops in at a club on the East Side every night to
listen to Charlie Parker play. A champion of the type writer and a guitarist of cosmic blues, the visionary poet lets his eyes focus on a world for which he seems the only one to possess the key
to the door.
Gashouse Dave considers himself a bluesman and a writer, and the American press unanimously salutes his writing, qualified as "creative and surprising". Dave Shorey traces his roots back as
much to Raymond Chandler, Chester Himes, Jack Kerouac or Spielberg as to John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed, Albert King or Howlin' Wolf. The fans of his music, knowing the impact of his
guitar in concert, are surprised at the discretion with which he plays his favourite in the studio. The reason for this is that Dave considers that the instrument should serve the song, and not vice
« Blues trip » is a « back to the roots » album. Dave plays electric and acoustic (dobro) and propose his new songs (as usually) but also some interesting covers coming from Blind Lemon
Jefferson (« Please, See That My Grave Is Kept Clean ») or John Lee Hooker (« Highway 13 »), and the legendary « You Took My Money, Now You're Gone). Nevertheless, the Gashouse
Dave's music reminds us, as always, a kind of strange Hollywood atmosphere with old fashioned journalists in smoky bars, Underwood typewriters, and old Humphrey Bogart movies.
Ein kanadischer Journalist schrieb dazu: "'Love In The City' may well be the best
Rolling Stones song that Jagger and Richards have never heard." "Something Ain't Right" hat ein 60's R'n'B-Feel und entstand gemeinsam mit Songwriter-Legende John Capek, der u.a. Top Ten
Hits für Joe Cocker, Toto, Cher, Diana Ross und Rod Stewart (Rhythm of My Heart) schrieb. "Hey Juanita"
For his 10th album, Different Views, blues rocker David Gogo definitely had some unique sights to inspire him during the recording process. Instead of the usual confines of your typical
recording studio, the bulk of the album was recorded at his home - overlooking the 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest that make up the Gogo family compound. The keyboard tracks were
recorded at Rick Hopkins' (Colin James, Barney Bentall) home overlooking breath-taking Lions Bay, British Columbia. The album is produced by Russell Broom (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The
Dudes, Wil) with guests Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason), roots diva Carolyn Mark, and jazz great Phil Dwyer popping in at various times. With the drums set up in the foyer and guitar
amps in the laundry room, the Gogo house was filled with music and good food. At times, Gogo wasn't sure if he was a musician or a caterer! The fact that the clock wasn't ticking, along with
Our chicano from Chicago comes back effectively, with a real agressive, punchy and groovy blues/rock. The record is clearly committed against the official political choices of the present
American government.
Tino Gonzales is to Blues what Carlos Santana is to Rock: a fabulous and uniquely gifted guitar player. The great Latin Blues showman grew up in Chicago and gained fame as a sideman playing
for a wide array of people including BB King, Etta James, Willie Nelson, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Charlie Musselwhite and Robert Cray. He has won many devoted fans in the US and Europe
Marie Knight used to sing with Sister Rosetta Tharpe during 20 years (the soprano and lead guitarist was Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the alto was Marie Knight). The Reverend Gary Davis, Marie
Knight and Sister Rosetta Tharpe had all played gospel music in New York City in the '40s and '50s, but they moved in completely different circles. While Knight and Tharpe were having hits
on the R&B charts, Davis was singing on Harlem street corners for tips. Fifty-five years later, the 78-year-old Marie Knight is still in terrific voice and has just recorded an album of songs by
the Reverend Gary Davis. To make Davis's songs come to life, it was necessary to find a musician who could handle the intricate harmonies and push-and-pull syncopation of Davis's guitar
picking. Larry Campbell, known for playing lead guitar - as well as fiddle, steel guitar, mandolin and banjo - in Bob Dylan's band from 1997 through 2004, was the man! Marie Knight says "I
listened carefully to the Rev. Gary Davis material, and some of the songs were very touching, but I wanted to do it my own way. I liked the songs but I had to do the arrangements the way they
Himself from the Métis nation -a distinct culture of his mixed Cree aboriginal and European ancestry- Wayne Lavallee is beholden to the spirit of his Métis ancestors, a spirit that embraces
freedom, and a fierce self-determination that is not dictated by government and boundaries. Lavallee roams from Indian chants to blues to rock to reggae with a sense of artistic freedom that
transcends classification, leaving you with the distinct sensation that you've just crossed paths with an unusual singer-songwriter, and a major one at that. Yet what makes Lavallee so atypical is
his outstanding ability to express his communion with the essence of nature in a progressive manner. Based on his haunting melodic approach, the 2006 winner of the "Best Aboriginal
Songwriter" award of the Canadian Folk Music Society creates a contemporary take on Native mysticism without reneging his own political agenda. Clearly, Lavallee's music is that of a
survivor. That he is able to turn it into a tool for global fraternity is proof that the old fighting spirit of his ancestors is still very much alive. His sheer poetic force is a lesson in artistry we are
much to be thankful for.
