has been engineering 

and manufacturing 

industrial automation devices and 

components for over twenty years. Our 

operations are organised into two 

areas: electronic equipment for 

machine automation (“Systems”) and 

electronic and control devices 

(“Products”). Our drives are 

engineered, manufactured and 

supplied using proprietary 

technologies. We also operate as a 

system integrators using off-the-shelf 

products (Siemens, ABB, Ansaldo, 

Eurotherm drives, Control Techniques, 

etc.). Our “Product” division

systems: in many cases, the power of 

existing converters and electromechanical

Quartesolo (Vicenza, Italy) is a major 

Italian company in the electronic 

automation industry. During the past 

twenty years, we have designed many 

applications for the papermaking 

industry and have acquired a 

prestigious position on the 

marketplace for affirmatively tackling 

the challenges of the new millennium. 

INTRODUCTION 

The current outlook of the European 

economy, and more specifically the 

perspectives of the papermaking 

market, certainly do not encourage 

paper mill owners to purchase new 

machines or replace old electronic and 

control apparatuses. The negative 

feeling which has been in the air for 

several years is now becoming 

particularly oppressive: the problem 

is felt by manufacturers across 

Europe and most of the world (only 

China appears unaffected). The strive 

to cut costs at the paper mill and to 

choose reliable control electronics has 

strongly contributed to the affirmation 

of SEAL on the papermaking 

automation market. Nowadays, the 

bids presented by various 

competitors are carefully compared 

and analysed from a technical point 

of view. This factor was once somewhat 

neglected because in most cases only 

international suppliers used to have 

the necessary practical experience. 

This change of trend was grasped as 

an opportunity by SAEL to stand out 

among other electronic automation 

and control device suppliers. SAEL has 

always chosen a different customer 

approach seeking active involvement 

during the engineering of 

apparatuses and by organising 

technical training courses to bridge 

larger knowledge gaps. Each 

technical manager at the paper mills 

for which SAEL has supplied even only 

one drive is invited to take part in the 

SAEL training programmes which take 

place three or four times every year. 

These meetings and the constant 

exchange of information with paper 

mill engineers are exploited to create 

our electric panels revamping 

systems - which is our area of 

expertise. The “Reborn” system was 

originally devised to respond to the 

specific needs of a customer of ours 

to solve problems related to the 

unreliability of some electronic boards 

and was later implemented in many 

installations at the paper mill. Our 

customers s can save e 50% price 

by re-engineering an old 

control: on other words, we can 

guarantee reliable, state-of-the-

cost. A further interesting feature of 

the “Reborn” system is the possibility 

of continuing to use the old spare part 

stock existing at the paper mill 

because only an emergency rack is 

required. The “Reborn” systems can 

control all drives, regardless of their 

size and the current supplied by the 

SCR bridge.

REVOLUTIONARY SYSTEM FOR 

INEXPENSIVELY REBUILDING OLD 

DRIVES BOARDS THAT IS UNRIVALLED 

IN ITS FLEXIBILITY. AFTER SIMPLE 

TRANSFORMATION WITH THIS SYSTEM, 

THE ELECTRICAL BOARD IS “REVIVED” 

BECOMING JUST LIKE ITS LATEST 

GENERATION HI-TECH COUNTERPART 

The aging of the existing sectional 

controls on which we perform 

maintenance operations at our 

customer’s plants spurred us to seek 

a solution capable of rebuilding old 

drives and ensuring the reliability of 

modern controls. With the objective 

of ensuring top running reliability in 


the revamping of old DC controls, we 

have designed a control rack suitable 

for replacing all existing drives (we 

have implemented solutions for BMBâ, 

SIEMENSâ, ABBâ and SCEâ drives). The 

old control board is replaced by our 

intelligent drive: this solution means 

that the spare part stock existing at 

the paper mill can still be used (SCR 

bridge, relay, contactor, reactance and 

fuses). All previously used relays, 

boards and functional automatisms 

are removed from the old panels, 

leaving only the line relay and two 

serial cables in place. This rack is then 

directly interfaced with the SCRs of 

each bridge (thus transforming the 

drive from analogue to semi-digital or 

digital) and with the SAEL system 

using a double field bus. Some old 

systems are not equipped with PLC 

and the system needs to be rapidly 

wired on-site at the paper mill itself. 

The “Reborn” system was created to 

respond to this challenge. It was 

applied for the first time at the Marchi 

group paper mills in 2000. The system 

maintains the features of our nextgeneration 

drives applied to Intelligent 

Drive inverters and DC drives - simple, 

reliable devices specifically studied for 

the papermaking industry. To our 

credit we have many applications 

combining Siemens S7 PLCs to 

establish direct interfacing by means 

of a Can Bus/Profibus Bridge board. 

