Survival Guide for Young Women
Learning How to Navigate Today’s World with Grace and
Strength and a Few Laughs Along the Way
Los Angeles, CA: We all have those moments in our life when we look
back and think, “I wish I knew then what I know now…” We often realize in
hindsight that so many crucial and life-shaping decisions are made in our
twenties and thirties, and we imagine how much smoother our life may
have been if we had someone offering us wisdom and input as we
navigated those decades!
Holly Wagner, a cancer survivor and co-pastor of the multi-cultural
Oasis Church in Los Angeles, met Nicole Reyes when Nicole was a
19 year-old who moved to Los Angeles with the dream of becoming an
actress but whose heart was hurt and broken from childhood wounds as an
adult child of an alcoholic. Over a ten-year period, these two unique
women began to share their life experiences and Holly soon realized she had the responsibility
to encourage, guide and mentor the younger Nicole.
Together, Holly and her 20-something friend Nicole have penned the Survival Guide for
Young Women (Regal Books), an essential guide for women who long to discover spiritual
and personal fulfillment in their lives, and gather a little wisdom along the way!
“We are all in this together and need one another’s wisdom and experiences. We wanted to do
whatever it took to truly inspire and equip young women to navigate well the seasons of life
that lie ahead,” says Wagner and Reyes. “According to the Bible (Titus 2), older women have
an amazing opportunity to support, encourage and offer guidance to younger women as they
lay the foundation of their lives through the twenty-something years.”
Filled with relatable illustrations and practical tips, Survival Guide for Young Women will
challenge young women to make the most of every minute of their 20s and beyond. With easy
application, the authors provide understanding, empathy and humor on life topics with
chapters that include:
How to Navigate Friendships (Doing Life Together): Step out of your comfort
zone, toxic friendships, friendship boosters and social media etiquette.
Notable Quotes
from Survival Guide for Young Women
As long as there is someone younger than you on the planet, you are an older woman, and as
an older woman, we have a responsibility to equip, motivate, inspire and train younger
women. As the older woman, we should be opening our hearts and our worlds to a younger
woman…encouraging her, accepting her and offering her wisdom we have gained. (pg 7)
When in younger woman mode…we are in the position of receiving. This means we need to
“shutteth uppeth.” We are looking for the wisdom, the insight and the help, so we need to be
quiet and listen. (pg 8)
You were gifted and called by God to run in the lane that He set before you…we often spend
irreplaceable time desiring what another woman has. It is because we misunderstand our
own value that we find ourselves coveting someone else’s. (pg. 12)
Jealousy is a wasted emotion…and we all face it and have to deal with it in our own hearts.
Jealousy and unhealthy competition hinder relationships and feed insecurity. Judgment is
another wasted emotion. Because our world conditions us to think a certain way about
beauty and style, we make judgments against others without considering the context of their
lives. (pg 25)
When we make the commitment to honor God with our finances, we open our hearts to be
transformed by the Holy Spirit! We begin to see where fear or doubt or insecurity or greed
has been holding us back from the abundant and blessed life to which God has called us!
(pg. 61)
One of the best things about being part of our local church is the diversity of friendships it
has brought us. We both have friends of all ages, backgrounds, shapes, and sizes… and our
lives are better for it! Each friend adds a new, vibrant hue that colors our life experience!
Our word gets brighter and larger every time we step out of our comfort zones and invest in
friendships with people who are different than we are! (It’s also a great preview of what
Heaven will look like!) (pg. 113)
The key to experiencing God’s best in your dating life is to make a commitment to honor God
when it comes to the choices you make…whom you date, how you develop a relationship,
and ultimately whom you marry. (pg. 91)
We shine brightest when we love and show value to others. We become a light that causes
the people in our world to pause and take notice; whether or not they know God, they are
drawn to the illumination of our lives. It is then that we get the opportunity to share with
others what Jesus has done in our lives. When we shine, things change- or more accurately,
people change. (pg 165)