Since he started playing the guitar, Lightnin' Guy felt attracted to the slide guitar. First influenced by Chris Whitley and later blown away by Hound Dog Taylor it became clear that this was his
path to walk. Even though he incorporated the soul of the traditional slide guitar players as Fred McDowell, Bukka White, Elmore James... He also got inspired by contemporary artists like John
Little Pink was born on July 13, 1954, in South Carolina. His father, Pink Anderson, a blues legend, raised him, teaching him the same Piedmont blues style, the same techniques he possessed
(old school, rural blues, Southern blues.). Blues has always been a part of Little Pink's life whether he wanted it to be or not. There were times when he felt the blues weren't for him. He recalled
the 1960's saying, "I'm sitting here playing this stupid music." Times have changed, however, and so have his attitudes toward blues music. ".now forty years later, I'm sitting here playing this
stupid music and enjoying it." Little Pink's life wasn't a fairy tale by any means. In 1972, he was arrested for armed robbery and spent seven years in jail. Many of his friends also, got caught
up in drugs and alcohol. Before to go in jail, didn't seem to be a priority for him "Well to be honest, for me, it was just a quick way to get a woman and few dollars." In 2005, Little Pink had a
stroke. Afterwards, his life began a downward spiral. As things got worse, Little Pink's health got worse as well. "The doctors told me told me I was a diabetic. it explained a whole lot of what
Wicked world 10. Know down on your door 11. Just another memory
With Ball & Chain, McMahan stands on the edge of a new Southern Rock revolution. McMahan's deep, booming voice is perfectly appropriate for the material he's performing, easily rising
above the ringing mix of blazing guitars and manic percussion. Once again recording as a trio, with drummer Perkins and bassist Kyle Miller, McMahan has opted for a more stripped-down
sound on Ball & Chain. His growth as a wordsmith is obvious, as well, in songs like the rollicking " Way Of The World ", the bluesy " The Long Haul " (sounding a lot like the Dusters of old) or
the Stonesish title cut, " Ball & Chain ", a collaboration with fellow Nashville talent Tommy Womack. " Ten Years Ago " rips and roars out of your speakers like a raging bull while McMahan
closes the album with some delicious six-string work on "Just Another Memory.
The "Soul Conversation" project revisits blues, soul, folk and rock sounds with flair and originality. JJ Milteau's new album introduces two first-class African-American vocalists, Michael
Robinson and Ron Smyth, with the added attraction of JJ's long time guitar associate, Manu Galvin. In addition to several original compositions penned by various members of the group, this set
showcases unconventional readings of classics by the likes of Curtis Mayfield, J.B. Lenoir, Stephen Stills and the Jagger/Richards duet.
He falls in love with the harmonica in the sixties after listening to the records of various folk and rock artists. A trip to the US gives him an opportunity to try his luck first-hand with the blues, and
he launches into a musical career at the end of the 1970s, at first as a sideman with various leading French. The release in 1989 of his first solo album, "Blues Harp", marks the start of his career
as a bandleader. In 1992 he receives his first Victoire de la Musique (the equivalent of a Grammy in France) for the album "Explorer". A major change takes place in 2001 with the "Memphis"
Relentlessly inquisitive, the European harp master has much more to offer than sheer technique. Behind his instrumental skills, JJ has both feeling and spirit: in Black America, they call it soul. At
garnered him a solid fan base over the past 20 years.Commenting on his return to recording and performing, Kenny said: "With all the tragedy and darkness I've been through in the past three
BLUES
Tracks: Blues man on the run / Missy Dee / Swam thang / Mississippi rising / Conversation breakdown / Hold over me / Memories of a good time / Contradiction / Dreams of a blues man
Extrem geil ~ Nublues erscheint nun also endlich in Deutschland.
