The Exeter Diocesan Board of Finance Limited is
a company limited by guarantee No 186001
registered in England Charity No 249798.
IN November 2008 our son Paul,
then 19, died from a brain tumour.
Paul’s smile, sense of fun and
concern for others touched all who
knew him. He demonstrated a quiet
courage and determination to get on
with his life, sustained by his faith in a
loving God.
During and after his illness, as a
family, we found great benefit
from times away and having set
up a charitable trust in Paul’s name
we decided to establish our own
accommodation where we could
offer a break to young adults (aged
approx 18 – 30), their family and
friends, facing similar circumstances.
We bought The Old Bakery and run
it commercially as a B&B, but those
meeting the Paul’s Fund criteria can
have their accommodation costs met.
We call it Paul’s Place. More than just
accommodation, Paul’s Place aims to
be somewhere special that will be a
source of strength, hope and positive
memories.
We can accommodate six to eight
people and have a guest dining
room, lounge and kitchen giving a
flexible self-catering option. As well
as regular and Paul’s Place guests, we
News
welcome small church groups and our
minister at St George’s church is able
and willing to provide spiritual and
pastoral input if requested.
The grief of losing Paul does not go
away, but in setting
up Paul’s Place we
have found a new
purpose and
direction in our
lives and for that
we thank God.
YOU might
recall that in
2005 Devon’s
churches promoted a
Lent course entitled
‘What on Earth are we
doing’, and subtitled
‘A Lenten Challenge to
Lifestyle’. You may have
even been someone
who participated in this
initiative.
Six years on, this question
is perhaps even more
relevant. We are facing
such key challenges in
our human relationship
with God’s earth. With a
growing population and
increasing demands, we
are consuming natural
resources more quickly
than they are replaced.
Fresh water, minerals,
oil and gas, are finite.
Extinction is facing a
growing number of plant
and animal species. We
continue to contaminate
the air, seas and land with
impurity. Then there is
global warming…
How we live here
affects how others die
somewhere else. The
message of ecology, as
with St Paul’s metaphor
of the body, is that we are
all inter-connected. We
all belong to one another
and have responsibility
for each other. This we
call love, peace and
justice in action.
What have you or your
church done to improve
your environmental
behaviour and ecological
footprint in this time?
Are you wasting less and
recycling more? Have
you reduced your travel
or water demands? Do
you support Fairtrade and
local producers? Are you
using greener energy?
Devon Churches Green
Action has recently
developed a map of
our ‘green churches’.
These include ecocongregations,
Fairtrade
registered communities,
composting toilet
facilities and renewable
energy projects.
We invite you this Lent
to reflect on these and
other actions and get in
touch. It may lead to a
series of articles? Email:
Lent
IT’S Sunday morning and Purity
Muthoni is preparing tea at Mathia
Anglican Church, Ndima, Kenya. She’s
a leading figure in her local Mothers’
Union and parish and will serve tea
from a thermos after the service.
Tea is important in Purity’s life. With her
husband, William Mathenge, she has
6,000 tea bushes which they pluck with
help from their son and casual workers.
Fairtrade pioneer Traidcraft has helped
them develop their skills and improve
the quality of their produce.
‘Fairtrade is very, very important to
me,’ says Purity. ‘We get good money at
the end of the year. We used to grow
quantity, but we grow best quality now.
Before we were given little, sometimes six
shillings per kilo which was not enough.
We were stressed. Now we are well-fed.
We have a good diet and get money from
the tea to educate our children.’
For thirty years Traidcraft has been
helping people in poor communities
trade their way out of poverty. An
important part of their work has been
to help producers reduce impact on
their environment. But today Traidcraft
helps them adjust to the changing
weather patterns brought on by
climate change. They help farmers
diversify crops and identify other
sources of income to survive times of
unpredictable climate.
Ninety per cent of the carbon emissions from our daily cuppa come
from boiling the kettle. But climate change is making life harder for
the farmers who grow our tea and coffee, says Sally Farrant.
Fairtrade Lent
Buy refreshments for your
church? This Lent choose tea,
coffee and sugar with the Fairtrade Mark.
Buy a smaller pack if it’s more expensive.
Haven’t tried Fairtrade? This Lent use
only Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar and
discover which brand suits your tastes.
Most supermarkets stock a range.
A regular Fairtrade consumer? Your
challenge could be to move from
supermarkets to buying from Traidcraft.
Your money will go further since they
support producer groups too small for
supermarkets. Find a local person who
sells Traidcraft on their website
www.traidcraft.org.
Already serve Fairtrade refreshments at
church? Take the next step and agree
together to become a Fairtrade Church.
Visit www.exeter.anglican.org/yourchurch
or ring Joanie Harris on 01392 294940
and ask for a Fairtrade Church Pack.
Fairtrade Fortnight is 27 Feb – 11 March
2012. Order a ‘Big Brew’ pack from
Traidcraft on 0845 330 8900 and invite
your wider community to join you.
In Malawi tea farmers can no longer
rely on the rains in November, and one
tea estate has lost half the trees due
to drought. Wildfred Kasitomu, a tea
farmer for over 30 years, says: ‘We are
harvesting between 3,000 and 4,000
kilos of green leaf a year. But 10 years
ago you could get between 7,000 and
8,000 kilos of leaf over the same time.
Our income has gone down. Farmers
can no longer afford to send their
children to school.’
In northwest Tanzania the January rains
failed and did not trigger the white flowers
which bring the fruit. No fruit, no coffee
bean. For the 18,000 coffee-growing
smallholders who belong to the Karagwe
District Cooperative Union Limited this
means hunger for their families.