Without additional costs, our inverters 

and DC drives can communicate with 

off-the-shelf PLCs exchanging words 

for reading or writing and facilitating 

the wiring which must be made at the 

plant. Our projects during the past 

years have been nearly only directed 

towards solutions aimed at upgrading 

electric systems instead of than 

replacing them. The trend to revamp 

old electric apparatuses and reuse old 

panels to the greatest possible extent 

appears virtually univocal. SAEL has 

always been greatly involved in this 

type of activity and we have a high 

number of major implementations in 

this area. Some projects were 

developed on existing hardware 

platforms with the addition of 

functions and controls. The distances 

between paper mills, production 

plants and service centres - which 

once penalised electronic 

manufacturers by heavily effecting onsite 

intervention and assistance times 

- are no longer a problem for SAEL. 

We have devised methods for 

supplying immediate, safe assistance 

at the paper mill. Over the years we 

have demonstrated the worthiness of 

our developments and proven our 

reliability in supplying guaranteed 

precision and dynamic solutions.

SAEL has designed and implemented 

an innovative web-based assistance 

for allowing customers to perform 

activities which previously only an onsite 

technician could perform. The 

distance between the installations and 

our service centre is today cancelled 

out because each installation can be 

controlled and managed directly from 

our control room. The “Internet World 

SAEL Assistance” system - or IWSA - 

is implemented without special 

hardware connections and without the 

costly, limiting remote servicing 

systems offered by other 

manufacturers using a modem and 

direct telephone line. Today, our 

service technicians can control our 

electronic boards, edit firmware, set 

drive parameters and edit the PLC 

program in real time directly from our 

control room or from other location. 


To access the IWSA service, our 

customers simply access the Internet 

and log onto our web site at 

www.sael.it by clicking on the “Internet 

World Assistance SAEL” link, selecting 

the confirmation key and entering 

their password and user ID. That is 

all. The log-in operation needs to be 

repeated after logging out. Our 

technicians can control the station 

from their own computer, setting up 

a two-way communication with the 

technician on-site, using either chat 

or voice functions for suggesting the 

changes to be made to the connected 

system. This is possible without 

installing new software on the 

supervising computer at the plant. If 

the plant technician does not have the 

software needed to program the PLC 

or drives, we can install the software 

and manage these operations directly 

from our control room using the 

remote PC simply as serial interface 

with the SAEL hardware. The webbased 

architecture of the system 

allows to establish a constant 

connection if the customer requires. 

In this case, we can manage 

assistance operations either from our 

control room or on-site at any time. 

Obviously, in this case, a series of 

passwords and a specific security 

system will be implemented to prevent 

illegal access. This solution is very 

useful for testing 

remote systems and 

for remote control 

functions; if the 

connection is 

established through 

the machine supervisor 

station, all faults can be 

displayed, alarm 

reports can be 

consulted and all 

residing functions can 

be monitored. 

The system was 

applied and tested in 

all bigger Italian paper 

mills groups. This 

application achieved 

amazing results during 

commissioning and 

after start-up. During 

three days and only two 

scheduled stops, all the 

drives were rebuilt and 

the entire control was digitised. As a 

whole, the project involved 20 DC 

motors with an installed power equal 

to 3 MW. The project was organised 

on three daily shifts, one for wiring 

and two for electric testing. 

Approximately eight people were 

employed for wiring and three for 

starting up the motors after both 

stops. The system was then 

monitored directly from our control 

room in Vicenza by means of the 

brand-new “IWSA” Internet World SAEL 

Assistance system. The IWSA system 

was exploited to monitor the machine 

supervisor by means of extremely 

rapid refreshes and to program the 

drives, the PLC and make all the other 

necessary software adjustments. No 

technicians spent more than three 

days at the customer’s plant: all other 

functional interventions were 


performed from our control room. 

During second step of the project in 

the “wet zone” of the machine, the 

presence of the SW specialist was not 

even required on-site. He continued 

working with his colleagues directly 

from his office without needing to go 

onto the floor for the adjustments 

which are normally needed during 

start-up. 

SHEETERS AND WINDERS 

We have revamped many Jagemberg 

and Bielomatic sheeters and 

rewinders - and more. We have 

partially modernised and partially 

rebuilt many controls over the past 

years: Sdw, Klineweffer controls and 

those of other smaller international 

and Italian manufacturers. 

Approximately 15 electronically 

synchronised controls for sheeters 

leave our plant every year. Our 

solution 

consists in

sheeters. We specialise in establishing 

technical exchanges with the paper mill for 

seeking the right solution and providing the 

best price/quality ratio. Each project - before 

and after engineering - is shared with the 

paper mill technicians and controlled either 

remotely, if required, using the IWSA system 

or directly by the technicians responsible 

for start-up.