Guter Blues. Gute Pferde, die da reiten. Verwirrung. Warum nicht? (SOA) in MUSICoutlook
Nublues is a perfect example of the blues surviving in the hip-hop era. This British band mixes John Lee Hooker type riffs with urban beats "à la" Wu-Tang Clan. At a time when we have to
rely on film-makers like Wim Wenders or Clint Eastwood to remind us of the force and truth contained in these forms of expression, Nublues is a healthy reminder of the ties between the blues,
This British band mixes John Lee Hooker type riffs with urban beats "à la" Wu-Tang Clan. At a time when we have to rely on film-makers like Wim Wenders or Clint Eastwood to remind us of
the force and truth contained in these forms of expression, Nublues is a healthy reminder of the ties between the blues, the Mississippi delta and the urban energy of rap. Nublues were formed in
London 2003 by producer/guitarist Ramon Goose who recruited singer/rapper Jay Nicholls, bassist Ed Van Der Mark and drummer Paul Francis. Nublues have pioneered their own blues and
hip hop infused rock and roll and continue to do so with their brand new album "Snow On The Tracks" long awaited after the triumphant debut album "Dreams Of A Blues Man". Nublues was
discovered by Grammy Award-winning artist Chris Thomas King, known to many for his performance in O' Brother, but well known to blues lovers as a great performer in his own right. When
King signed Nublues to his Louisiana-based label 21st Century Blues Records for America, he made them the first UK blues act to sign to a US label in over 20 years. Guitarist Ramon Goose
has produced and worked with some of the last remaining traditional bluesmen from the Mississippi Delta - these experiences add depth and authenticity to the band and make up the unique
Soul of a dead man
Born in Carleton in the Gaspé region of Quebec (Canada), Pat the White has become known in a remarkably short time as a seasoned blues guitarist and signer. His second recording "The
Quebec City Sessions" has been critically acclaimed and has received admiration from fans for his legendary tribute to the Allman Brothers classic The Whipping Post. After hundreds of sold
out shows, festivals and television appearances, Pat the White has earned a numerous and loyal fan base that is growing every week. It is no wonder that he has won The Male Artist of the Year
(2003) and Best Performance (2004) at the Lys Blues Gala in Montreal. Pat the White is accompanied by some of the best musicians in Canada. When they play, they are always asked to
come and play again. They have made two special trips to Mississippi where they have worked with some of the most important blues players of the Delta. Pat the White and his band are a
must to see and experience live !...
CD DFG 8609 PERRY, BILL Don't Know Nothin' About love
BLUES-ROCK
TRACKS: Let me love you / My baby loves to dance / Hello Joséphine / I don't know nothin' bout love / Ball of confusion / Leavin' home / Down in New Orléans / She's a burglar / Accuse me of
lyin' / Can't afford to die / Waitin' for my luck to change / Are you experienced
Here is the new Bill Perry album « Don't Know Nothin' About Love ». Like the previous one, this record is produced by the New York legend and postmodern blues master Popa Chubby and
the Bill Perry's guitar ferocity, gutsy vocals, and go-for-broke intensity has been totally harnessed and captured on tape.
Bill Perry ranks among the best of a new generation of blues performers. He's a stunning guitar master, or, as Guitar One put it, a "six-string superman more powerful than a locomotive." He's
also an intense, highly expressive singer and a superb songwriter. His music reflects his New York City sensibility - passionate and somewhat menacing.
Bill plays a robust blues with strong characteristics of rock and equal soul and folk influences and his music sounds also a bit psychedelic, in the way that the 70's rock of Cream and Jimi Hendrix
that inspired Perry can be called psychedelic blues. On stage, Bill earned a reputation as a mesmerizing performer who plays with passion and excitement.
Peterson - Armed And Dangerous 17. Magic Slim - Sunny Road Blues
100% groove and soul! 5 unreleased tracks, just recorded by Lucky Peterson, served hot with the finest cuts of three fellow blues stars. Electric blues at its best. A must! During the nineties,
Lucky Peterson and Joe Louis Walker have been at the forefront of a new generation of bluesmen who added a solid dose of funk and groove to the celebrated Chicago blues, creating a new and
exciting form of contemporary music. Here you will find both of them alongside the Hendrix influenced prodigy that was Bill Perry who left us too soon and the Mississippi born Magic Slim, a
veteran roots musician whose energy and roughness denotes a real rock 'n' roll attitude. This is a very coherent compilation mixing unreleased tracks by Lucky Peterson, just out of the studio,
though musically easily in the same league as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and other great U.S. acts, Point Blank didn't seem to enjoy the same acclaim as these other bands. They were
formed in the mid seventies by guitarists Rusty Burns and Kim Davis, vocalist John O'Daniel, drummer Buzzy Gruen and bassist Phillip Petty. Between 1976 and 1981 they released a total of
six albums. Point Blank was a band that toured constantly averaging more than 250 one nighters annually and lived by the adage "When the Going gets tough - the tough go touring." After
musical differences, management difficulties and other conflicts the band decided to shut it down.
