Presidents Message
Beautiful…Motivating…Generous…Thankful…These are all adjectives that described my
thoughts and feelings following the annual OCES-FCS Ambassadors Meeting this Fall. The
committee members who were in charge of the beautiful decorations for the meeting really
outdid themselves by showing our “Oklahoma” Spirit in our Centennial Year! Hearing the reports
of those project winners this past year and the plans from the new award winners really
motivated us to be creative in reaching and teaching the citizens of Oklahoma. The OCES-FCS
Ambassador organization is the recipient of a generous donation from the Dorothy Blackwell
estate. At present, we are researching the best way to utilize the funds to benefit the Extension
system, therefore improving the quality of lives of more Oklahomans. Lastly, I am truly
thankful for the Ambassadors members and their support and encouragement. I am eagerly
anticipating my second year as your president. Please feel free to contact me or other board
members with ideas, suggestions, or general comments. I’m looking forward to seeing and
working with you in 2008!

Fellowship Awards
MEXICO: ITS PEOPLE, CULTURE, AND IMMIGRATION
PRESSURES-- Recia Garcia/NW District reported on
her educational study seminar offered by Michigan State
University Extension which provided her with 7 days of
focused study to experience Mexico from the inside-out,
increased her understanding about sources of pressure
for Mexican immigration to the U.S., economic challenges
for families left behind, and social health and nutritional
issues of youth involved.

District CNEP Area Coordinators, Sue
Hamilton/Pontotoc Unit, Laverda Johnson/
Choctaw Unit and Debbie Walters/Pittsburg
Unit traveled to New Mexico to study and
observe Native American EFNEP youth and
adult programs.

County Grants

Denney, Delaware County explained that
Master Gardeners, Native American elders,
4-H leaders, OHCE members, senior and
special needs citizens, and Extension staff
worked together with youth to construct a
container teaching garden in front of the
Delaware County OSU Extension Center.

Dunlop reported for Cathy James, Logan
County about her program that helped
children differentiate wholesome from unwholesome
foods with the help of “Healthy
Choice Puppets.”
Multi-County Grants
Cha n g e f o r t h e Be t t e r--Lesa Newman-
Osage County, Charlotte Richert-Tulsa
County, Trinity Brown-Pawnee County,
Dea Rash-Payne County, and Stephanie
McSparrin- Noble County as well as Floyd
Long from the Oklahoma Department of
Corrections told members about their program
which contained components derived
from Character Pillars (4-H), Pathways
to Success (OCES), and DollarDecisions
(Idaho CES).
Sp o r t s Nu t r i t i on f o r Te e n s --LaDonna Dunlop,
Oklahoma County and Donna Stangl-
Jung, Canadian County reported on their
program which provided basic knowledge
and skills in nutrition, hydration and physical
fitness conditioning to young athletes
and their coaches in Oklahoma and
Canadian Counties.

Mo n e y o n t h e Bo o k s h e l f-- Sandy Lackey,
Carter County and Susan Routh, Grady
County described their multi-faceted program
which began in their respective counties
and was also offered to educators in
five other counties to serve Headstart staff
and parents with programs and resources
on financial literacy, family communications,
problem solving and cooperation.
State Specialist Grant
A Pa r e n t in g Jo u r n e y – Deborah Richardson,
OSU Assistant Extension State Specialist
reported on her endeavor to provide
A Parenting Journey program materials to
the Family Resiliency Impact Team in order
for them to present supplying positive parenting
education in local communities.