In Devon every Sunday more than
26,000 cups of tea or coffee are drunk.
Add all the coffee mornings and ‘mums
and toddlers’, and a simple everyday
action becomes a movement. This Lent,
let’s buy Fairtrade and show our care for
those who overcome climate change to
bring us our daily cuppa.
change is affecting Fairtrade farmers see
Giving
changes
lives
I am very grateful to everyone for all the time, talents, prayer and fi nancial
support which you give for the work of the Church in this Diocese – work
centred on the sharing of God’s good news with the people of Devon.
The Diocese of Exeter is not an offi ce next to the Cathedral but people,
parishes and mission communities throughout the county.
Most giving, whatever its nature, supports the ministry of the local
Church. But we are all part of a much wider family which extends across
Devon and beyond. We share together in spreading God’s good news,
not going it alone, but supporting one another in prayer, time, talents and
the fi nancial resources of the Common Fund. When we gather together
on Sunday we are a local expression of the wider and deeper life of the
Church which goes on for 168 hours a week, 52 weeks a year.
Your giving changes lives as people encounter Jesus through word and
action: in schools and activities for children and young people; supporting
hard-pressed communities and people on the margins of society; nurturing
new vocations; maintaining and adapting beautiful church buildings;
providing inspiring worship; pastoral care in all life’s highs and lows.
God gives us everything – our lives, our friends and families, the creation
around us and most directly through the salvation found in Jesus Christ.
So, thank you for all that you do and for all that you give to God’s mission.
I encourage us all to continue in God’s service and, if possible, to deepen
our response to His overwhelming generosity and thereby ensure that we have
the resources, both financial and otherwise, to do God’s work in His world.
Rt Revd Michael Langrish
Bishop of Exeter

Giving
changes
lives
Your hard work and
financial giving are
transforming lives
of people across
Devon: in cities,
towns and remote
villages. Together
we are sharing the
good news of God’s
love for all.
Reaching new heights
Re-ordering of the Victorian church
of Holy Trinity, Barnstaple offered
the opportunity for the church to do
something dramatically different and
create a climbing wall in the tower.
The diocese has supported the project
through advice and funding and the
tower is used for outreach. Pioneer
minister Andy Dodwell said:
“It’s given people in the church the opportunity to combine their
love of sport with serving God by reaching out to people in the
wider community.”
Listening to God
A project to develop young leaders in youth
and children’s ministry is running in the
Culm Valley Mission Community. One of
the aims in the first year was to encourage
young people to listen to God through
exploring creation and outdoor education.
Pioneer youth minister for the deanery,
Selina Garner, said: “I’ve been amazed by
God’s incredible provision for the Create Youth and Children’s Ministry
project in its first year. Hearing a young person share an insight or
understanding of God is always such an enormous privilege and joy.”
A brighter future
All Saints Church of England Academy in Plymouth
opened its doors last autumn and will shortly begin a
major £12 million rebuild to provide new facilities for its
1190 pupils. It offers youngsters a distinctively Christian
ethos and an endowment fund has been established to
provide extra opportunities for students.
Principal Pete Grainger says: “We have had a fantastic first
year as a new Church of England School for Plymouth
and are delighted that the new build will provide 21st
century facilities that enables us to offer inspirational
learning and opportunities for our young people.”
Growth in ordinations
The Bishop of Exeter ordained 20
new deacons this year, the highest
number in around 50 years. Bishop
Michael said the deacons were
the ‘first fruits’ of the diocese’s
commitment to growth:
“We are also starting to see the
beginning of a new pattern of
ministry develop, as more and
more people commit to supporting
themselves in their ordained ministry.”
Meals for all
The vision of the vicar of
Cockington, Tony Macey,
has turned a large modern
church into a parish centre
providing hot meals, a sports hall and worship
space. Now 30 - 70 people, many of whom live alone,
come every day for a three course home cooked meal by a
trained chef for just £4.50.
Tony said: “We want to serve our community as Christ
served and this centre is open to everyone. Spending
time in the restaurant and talking to people is like a
daily confessional.”
A grant has ensured that a set of diocesan Lent course resources is being offered
free of charge to every Mission Community. Everybody Welcome is the name of
the tried and tested five-week course. The Ven Bob Jackson, former Archdeacon
Explaining the
Common Fund
The Diocese of Exeter, drawing on
similar work recently undertaken
in Bristol Diocese, is producing
a short DVD for parishes and mission
communities explaining how money is
spent on different areas of work across
Devon, and how this work is funded
from the diocesan budget, of which
Common Fund is a large part.
The DVD sets out our work in the
context of our vision to grow the
church in Devon. All parishes will
be sent a copy of the DVD in early
February, along with resources
suggesting how the short film might
be used, in services and other parish
meetings. The DVD and resources will
also be available on our website,
Devon Inspiration
‘Fairtrade is good to us. Without it, we cannot build anything,’
William Mathenge and Purity Muthoni in Ndima, Kenya.
May the cup that warms me on a cold day bring safety
from the elements to the picker.
May the cup that keeps me going when I’m hard at
work, also sustain the life of the grower.
May the cup that soothes my woes remind me of the
plight of the poor.
May the cup that cheers me as I rest,
bring fair reward to the tea worker.
May the cup of tea grown so far from my home,
bind me to the hand that plucked leaves from the bush.
May the God who loves all his creation bless us both
as we strive for fairness in his world. Amen.
Fairtrade Fortnight is 27 Feb – 11 March 2012