"POINT BLANK IS THE GREAT UNSUNG SOUTHERN ROCK BAND,AND THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN DENIED THE SPOTLIGHT FOR TWO REASONS - ONE, THEY WERE FROM
Point Blank may not have enjoyed the same level of fame as Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet, but it's always remained among the top ten celebrated groups of Southern Rock. All those that
discovered this handful of restive Texans at the end of the 1970s have kept a vivid souvenir and some of their rare albums are still being traded among fans at costs much higher than their
original release prices.
Point Blank has been reunited 2 years ago (2007) and their live ("Reloaded") which was released around their european tour made a lot of their fans more than happy.
The new studio album ("Fight on!") - the first one since 27 years years! - has been produced and arranged by the historical Point Blank guitarist, Rusty Burns, who has also written six of the
eleven songs of the album (three by himself and three with John O'Daniel, the legendary voice of the band). Phillip Petty, the bass player, gave a hand also for some other songs. With "Fight
on!", the band is still at the top !
Zwar beginnt er mit dem Standard "Nobody loves you when you're down and
The distinctive voice for many years of the Roy Buchanan band meets a renowned and incendiary blues-rock guitarist of French origin, along with special guests Otis Clay and Mark Wenner of
The Nighthawks. Night Work, by Pittsburgh-based blue-eyed soul singer Billy Price and French blues guitarist Fred Chapellier, was released in Europe in March 2009 on DixieFrog Records.
Fans of Price's work in the 1970s with guitarist Roy Buchanan are going to love Night Work. Roy is one of Fred's biggest influences as a guitarist; in fact, Fred's last CD for DixieFrog was titled A
Tribute to Roy Buchanan, and Billy Price appeared on that CD as a guest vocalist. Mark Wenner, harmonica player of the Nighthawks, plays on three songs--the title song, written by our friend
Mike Sweeney from Pittsburgh; a new version of "Who You're Working For," which Price recorded with Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band on the Free at Last CD in 1988; and a new
song written by Price, Sweeney, Sally Tiven, and Jon Tiven titled "The Wrong Woman." Also making a guest appearance on the new CD, singing Al Green's "Love and Happiness," is Otis Clay.
PRINCIPATO, TOM Guitar Gumbo
PRESSE-TIPP
other special guests. The new album showcases nine songs (including six originals) that demonstrate the breadth of Tom's musical influences ranging from blues, jazz and rock, to funk, reggae
and New Orleans sounds. The three covers include a jazzy workout of Jimmy Smith's "8 Counts for Rita," a cooking take on J.J. Cale's "Lies," and a new version of Louis Jordan's "Fish Fry" that
brings funk and Jamaican flavors to this R&B classic, a long-time staple of the band's live shows.
blues-based album that will appeal to all roots music fans. And, needless to say, the guitar playing offers 10 more good reasons why Duke's won the Handy Award for Blues Guitarist of the
year three times over the past four years, and why he was International Blues Artist of the Year at the Canadian Maple Blues Awards. Duke has, however, always been more than a blues
player, and his affection for other kinds of roots music shines through every track on this new release....he accompanies Jay McShann at the Monterey Jazz Festival in California.
