Message from the Superintendent Career and Technical Education is becoming a leader in ensuring flexible and relevant learning experiences that keep students engaged in their classes while providing a realworld, career-oriented curriculum. Our mission in Bellevue is “to provide all students with an exemplary college preparatory education so they can succeed in college, career, and life.” This mission is clearly reflected in the work of our CTE teachers who work cooperatively with district level staff to provide learning experiences that will engage students in their classes, help them to acquire skills and knowledge relevant to future careers, and enhance academic achievement so they will be prepared for entry into a four-year college, community college or technical college. Students in Career and Technical Education in Bellevue are being prepared also for another option upon high school completion – immediate entry into the workforce. These skills are no longer simply “nice to have,” but actually a requirement for success. Our students in Bellevue are active members of Career and Technical Students Organizations such as DECA, FCCLA, and SkillsUSA. These organizations provide skills and knowledge relevant to future careers and have a proven positive effect on academic engagement and achievement. CTE provides opportunities for students to delve deeper into classes and programs that reflect their interests. There are sixty-eight CTE classes offered in the Bellevue School District including WaNIC (Washington Network of Innovative Careers) courses offered through Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Career and Technical Education programs have an enormous yet often overlooked impact on students, school districts, and the nation. Most now however, understand and appreciate that CTE has created a connection between the “real world” and the concepts they learn in school. They also realize that society needs people with different skills sets to function effectively. Parents, as well, recognize that Career and Technical Education is paramount to achieving educational and career goals, and that CTE is an integral part of the “whole school experience.” All of us are excited about the continued development of CTE programs in the Bellevue School District as well as its impact on preparing students for success in a global economy. We look forward to creating even more opportunities for measurable growth and achievement in academics and overall career-readiness experiences. J. Career and Technical Education Advisory Groups Career and Technical Education advisory committees advise, assist and provide support and advocacy for quality CTE programs. Advisory committee volunteers have the opportunity to learn more about the CTE program and the instructors are able to increase their understanding of the job market, employers’ needs and community opportunities. CTE Advisory Committees: • Provide information to update, modify, expand, and improve the quality of programs. • Support and strengthen their partnerships between business, labor, community, and education. • Make recommendations that will strengthen and expand the CTE curriculum and provide assistance in implementing these recommendations. • Identify and validate academic and occupational competencies, determining priorities, and review and evaluate programs. • Communicate long-term goals and objectives of the CTE programs to students, parents, employers, and the community. There are two kinds of advisory groups – the General Advisory Council and the Program-specific Advisory. The General Advisory Council provides direction and guidance to administrators and teachers for the entire Career and Technical Education programs offered by a district. This type of advisory group is usually formed at the secondary level to serve skills centers and high schools. A program specific advisory committee focuses on providing direction for a specific CTE program within a high school or skills center. Various school districts often combine program advisory committees that serve the same occupational area. It is critical in meeting the needs of students in academic achievement, career exploration, career preparation, and leadership development and as a result represents as much as a third of their high school experience. Through Career and Technical Education in our district, students explore career opportunities and learn how core school subjects like math, science, reading, and writing are used in real-life by engineers, green technology experts, health care providers, construction workers, and many other professionals. In the Bellevue School District we understand the unique ability of CTE to prepare young people for current jobs as well as careers of the future. With this understanding we have established well-designed CTE programs that focus on making students more postsecondary education and career-ready. Our programs are rigorous, relevant, project-based, and effective. They are about both career and college with programs of study that are standards-based and meet all requirements of both federal and state law. Our technical programs are designed around industry-standards and certification, where appropriate. CTE students gain leadership skills through participation in organizations like DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America – BHS, NHS, IHS); SkillsUSA (Health Services – SHS; Automotive Service Technology – BHS; and Graphics Communication – SHS); and FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America at BHS, SHS, NHS). These CTSO’s (Career and Technical Student Organizations) are recognized as integral to the career and technical education program. They provide a unique program of career and leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for middleschool/junior high and secondary students enrolled in career and technical programs. CTSO’s are not “clubs” to which only a few career and technical students belong. Rather, a CTSO is a powerful instructional tool that works best when integrated into the career and technical curriculum and classroom by an instructor who is committed to the development of the total person. CTE helps prepare students to succeed in high demand occupations within the 21 st century’s competitive global economy by promoting quality instructional partnerships with business, industry and the academic community. We are grateful for the relationships we have established with Microsoft TEALS, ACE, Bellevue College, WaNIC, and the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County. Through these partnerships we can prepare students for post-secondary education and employment in a competitive global economy. In Bellevue we continue to support the delivery of achievement, not just in academics, but in overall careerreadiness. To meet this goal we must continue to design appropriate curriculum and create learning environments based on everyday, real-world, project based experiences that appropriately prepare all students for success in both careers and college.