BLUES-ROCK
Tracks: Do The Memphis Grind / Gambler's Blues / Sunday Mornin / One Way Out / I'll Do Anything But Work / Down Along The Cove / Danny Boy / Blues-A-Rama
Perhaps the most ambitious album in the career of this multi-award winning guitarist. "Guitar Groove-A-Rama" jumps out of the gate with the funky leadoff track, "Do The Memphis Grind",
(with a tip of the hat to guitar greats James Burton and Steve Cropper) and never lets up. Along the way, Duke explores the grooves of Delta blues (Lil' Son Jackson's "Gambler's Blues"),
jazz/gospel ("Sunday Mornin'"), Chicago blues (Sonny Boy Williamson's "One Way Out"), the soul of Ray Charles ("I'll Do Anything But Work"), the country blues of Bob Dylan ("Down Along
The Cove") and even Irish folk ("Danny Boy"). In an album filled with highlights, the best may be the 16- minute tour-de-force "Blues-A-Rama," wherein Duke pays tribute to 10 guitar
influences with an amazing performance recorded live in the studio. "When I came up with the idea of 'Guitar Groove-A-Rama', I wanted to make an album of tunes that showcased all the
sounds and influences that make up my style, or styles," says Robillard in the CD liner notes. "Of course, the blues is at the root of nearly everything here, but I also wanted to show some of my
horns to the band and try and reproduce the authentic sound of the early Rhythm and Blues of the mid to late 1940s and 50s. Musicians and singers like Louis Jordan, T-Bone Walker, Big Joe
Turner, Roy Milton and Charles Brown were at the forefront of a new music that fused the blues with the rhythm and horn sound of the swing era with the infectious beat of boogie woogie. It is
this decade, 1945 to 1955 that made such an impression on me as a young man and inspired me to form the horn driven version of Roomful of Blues in the early 1970s. A group that is still
touring and recording today after 40 some years! I have been fortunate to have a wealth of great players over the years in my bands and on my recordings. Some Duke Robillard Band alumni
and some Roomful alumni also. So this CD is really a reunion of sorts between players and tunes." DUKE ROBILLARD
Duke Robillard's passport has been renewed once again, stamped, and now re-validated, listing his profession as "songwriter" in addition to his previous occupations as guitarist, singer and
producer. His new CD, Passport to the Blues, features a dozen songs, all but one written by Robillard - the single exception, "Make It Rain", was written by Tom Waits and his wife, Kathleen
Brennan. It's his first album of original self-penned songs since 2003's Exalted Lover. Following the success of Grammy-nominated Stomp! The Blues Tonight Robillard has delivered a tough
collection of songs that's a stone return to Duke's grittiest roots - dirty, house-rockin', shack-shakin', finger-bustin', down-in-the-bottom git-tar blues.
At the turn of the new millenium emerged a blues mighty prophet who made up for the genre's dwindling spirituality: Mo Rodgers. Thanks to a revolutionary album entitled Blues Is My Wailin'
Wall, Mo recounted the whole history of the blues, from the slave trade of yesteryears to the current bluesploitation days. A second outing (Red, White and Blues) was soon in the works to cash
in on this success, and it became an instant hit with the blues crowd. So, here is now « Redneck Blues », the third part of the Mighty Mo Rodgers Blues Anthology ! Rather than a fatalistic,
somber vision of the world, Mo provides us with an optimistic perception of what could easily be if we all accepted to see things as they are, instead of trying to blindfold ourselves in a sterile
attitude of denial. Along with their poetic intuitiveness, this sense of hope is probably the blues' most enduring legacy. A sense of hope and perspective that makes Maurice Rodgers one of
CD DFG 8672 RODGERS, MIGHTY MO Dispatches From The Moon
BLUES
The father of nu bluez confirms his standing as a genius and a precursor with this new release, the fourth chapter of an unprecedented odyssey through the poetic meanderings of the blue note.
Mo has taken refuge on the moon this time; in his own iconoclastic way, he's sending us musical dispatches dealing with the often sad, sometimes happy, state of our world. The blues equivalent
of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, no less!
For the past three decades, the blues progressively lost their true symbolical meaning. As the white Gods of showbusiness promptly hi-jacked the blues, the black cry inherent in them gave way
to screaming guitars, and festival stages pushed rural juke joints and ghetto taverns into the background. Or so we thought.
At the turn of the new millenium emerged a mighty prophet who made up for the genre's dwindling spirituality : Mo Rodgers. Strangely enough, this improbable Savior didn't surface in
Chicago, Holy Land of the blues, but in Los Angeles, modern Babylon torn between Hollywood's insolent affluence and South Central's Third World poverty.
Thanks to a revolutionary album entitled Blues Is My Wailin' Wall, Mo recounted the whole history of the blues, from the slave trade of yesteryears to the current bluesploitation days.
peak, burning the stage with an urgency that makes you think the spirit of Janis is watching over her. The first time I heard the voice of Janis Joplin, I was 11 years old and it was 1970 in Mobile,
Alabama. I scrambled to the radio to raise the volume while my mother yelled at me to turn that crazy stuff off. I listened to the radio, not my mother. "Bobby McGee" buzzed through me like
an electric shock. There was this girl who had a strange raspy voice like me! On the radio! At first I thought her name was Pearl, but later I discovered that this was the title of her L.P. and that
the singer, Janis Joplin, had died of an overdose of heroine. For years I've wanted to create a tribute performance to this ghost of a girl who so influenced my preadolescence. I wanted to show
another side of Janis than that of the whiskey bottle and the rebel attitude. She was educated, intelligent and avant-garde. Of early blues women, she had the knowledge of an anthropologist. She
Everyone concerned with the blues today is aware of the tremendous work done in the past two decades by the MUSIC MAKER RELIEF FOUNDATION, helping the true pioneers and
forgotten heroes of Southern blues music gain recognition and meet their day to day needs.
This new volume in Dixiefrog's MMRF Series, entitled "Slavery, Prison, Women, God and. Whiskey", presents eleven artists from the Foundation. Most of these bluesmen are complete
unknowns in Europe, including Rufus McKenzie whose "Slavery Time Blues" introduces this album with an incredibly moving denunciation of enslavement, reminding us that slavery days are
not that far away in time. In their songs, the artists tackle such universal issues as servitude, prison, love, sex, God, and whiskey. All things that help poor people around the world escape the
humdrum drabness of everyday life, sung with simple words and pure intentions. Listening to this album is an experience in humor, faith and melancholy that will leave no one unscathed.
Nico was born on august 1973 in Toulon, France and started playing harmonica since the age of 18. He ran into the blues when he was 15, through Muddy Waters'record "Hard again" featuring
Rezension aus Bluesnews (April/Mai 2006): In verschiedenen Reviews und Artikeln wurde die von Tim und Denise Duffy gegründete Musiker Maker Relief Foundation in bluesnews bereits
vorgestellt.
Frank Edwards - My
As unusual as it may sound, Washington was actually born from his own love for the blues. More specifically for the rough and direct style of the likes of Son House, Charley Patton or Skip
James. But Washington never attempted to cover their repertoire, and he never dared to call himself a bluesman : "The blues and I, it's a private affair. Like any love story, you have to
understand that your loved one does not belong to you. The music I play is inspired from my own life, and that's where the link iwth the blues is at, nowhere else. Tommy Johnson's or Bukka
White's feelings belong to them, only to them. It'd simply be disrespectful of mine to try to imitate them. Moreover, those musicians we portray today as the ancestors or the godfathers were
real pioneers, they were young bucks badly in need of a revolution, of kicking in the old stable with a modern sound. That means a lot to me"
Born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Washington launches his career at age 8, on a cardboard guitar under the limelight of his bedroom. He then grabs his first real instrument around age
"people are impressed to see a black woman play like a man." Tim Duffy / Music Maker When she's talking about her days as a teenage guitarist for the legendary Piano Red, Beverly Guitar
Watkins says "Back then I didn't do nothing but looked pretty and played rhythm." Beverly met Piano Red, and they formed the Meter Tones around 1958. They played a lot of colleges. They
played University of Georgia and Yale. They played Mississippi in segregation days and they slept in a station wagon because they couldn't get a motel room. When Red's group broke up in
about 1966 Beverly didn't consider quitting music. She next joined up with original Ink Spot Eddie Tigner. Then there was a succession of bands. Sometimes she played in clubs, sometimes
CD DFG 8634 WELCH, MONSTER MIKE Just Like It Is
BLUES
One of Boston's best-loved guitarists, Monster Mike Welch has been a fixture on the international blues scene for over fifteen years. As leader of the Monster Mike Welch Band, Mike released
five acclaimed CDs of mostly original material (These Blues are Mine, Axe to Grind, Catch Me, Adding Insight To Injury, and Cryin' Hey!), and toured North America and Europe. As
guitarist in Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, he was a major part of a new CD release (Sugar Ray and the Bluetones Featuring Monster Mike Welch) in March 2003 on Severn Records. Mike started
playing guitar at the age of eight, he dedicated himself to the blues by the age of eleven, and quickly progressed from a regular at local blues jams to a respected member of Boston's
professional blues community. By the time he was fourteen, Mike had played with blues greats like Junior Wells, James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin, and Johnny Copeland, as well as stars like the
Blues Brothers Band with Dan Aykroyd, who gave Mike his nickname, "Monster Mike." Now, Monster Mike Welch presents "Just Like It Is", a very bluesy and "T. Bone Walker"oriented album
with jazz influences, including 11 Mike's songs out of 13, and certainely one of his finest to date. "Just Like It Is" was recorded the same way than the previous Mike's opus ("Cryin' Hey! ") with
musicians Mike is very comfortable with (drums : Mark Teixeira - bass : Brad Hallen - keyboards : Anthony Geraci) and very quickly, in two days, like a live in studio without any overdubs.
